Megan continued to pace backwards and forwards anxiously. the cell call had left her on edge. Brett looked at Her and The Wanderer .
“Okay we don’t know for sure that Pen has been taken.” He commented
“You didn’t hear the call,” Megan replied
“She’s been through these types of scrapes before and come out on top don’t see how this is different.”
“This time we’re dealing with a real evil.”
Brett and The Wanderer looked at each other.
“Real evil?” Brett asked, “What have we’ve been dealing with so far?”
“Rorgia is a Shoken Demon,” Megan continued, “He’s very powerful.”
Megan walked over to the table and picked up the printout of the symbol.
“There are only two times this symbol is used. When he is controlling someone or when he is someone. Shoken demons have minor shape shifting abilities they’re only able to take on the form of the person they extract the soul from.”
“What if he tries to get Penny?” Brett asked
“Then we’re gonna have to get a bigger team together ‘cause were not just going to be dealing with Rorgia power but Penny’s as well.”
A look of panic crossed Brett’s face. He looked at the other two seriously
“We have to find her now.”
“Hope went straight out to look for her,” The Wanderer replied, “lets just prey she makes it in time.”
~ Downtown, Phoenix Arizona – five minutes earlier ~
Nighthawk stood on the rooftop of one of the buildings. As she gazed down at the street she heard her cell ring. Pulling it out from under her jacket she answered it.
“Hello?”
“Nighthawk where are you?” Megan said in a panicked tone
“Still down town I should be back . . .”
“Get out of there now!”
Nighthawk looked curiously at the area.
“Why?” she asked
“There’s been an attack ordered on you.”
“By who?”
Just then three demons materialized out of thin air behind Nighthawk. She slinked up slowly trying not to raise any alarms.
Back at the mansion Megan paced anxiously backwards and forwards.
“I think the order is from a demon named Rorgia the corruptor he’s very powerful and I think he might be behind this whole chamber thing. I’ll explain everything when you get back.”
“Ok I’ll be there in . . .”
Nighthawk’s attention was shifted by the sound of hope chirping at her when she landed. Moving quickly she kicked out striking the first demon in the stomach then catching the second and third with a round house kick.
“Guessing this is the demon attack huh,” Nighthawk commented as Hope landed on her shoulder, “it’s kinda sad, there were only three of them.”
Just then she felt a low rumbling. She looked in either direction as two small army’s of demons charged at her from either side.
“Oh hell,” Nighthawk said as she drew her sword
Both armies leaped onto the roof where Nighthawk was standing. Nighthawk charged up and flipped over the first demon kicking him in the back of the head causing him to stumble forward and fall over the edge. Nighthawk spun around sharply elbowing another in the chest then hitting him in the head followed by a quick kick to the face. She lifted her sword in time to deflect an on coming attack which she countered with a spin kick to the stomach while guarding against another sword swing.
Hope watched from the sidelines. Getting her bearing she launched and flew off to get help. By now the fight was becoming more intense. Nighthawk swung her sword around sharply beheading one demon and, while keeping up the momentum, stabbing another through the chest. She was then hit from behind causing her to lose her balance. Another demon kicked her in the stomach followed by a punch across the jaw. Nighthawk fell down hard. The offensive maneuvers she was using were slowly becoming less effective so she decided a tactical retreat might be a better option.
Nighthawk swung over onto her back and kicked two demons off her. She grabbed her sword and flipped back onto her feet. The two demons in her path she kicked one in the face while stabbing the other. As they both fell she bolted for the edge of the roof. She leaped, sailed across the great divide, and landed safely on the rooftop of the building across the street. Wasting no time she unfolded her bow and loaded quickly. Nighthawk shot out her first two arrows knocking the first two demons out of the sky mid jump.
Before she could reload Nighthawk was grabbed roughly by the neck and thrown across the distance of the roof. Dazed she looked up to see Rorgia staring down at her. Calmly he walked up, his tunic blowing in the breeze. He knelt down and looked the champion straight in the eye.
“You must be Nighthawk I presume.” He said calmly
Nighthawk noticed the demon army was standing ready behind Rorgia. She sat up defensively and waited for the next move to be made.
“Who are you?” Nighthawk asked
“Rorgia the corruptor,” the crimson demon replied, “Head of the chamber. You’ve been quite the busy little bee haven’t you? I put a lot of time and thought into acquiring those business and I will not tolerate these constant disruptions.”
Nighthawk looked at Rorgia curiously
“You organized those attacks,” she commented
“Glad to see you caught up, personally, I thought slayers were quicker then that.”
“Why?”
