“It’s happening again.” I wrote in my leather-bound diary. “The dreams.” I’ve been having them for some time now. Pretty much started when the other things did. I yawned, still tired, waking up at, hold on-- checking clock-- twelve past three. In the morning. I closed the diary after writing about the dream some more. “A man with a black suit and black hair. A woman with him. Thin, like him. Both sweating like they were in a sauna. The woman was royal looking, almost like a queen. There was something familiar but odd about these two people. But I think they are my birth parents. Their eyes were bright red just like mine.” I tucked my diary and the key to it under my bed and fell back into a deep sleep.

I woke up to my brother crying in the next room. It was-- checking clock for the second time tonight (correction: this morning) -- fourteen after four. I stumbled out of bed and walked into his room, flicking on the light as I walked. Sure enough he was kicking his feet and wailing on the top of his lungs. I carefully lifted him out of the crib and rocked him in my arms, trying to shush him. He quieted down a bit and I started slowly walking back to my room with him. I laid down in my bed and placed him against my chest in an effort to put the both of us to sleep. I woke up for a third time, must have been about half an hour later, and I put him back into his crib. I climbed back into bed and fell asleep for the rest of the nigh--morning.
Six’ o’clock came around quick. I woke up fast, squinting my eyes as the sun beamed in at me. I rolled myself out of bed and to my closet. I picked out jeans, a pink and white striped sweater, and white flip-flops. I walked downstairs to the kitchen.
“Morning pumpkin.” Mom beamed, awake, well-rested, and cheery as usual.
“Pull up a chair and eat something.” Dad intervened.
“Sure. Okay.” I said, happily taking the offer to eat as a family. I glanced over to my dad, who was juggling Ethan and trying to drink his hot coffee at the same time. I could just see the worst happening right now. To prevent it…
“Uh Dad,” I tried to get his attention. “You want me to take him while you drink that?”
“Oh--no, no. You sit and eat. You’re only a kid once, Addie. Only once.”
“Dad. I’m fifteen. I’m a big girl.” I said in a mature womanly voice. He looked over to me and smiled as dads do in that ‘I know, but…’ look. I didn’t take no for an answer. I sighed, reaching over and taking Ethan out of his arms. He didn’t so much as glance back over to me, but continue to drink his coffee.
“So, Addie, how’s school going? Anything fun happening today?” Mom asked.
“Uh, not really. You know, I was going to go to the Magic Box after school. That little place near Dad’s--”
“Magic Box?” Mom asked quizzically.
“You really shouldn’t be getting such things in your head at such a young age, Addie. It cant be healthy.” Dad said, intervening again.
“No--uh you see I wasn’t going for anything in particular. Our biology class is doing this thing on--uh mandrake root and I need some for the class. I’ll be in and out. I promise.” I said, smiling widely at him. He gave me a smile back.
“I guess that’s fine. Just don’t mingle too much. Okay?” He asked, patting my back as he left the table.
“Uh--” I muttered as I looked down at the baby still in my arms. “I think if I brought him to school I’d get kicked out.”
“Oh I’ll take him sweetie.” Mom said in that loving, ‘everything will be fine’ voice. She took him and I immediately got up and gave her a quick peck on the cheek and Ethan one too and left for the bus. I was walking across the street, a few blocks from my house, when I heard a loud honk and turned to see a car almost running into my side. Instinctively, I put my hands up as defense and it happened. A thick blue shield type thing surrounded me and the car stopped when it hit it. The driver looked at me, shocked. It was a man. Dark hair, kind of scruffy looking, but still handsome. He got out of his car just as the shield disappeared and he stopped in front of me.
“Whoa--what was that all about?” He asked.
“I-I don’t--what do you mean? I didn’t see anything.” I tried to play it cool. Wasn’t working well.
“I saw you. What are you?” He asked.
“A girl. What are you?” I asked, sly.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it in a rude-- I’m Xander Harris. Are you okay?” He asked, concerned.
“Yeah, yeah. I’m fine. Just a bit shocked. It could do stuff before but not like that.”
“So…you’re a witch?” He asked.
“A witch? Are *you* okay?” I asked him, wondering why he was talking about such a thing.
“I think you should come with me somewhere.”
“No way. That may have worked on girls in the sixties pal but I have taken safety classes. No way, uh-uh.”
The man chuckled at the comment I made. “You ever been to the Magic Box?”
“No. I heard things about that place though…why?”
“My girlfriend and my friend own it. Come on, come meet them. We can help you out.” He insisted.
“I can’t” I yelled at him.
“I’m not going to hurt you. I’m harmless.” He smiled.
“Not that. School? As in high school, still in it.” I explained.
“Right. Forgot.”
“I was going to come by after school. Is that okay?” I asked sheepishly.
“Sure thing. Your welcome anytime. Just tell the owner that your waiting for Xander Harris. That’s if I’m not already there.”
He smiled a sweet, innocent smile, got into his small purple car and drove off just as my bus came into view. I got on and processed everything. “Wow.”
