“Do it again, I heard you,” Dawn whimpered. She hung up the phone and turned it back on. She dialed Xander’s apartment.

“Hello?” Came Spike’s voice.

“Spike?” Dawn whimpered.

“Dawn?” Spike asked. “Are you okay?”

“Spike I think something is in the house and I’m really scared,” she whimpered. “Buffy’s not answering her phone and I don’t know what to do.”

“I’m on my way over,” Spike said, hanging up.

Dawn hung up and sat curled up on the living room floor.

About 5 minutes later, Spike ran through the front door. “Dawn,” he said, going over to her.

Dawn looked at him as he sat next to her. “I think it was Mom,” she whispered.

Spike frowned and pushed her hair back. “Dawn, you said something was in the house. Do you know what it is?”

“I don’t know but it was keeping Mom from me. Spike, I’m scared,” Dawn whimpered, snuggling into his arms.

“I’ll stay with you, until Buffy gets home,” Spike said, wrapping his arms around her.

Dawn trembled and eventually fell asleep in his arms. Carefully he scooped her up and took her upstairs. He cleaned up the mayhem in the living room and waited for Buffy to come home.

About 2 hours later, Buffy came through the front door. “Spike?”

“Hey. Dawn called me. She said something was in the house keeping her Mum from her. I stayed with her and she fell asleep but I didn’t find anything,” he said.

“We gotta talk before you leave,” she said, sitting on the couch.

“Am I in trouble?” Spike asked.

“Does your chip still work?” Buffy asked.

“I think so,” Spike said. “I haven’t been in a position to find out. Why?”

“The vampire I killed tonight said you sired him. Two nights ago,” Buffy said.

“And you believed him,” Spike said.

“No but I had to make sure because I don’t want to kill you,” she said. “So please don’t lie to me.”

“I’m not. Buffy I haven’t kill anyone. I swear,” Spike said, with pleading in his voice.

Buffy looking in his eyes and saw the truth in them. “Okay. I believe you,” she said, softly.

Spike sighed in relief. “Buffy I’m not lying,” he said.

Buffy ducked her gaze. “Okay,” she whispered. “Spike, she said, looked up. “If you do begin killing again, I wont… I wont be able to kill you. I’ll make you leave and never come back.”

Spike frowned. “I think if anything like that happens, I’ll meet the sunrise. I know that it’ll be too hard for you to kill me and I wont put you in the position,” he said, as he stood up and sighed. “It’s late and you look tired.”

Buffy stood up. “Thanks for taking care of Dawn,” she said, softly.

“Always,” Spike whispered, and he left.

Buffy shook her head and went upstairs.
