The Cry
So there I was in Los Angels tracking down Angel so I could finally seek some sort of revenge. Of course I did not want him dead, I'm not that much of a monster. I just needed to sort some thing’s out. Mainly smack him in the mouth and that was about it. I didn’t want to upset Connor, his son, either.
Yes, you read correctly. There was a son involved. Angel accidentally got his sire Darla pregnant on a one night stand and the rest is history, literally. You see, Darla never got to see Connor. She had staked her self so that Connor could be born because technically vampire’s can not have children. Then again if that was the case then I wouldn’t be writing this would I.
You see, when Connor was only four weeks old a man by the name of Holtz stole the baby and hid away in a demon dimension. Holtz had a grudge against Angel, you can’t blame him really, the vampire did kill his whole family and turned his youngest, my mother, into a vampire. The man had turned him self to stone so that in the future he could better equip him self to kill Angel.
Holtz, though, knew nothing of me, nor did he know that the vampire he seeked revenge against no longer existed. Instead Angelus was know Angel, the vampire champion with a soul.
When my Grandfather, and I use that term very lightly, returned from the demon world back to ours he was a very old and tired looking man. And Connor, if I can say so. Was a very handsome looking seventeen year old with chocolate brown hair just long enough to tie up. His cold green eye’s didn’t have the spark that they once did. Now they where cold and grey like his step father’s heart.
Now for the odd bit. They had only been gone three weeks but in that time Holtz had brain washed Connor into believing that Angel had murdered his whole family and had banished them to the other dimension.
Angel became cut of from the world, both natural and unnatural. His only son had been take from him and to be quite honest, if he was any other man, I truly believed that he would have committed suicide.
I came to Los Angeles at the time to deal with the death of Buffy Summers before she was resurrected. Ever one deals with death in their own way and the others bottled it all up in side. It was driving me nuts knowing that everyone was trying to avoid the subject of her so I packed my stuff and left. I'm not even sure any of them noticed, then again they never did.
I found out that my Grandfather was alive from a man named Wesley who worked for Angel and he was also and ex slayer watcher. I was a little taken back but Wesley filled me in on everything but he promised me he would tell no one else where that I was in the city and he kept his word.
Finding Holtz was not easy because the old man knew a fair bit of magic by this time and this including a shrouding spell. It stopped any one finding his ware bouts when using magic. I wasn’t using magic though, just my senses.
Holtz, along with Connor, had checked into a dingy little motel not far from the Angel investigations building. I was a little apprehensive at first about knocking on the white washed door but I knew what had to be done.
The door was answered by a tired looking old man who’s dark brown eyes told of tales of woe. His hair was mass of white wire and his voice rasped when he spoke.
“Yes?” the man spoke harshly and annoyed and I knew my presence was not wanted.
“Oh, hello sir. You don’t know me but, this might sound a bit odd, but im your Granddaughter. My names Pheonix, sir.” I was polite and my nervousness was part acted part true which I was not counting on.
“You must have the wrong door. I only have a son and he’s only a few years older than you.” Holtz went to close the door but I put my hand in the way.
“Please, let me speak.” I looked up at the man who want much taller than me, and that is saying something. He sighed a tired sight and slowly re opened the door. The man looked around the courtyard of the motel and then nodded his head to tell me to come in.
I stepped into a small room with a trodden carpet and two worn out looking beds in the corner, both made shabbily to look a little more presentable. Their was no sign of Connor but the teenage clothes slung onto one bed made me sure I had the right man.
Shakily, Holtz made his way over to one of the beds and rested himself was a sigh. He looked me straight into the eyes and one of his white eyebrows raised them selves.
“So tell me Pheonix, how is it that you think I am your Grandfather.” The man asked e and I fiddled with the side of my jeans.
“You had a family once, didn’t you? You had a wife and four beautiful daughters. Your youngest was very special though-“
“Who told you this.” Holtz cut across me and raised him self up slightly.
“Please let m finish?” I asked and the old man slowly nodded his head.
“Your youngest, Drussila. She was very special.” Holtz’s eyes widened at the sound of my mothers name.
“she saw things in her head before it happened. She had visions of terrible things that only you and her mother knew about. This attracted a man. I say man in the slightest of terms. Well, he took an interest in your daughter. An interest that tore your whole family apart. That vampire killed you wife and your other daughters but left Drussila. Instead he did a terrible thing to her. Turned her insane then made her one of the demons. Am I right?” I asked pausing while also watching Holtz open mouth.
