Xander had been following the Chevy for several miles. He recognized it from the café. When it parked on the dirt road Xander motioned for everyone to stay. Spike, as usual ignored him and together they climbed out of the car. As the walked to the rear of the vehicle, the driver side door opened.

Spike and Xander froze as a man began to clamber out of the Chevy. He faced them, with his right hand slightly hidden behind his back. Suddenly, in a flash, he raised his arm, pointing at the guys. Xander saw the glint of metal, and then he heard three loud pops. Diving to the ground he narrowly managed to avoid being shot.

Spike, on the other hand, cried out in pain as a bullet ripped through the flesh of his shoulder. It wouldn’t kill him certainly, but it sure hurt like hell. He dropped to his knees, clutching his wounded arm.

The man didn’t fire again. He just stood there, anxiously glancing into the pitch blackness behind him.

Xander heard the driver’s door open above his head and Willow’s voice floated down to him.

“What the hell is going on?” she demanded. The only responses that Xander could think of were sarcastic and totally inappropriate. He decided to remain silent.

Spike crawled up behind Xander, blood seeping through his fingers. Xander had a sudden frightening flashback.

Spike’s hand holding Buffy’s neck. The blood running through the gaps between his white fingers in tiny rivers. The red stain spreading from his hand down his arm. Spike’s eyes filled with unusual tears. Someone had been screaming out her name and sobbing loudly.

Xander didn’t stop to remember who because he heard another, much more terrifying noise. A low growl cut across the gravel road. Peering out into the blackness, Xander spied a none to pretty sight. Two little yellow eyes glaring back at him.

“Get in the car Spike,” he hissed to the vampire directly behind him.

“What’s your damn rush you git?” Spike retorted, “I’m have a bloody good time out here, what with being all shot up and all.”

“Spike, get in the car,” Xander said between gritted teeth and he slowly began to climb to his feet. “If you value your limbs and organs where they are get in the car.”

Spike looked out to where Xander was. It took him a moment, but he spotted the eyes. Like he’d felt a 200 volt jolt, Spike sprang to his feet. The eyes began to advance. Xander shoved Willow back into the passenger seat, and got in. Spike quickly followed in the back.

“What is it?” April asked in a small voice. Xander had almost forgotten she was there. “What about Celia? Are you guys alright?”

Just as Xander opened his mouth to reply something large and very heavy crashed into the side of the car. The force set him flying to the right, smashing Willow into the window. Unable to see his attacker in the dark, Xander flipped on the headlights. Out the windshield he caught a glance of something large and hairy before it skirted out of the beam of the lights.

The car was still parked in front of him, but the man had also pulled a disappearing act. In the confusion, Xander hadn’t seen where he went or if he’d taken the girl with him.

The only real option was to get back out of the car and investigate. Mustering as much courage as he could Xander turned around in his seat.

“Someone’s got to go look for the girl.”

“Why don’t you do it?” Spike asked angrily. Xander could see the little sparks of pain as he held his wound.

“I’ll go,” April said in her quiet voice. Before anyone could advise her against it, April was out of the car and approaching the back of the Chevy. Xander held his breath, he really didn’t want to lose another slayer so quickly.

April slowly advanced on the Chevy. The beam from Xander’s headlights cast a bright glow around her, but still she was cautious. Whatever had smashed into the car before was still lurking close by, not to mention the lunatic wielding the gun.

With reservations, April opened the back door to the car. Crumpled on the seat was Celia. Her hands and feet were bound and she had a handkerchief in her mouth. She appeared to be unconscious. Reaching out, April gently shook her friend.

She began to move slightly just as April heard the growl behind her. Hot breath scorched her back, making her stomach drop to her feet. The gravel crunched beneath its feet. Looking over her shoulder, April saw that it was still beyond the reach of the light. She could hardly make out its shape.

“Celia, please just get up,” she cried in her quietest voice. She was trembling fiercely with fear. Her petrified legs could barely move as she began to help Celia out of the car. Never taking her eyes off the creature, April led Celia to Xander’s car.

Willow had the door open and April shoved her friend inside. Xander screeched the tires on the rock as he rushed back onto the highway. April tried to breath a sigh of relief, but it caught in her throat every time she saw the outline of something terrible staring at her from the darkness.
