“So Buff, when are we going to make our move?”
They were outside the old factory now. Xander stood beside Buffy as she pressed her ear against the door.
“Soon,” she replied. “Xander listen to me, all I want you to do is make sure Oz and the others get out ok after they’ve changed back. No Heroics!”
“But heroics is my middle name!” exclaimed Xander. Buffy gave him a disapproving look. “I know,” he continued, “no heroics.” Xander knew that his past heroics hadn’t exactly gone his way.
“Good, you ready?” she asked.
“As I’ll ever be.”
“On the count of three we move. 1…” she put her hand against the door ready, “2…3!” She pushed the door violently with her hand and it swung open. Xander and Buffy ran in.
****************************************8
Both of them made there way down into the centre space of the factory. It seemed deserted, which surprised them both a little. No vampires, no woman, no-one, just the cages of werewolves.
“I don’t understand,” said Buffy, looking up at the cages. “Giles and Willow should have finished that spell by now.”
“Must be running behind,” replied Xander. “They…” He was cut short by movement from behind him. Both of them span round and found themselves faced with several cloaked vampires.
“Well, don’t they just look a friendly bunch,” whispered Xander sarcastically to Buffy.
“You ready to back me up?” she asked, looking at the numbers.
“Oh, yeah!” he replied, trying to sound confident. He actually felt like screaming and running away at the time, but then again he felt like screaming and running away everytime his great uncle Norman came down for Christmas and he’d survived several Christmases. Maybe there was hope for him yet.
“Good,” she said. She turned to face the vampires who had already started to advance on them. “I just love it when there’s a welcome party.” With that she ran towards them.
Buffy ducked a punch from the first vampire and plunged a stake easily into his still heart. Another vampire struck her from behind as she did so. Turning around, she caught the vampire in the legs causing him to fall on top of another one. She grabbed a large plank of wood and staked both of them.
More vampires closed in on Buffy. There were certainly a lot of them. One tripped her up causing her to land face down on the hard concrete floor. Lifting her head she realised she was surrounded. There were too many of them. She turned round to see how Xander was doing and watched as a vampire struck him hard in the back of the head. He fell to the ground unconscious.
“Xander!” she cried out, but her screams were cut short as a vampire grabbed her tightly around the throat. She had to think fast. She was choking.
Buffy looked up at the ceiling of the factory and saw a blacked out glass panel. It was the only thing that stood between the vampires and the sunlight. There was hope yet.
Using all the strength she had left, she managed to push the vampire off her throat and off her body. She stood up and grabbed the wooden plank she had staked the vampires with earlier. Then, without a moment’s hesitation she threw it hard towards the ceiling, smashing the glass panel.
“Enter mister sunshine!” she said happily as the large number of vampires around her smoked, then turned to dust.
She rushed over to Xander and bent over him. His head was bleeding. “Xander! Xander! Can you hear me!”
Xander stirred and groaned. “Ow.” He opened his eyes and let Buffy help him to his feet.
“You ok?” she asked, trying to get him to stand upright.
“I live,” he replied. He felt like a bomb had gone off in his head. He noticed the sudden lack of vampires in the room. “So where did the guys with the sharp teeth go?”
Buffy pointed to the hole in the roof.
“Oh…. What happens now then?” he asked. He was finding it hard to keep his balance.
“Well, I suppose we wait here. Giles and Willow can’t be far off completing the spell now.”
Suddenly footsteps could be heard behind them. They turned round to find the woman Willow had spoken of earlier.
The woman smiled with her wrinkled lips. “If only it were that simple.”
Buffy stood in front of the wobbly Xander protectively. He looked as if he might pass out. “It’s over!” she shouted. “Don’t you under stand! You lost! We’ve killed your vampire pals and soon you’ll loose your strange choice of pet too” she added pointing the cages.
The woman laughed. It was the most haunting laugh Buffy had ever heard, or felt. It gave her an uneasy feeling. The woman then backed away into the shadows.
“Wait!” yelled Buffy. “Where are you going?…You’ve got nothing…” Buffy stopped. A giant click sound came from the cages. What was she going to do?
“What’s going on?” asked Xander weakly. He was leaning on Buffy for support.
Buffy said nothing but watched in horror as the cages that contained the werewolves opened. The woman was going to let the werewolves finish them off.
Buffy looked towards the steps. There was still time to get out if she ran. But then she looked at the condition of Xander and realised that it wasn’t possible. She’d never make the jump over the large hole in the steps carrying him and he was too weak to make it himself.
The werewolves were coming out of the cages now. Grabbing the barely conscious Xander she backed away, only to find her self against a solid wall.
The werewolves were surrounding them now, eyeing up their dinner. They were trapped. There was no way out. This was it.
