April followed them back into the coffee shop where they all sat down at a table. Again they exchanged glances, each prompting the other to take the initiative to speak.
“What do you know about you friend Celia?” asked the redhead.
“Not much,” April began. Then she spilled her whole bit about just moving to Sunnydale and getting the job at the café. “What’s going on here? Is it a gang? Do you guys have gangs?”
“No,” replied the girl, “I doubt it was a gang. Bad things happen in Sunnydale, but it isn’t your average, run-of-the-mill crap. There’s….” She trailed off, searching for the right word.
“Evil,” finished Xander. “There’s stuff here that most people don’t even dream about. This isn’t exactly the white picket fence kind of town.”
“Are you saying that man… are you saying he was a vampire?” April asked with a shake in her voice. “Vampires aren’t real are they? I mean….” This time it was her that trialed off when she saw the look in the others eyes. “Damn.”
For a long time they all just sat staring at her, waiting for her to say something. Maybe they wanted her to break down or freak out. Maybe later, when no one was watching she would, but for now she just wanted things to settle back down into boring. Boring she could handle, it was this insane thing that was getting on her nerves.
“So supposing this guy isn’t a vampire. That’s what you said outside right? That you didn’t think he was a vampire?” Their silence was answer enough. “Ok, well then, what do we do?”
“Whoa, slow down love,” Spike exclaimed, “You aren’t doin’ anything. We don’t know what we’re up against and we ain’t lettin’ a little girl tag along just to get her knocks in.”
“I’m not a little girl,” April cried indignantly. With a sudden burst of anger, she slammed both her open palms on the table and stood up. “Dammit, I’m going to save her whether you like it or not!”
Spike rose to his feet and grabbed her arm. He twisted her body so that her back was pressed into his chest. He clutched both her arms at the wrists tightly.
“Listen up girly, this isn’t a game,” he hissed in her ear. “You could get hurt, maybe killed. Me and my mates aren’t going to let you put yourself in that kind of trouble, got it?”
Summoning up something inside her April wrenched herself free of his tight grasp. She threw a well aimed punch that landed square on his jaw. Spike stumbled backwards, bumping into a chair, sending it careening across the floor. When he raised his eyes to look at her, his face was different. His eyes were yellow and long white fangs were exposed from his lips.
Before she even had a chance to scream April felt her knees go weak. The last thing she saw before the darkness was the vampire’s face leering at her.