“Tell me how you know this-“
“Because he told me. Angelus told me when I was very small. Told what he did to my mother and how he enjoyed every second of it. Ive never forgiven him for that but that man does not exist any more and you know that.” I started to walk around the room slowly but I still kept my eyes on Holtz.
“I love my mother and my father very much, I think it’s the human in me but I don’t think there is human in you.” My face changed into a face anger and Holtz raised him self.
“What are you.” He demanded but in a suttle whisper.
“Me? I haven’t got a bloody clue but I know what you are. You’re an evil monster who stole a tiny baby and probably made his life hell. Your supposed to be able to forgive your family and I can and I have. You sir, are not my family and so I’ll feel no guilt in what I have to do.” I finished my speaking and made my way over to the now scared man.
I’ll put it simply. I killed the man. I took out my small knife and stabbed the unarmed one twice in the neck.
Enough about the past. Let’s concentrate on the future and on the Wolfram and Hart lawyer firm building. It was hue and was situated right in the middle of a well sophisticated part of the city. It also had more security than I first anticipated because I could feel the eyes of the two huge security guards on me.
My safest bet was to go from the top floor down to the bottom via the ladders on the back of the building. Climbing them was the easy part. The hardest was doing it with a back pack and a skateboard attached to my back. My Vans trainers were slipping of my feat as I accelerated up the ladders faster than a normal person would.
Being a vampire meant that my senses were enhanced so I could smell the air getting cleaner as I got higher. Also, once I was up on top I could see clearly how far I was actually up and it was a long way.
The ground beneath me was black gravel which crunched under my feat as I made my way over to a lonesome door in the middle of the roof. It was locked of course and so I had to break my way in with a safety pin that was holding a badge up on my bag. It took me a few tries to fiddle with the metal but finally the door clicked and slowly swung open to reveal a small flight of metal stairs.
Cautiously I made my way down and ended up on a bright white corridor with a chrome elevator situated right at the end.
There might have been security down at the bottom but up here was a silence as space it self which I thought was weird. With that in mind I made my way slowly and quietly to the elevator and pushed a small button that would let me inside.
I was glad to hear silence inside the elevator because I hated the music hat they played. It always sounded like some ones mobile phone was ringing.
The elevator stopped and opened and I braced my self just incase there was some one about.
The décor was dramatically different on the corridor that I was on. The floor was brushed a sot oak and the walls where a peachy color to match. I though it looked rather pansy for a lawyer firm but then again it was filled with lawyers.
Instead of another elevator I took the wooden stairs just incase there where camera’s around because I had no intension of being picked up by them. I had visited the law firm once before along time ago so I new that the main office was located on the third floor.
After ten minutes of walking and jumping down stairs I found a rather large sign which also made finding the office pretty easy. It was pretty far up on a pair of clear and golden trim doors. I hate being short so I had to stretch to my full height to read the bloody thing.
3rd floor:
· Reception
· Main office
· Conference room
· Photocopying
· Decapitation

The main office was where I needed to be, so ignoring the last bit I opened the door as quietly as I could as not to draw attention to my self. This would have been a very hard thing to do seen as when I looked around there was no one apart from the back of a blonde girl. She had her back towards me filling away at her nails and listening to the music coming through the bright pink headphones.
The office was just opposite her desk so I ducked to the floor and on my hands and knees like a child I crawled across the hall. I was quick and reached the door slipping inside moments as the receptionist turned around.
The door snapped quietly behind and I rose my self of the floor to be faced with a huge office. The floors where oak and the walls matched with a dark red on the walls. There was a burgundy sofa placed in the middle of the dark flooring and behind that was a huge bay window with the dark blinds pulled down.
More oak furniture could be found at the end of the room in the form of a giant desk and behind it lay a velvet covered wall that caught my eyes.
The wall had an assortment of weapons from long and elegant swards to small battle axes with elfish languages. The shined softly in the dim light and made me smile unconsciously. Taking my eyes away from them I moved forward to the desk in front. I threw down my bag and sat down in the chair and spun around fast making my self slightly dizzy. To stop my self vomiting I stopped the chair and slowly spun myself around to what looked like an elevator inside the room which I though was a little peculiar. Then again, it was a demonic law firm.
