Rain pattered the window of the beat-up Chevy. He leaned against the fender, taking a long drag on his cigarette. In the darkness, the desert stretched out before him into eternity. A hundred yards behind him was the road, but he didn’t worry. This far out in the California desert, there wouldn’t be anyone for miles.
Glancing into the back seat he saw her. She had been struggling before, trying to break free of the rope that was coiled around her body. Then as they had left the lights of Los Angeles behind she had made less noise. Now she was silent and still. Deathly still. He knew she wasn’t dead though. He could hear her heart pounding.
She was scared, near terrified. It had made her blood run icy through her veins and her breath catch in her throat. He could smell the salt from her tears. Opening the door, he stared at her. Still she made no movement, no attempt to run away. She only breathed slowly, with a slight tremor.
Reaching down, he clasped her arm and dragged her from the car. She was limp in his hands, making no effort to aid or impede him. He dragged her well clear of the gravel road on which the Chevy was parked. There was a wooden post in the ground and tied to it was chain, which stretched four feet from the post.
Taking the chain, he hooked it gently to the handcuffs she was bound with. Dropping her to the ground he backed away slowly. She sat up then and stared at him. Her blue eyes were watery and frightened.
Frantically she cast anxious glances all about her. He knew she wouldn’t see it. She wouldn’t hear it either, and it would take her. She wouldn’t know until it was too late.
With a heavy sigh he climbed back into the beat-up Chevy and drove back up the gravel road to the highway. He heard her begin to scream. The noise cut the stillness like a knife, but he didn’t worry. This far out in the California desert, there wouldn’t be anyone for miles.
Ok, so everyone says I'm good at this writing thing, so I thought I would give it a shot. But I'm not going to write something that no one is going to read, so give me a shout if you think I'm any good and I'll write some more.
Thanks a bunch
