Ethan drove the old Chevy into the dark wilderness. It was nearly two o’clock in the morning. In four hours the sun would rise and it would be forced to retreat. The Chevy bumped along the worn out highway. In the backseat the girl was still screaming through her gag.
Unable to stand the noise any longer, Ethan pulled the car over. Reaching under his seat, he retrieved a revolver. He flipped on the overhead lamp and turned so he could see the girl.
“I will shoot you if you don’t shut up,” he threatened. The girl struggled and shrieked defiantly. Furious, Ethan shoved the gun into her face.
“Dammit, shut up or I will blow your bloody brains out! Do you understand?” She nodded and was quiet.
Ethan turned the key in the ignition, pulling the car back onto the paved road. His anger quickly drained away as he spotted his turnoff. It was replaced by fear when he saw headlights approaching from behind him.
Ethan turned onto the gravel road, trying to ignore the desperate panic rising in his chest. When he hit the gravel he flipped off his lights hoping to deter his pursuer. In the backseat, the girl sat up and tried to look out the back window.
“Sit your damn ass down on that seat before I bloody shoot you!” shouted Ethan. Twisting around in his seat, he smacked the side of her head with the butt of his pistol. She cried out and collapsed onto the vinyl.
Ethan had come to the end of the gravel road with the headlights still trailing behind him. The post was directly in front of the Chevy. Parking the car, Ethan debated his options. The other car pulled in behind him and killed the engine. In the dark, Ethan heard the doors open and close. Footsteps crunched toward the Chevy. Taking a deep breath, Ethan cocked his revolver and opened the door.