Turning my attention back towards the weapons I noticed a small silver dagger with a small fiery bird etched upon the blade. Its eyes where dotted with two little ruby’s which I swore shimmed softly with a fire like glint. It was beautiful and some how it attracted me. I reached my hand out to touch the dagger but a familiar voice entered the room.
“Look, I don’t care if he did save that woman from that burning building. He only did it to sacrifice her didn’t he? I don’t care…” The voice abruptly stopped half way through it’s conversation in a shocked sort of manner.
“Pheonix?” Asked the voice and I turned on my heals to look straight into those familiar brown eye’s. I almost did not recognize Angel in his black suit with the matching black leather shoes accompanied by a mobile phone.
Having realised he had stopped half way through his conversation, Angel retreated back to it but still kept his eyes upon me.
“Gunn, I'm going to have to get back to you.” The vampire with a soul spoke into the phone with confusion and then flicked the phone shut and turned his attention towards me.
“Pheonix, where have you been. Willow called me and said that you went missing, just took of without telling anyone.” Angel spoke with slight anger in his voice which was only just detectable as he slowly made his way words me.
“Gesh, what has this place done to you. I didn’t even get a hello.” I said smiling innocently twirling my hair with my fingers.
“Well what are you ding here? You should be with Buffy in Europe.” Angel questioned and I pulled a face.
“And when the hell did you decide where I go. Also I don’t like traveling, I'm more of a stay put kind of person.” I said with a shrug slightly swirling on the chair.
“Don’t do well traveling but you found the energy to come here and annoy me and not o mention worrying every one.” The vampire was definitely angry now and I nodded my head.
“Yer, the whole idea of coming here sounded a lot better in my head but maybe that’s because I had something pretty cool planned.” I sighed a long sigh as Angel stared at me with confusion.
“So Angel, do you have any idea what happens to a vampire when he stands sin the sun?” I asked seriously raising my self slightly with my hands flat on the desk. I glared at Angel and hatred filled my eyes.
“Do you have any idea what happens when some one is a complete cowards and listens to their Ex-girlfriend. Well do you?” I was angry now and everything that I had said about not hurting Angel was pushed out of my mind. I wanted his blood.
“Pheonix, just calm down and tell me what you’re on about.” Angel was wary of me now and was slowly stepping away from me.
“He was such and idiot, had to prove himself once again and now, because of you, I’ve lost him.” I shouted in anger and propelled my self across the desk in a frenzied fury. My fists where clenched as I charged at Angel who wasn’t ready for the high kick to his chest that sent him across the room landing on his back.
Angel was not winded easily but this time was different. I went over to the vampire who struggled on the floor and I crouched down to him with my fist ready. I was about to throw a punch right to his face when it suddenly changed. From beneath his face came his demonic features and where his once placid eyes where laid yellow danger. The vampire snarled and took hold of my fist and threw me to the ground and I landed on my back staring at the ceiling.
Instead of trying to resume the fight I sat up with my back towards Angel and my knees up to my chin. I threw my head into my hands and started to sob quietly to my self. Hot tears ran down the face of an immortal who hadn’t cried once in her one hundred and eighteen years of existing.
It had finally sunk in. He was never coming back and as hard as it was to admit, I knew that it was not Angels fault. It was in fact nobody’s fault and it took along time for that to sink in.
I heard Angel crouch down in front of me but I did not want to show him my teary face. Angel lifted up my chin and I looked into the soft brown eyes as one of my tears fell onto his hand.
“I'm sorry.” He apologized but I could not understand why.
“Why?” I asked.
“Because I never thought of you.”
I was confused at this remark and there was something in his voice that I did not recognize. I am still not quite sure what it was but something inside of me told me that it was sorrow.
“I want him back Angel.” I sighed and wiped away the tears from my face quickly as if they where something filthy.
“Angel, is every thing ok, I heard shouting.” Came a females voice which startled me slightly.
“We’re fine Fred.” Angel answered but still kept his gaze upon me but I looked away as if I was some sort of shame. I had never cried and so Angel was the first person to see me and I think it gave him great concern for me. He was still staring at me as I wiped my face again wit my black hoody.
“That amulet that you gave to Buffy, she gave it to Spike. He wore it down in the school and…and… I don’t want to talk about it.” I kept my eyes to the floor because I was trying hard not to well up again with tears.
“He took the whole of Sunnydale with him, didn’t he?” Angel asked and I nodded slowly. I wanted to get up, to run away again because I could still picture my fathers burning face in my mind and it haunted me.