Rorgia smiled at her.
“You don’t expect me to give away all my secrets now do you?” he said
Rorgia grabbed Nighthawk by the throat and dragged her onto her feet. He tilted his head playfully and looked her up and down.
“Now you know who I am I think it’s only fair to ask who you really are.”
Nighthawk remained silent. Rorgia smiled at her.
“That mask is only going to protect you for so long,” he continued, “one way or another I will find out who you are.”
Nighthawk continued to say nothing. Rorgia’s patience was wearing thin.
“Fine, so be it, the autopsy on your mangled corpse should be sufficient.”
Rorgia readied himself for his first attack, just then a fire ball shot past his head. He turned to see Megan and The Wanderer Standing on the next roof along heavily armed. Nighthawk smiled then punched Rorgia across the jaw. He stumbled back Nighthawk kicked him in the face. The other let lose with crossbow bolts striking the demon hoard. The army howled and spread itself out. Nighthawk went on the attack knocking down two demons and killing a third. Turning the sword around her stabbed a demon coming up behind her then quickly lashed out in front beheading the one in front.
The others were doing well in their fights. The Wanderer hit one of the demons with the butt of the cross bow then shot a second. He slammed the crossbow into the head of a third then quickly reloaded and shot a forth. Megan shot out a couple more fire balls knocking two of the demons off the edge of the roof. Another demon tried to strike her from behind bus she quickly erected a barrier which deflected the attack. This, unfortunately, was not a wise move. Since her magic didn’t match the level of a witch’s it used most of her inner strength to create it leaving her feeling drained.
Nighthawk looked over just in time to see Megan get grabbed by two of the demons.
“Megan!” she yelled
Nighthawk tried to rush to her aid but was knocked down by Rorgia. She watched in horror as the demons broke one of Megan’s arms. Rorgia knelt down next to Nighthawk.
“This is only the start of things to come,” Rorgia said,” If you continue to interfere I will hunt down all of your friends and kill them one by one slowly and painfully.”
Nighthawk sat in shock. How could she have let this happen? This was an amateur mistake and she was smarter then than. Nighthawk sat and repeatedly reminded herself that she had to look out for her team and make sure they were safe like Shona . . .
And that’s something snapped inside her. Seeing Megan being attacked by that demon brought back the image of Shona being stabbed by that sword. All of a sudden this deep burning anger began to surface from deep inside her an anger she had tried to suppress for two years. A look of pure fury crossed Nighthawk face as she flipped back up onto her feet. She swung out with her sword beheading three of the demons nearby. From the ground she kicked one of the swords up into her hand. Nighthawk faced the demon hoard and sneered.
That’s when she moves. Her strikes were lightning quick and struck with deadly accuracy. Demon after demon fell until only Nighthawk remained. She turned to Rorgia, breathing heavily and covered in demon blood.
“You wanna start something in my town!” Nighthawk sneered, “You’re gonna have to go through me! And if you try to use one of my friends against me again there won’t be enough of you left for identification do you understand!”
Rorgia looked at the angry slayer with interest.
“It appears I might have misjudged you slightly,” he said, “Very well I’ll leave this for another day, besides; I have an empire to forge. You will hear from me again.”
With that Rorgia disappeared. The Wanderer rushed over to Megan to check on her.
“Looks like a clean break,” he said, “I’m worried about some of these lacerations Nighthawk we need to get her to a hospital.”
The rooftop remained oddly silent. The Wanderer looked over to Nighthawk. She hadn’t budged an inch since Rorgia disappeared.
“Nighthawk!” he said more insistently
Still no response. Nighthawk stood seething in anger but not really knowing why. The Wanderer stood up and walked over and put his hand on Nighthawk shoulder.
“Penny,” he said softly, “This fight is over.”
Nighthawk snapped out of her trance and looked at The Wanderer.
“What?” she asked
“Megan’s hurt we need to get her to a doctor.”
Nighthawk looked over to Megan who was leaning against the ledge. A tear began to roll down Nighthawk mask.
~Phoenix general hospital, Phoenix Arizona – two hours later ~
“You’re alright?” Brett asked as he sat next to Megan’s bed, “You’re not going to die?”
Megan smirked.
“No I’m fine.”
Brett sighed.
“I suppose I should take your stuff of eBay then.”
“Hey!” Megan snapped and hit Brett playfully
The Wanderer walked in. he walked up next to the other two.
“Just talked to the doctor he said he’s like to keep you overnight for observation but you should be released by the morning.” he explained
Megan nodded slowly
“Great,” she replied, “Never was a big fan of hospitals.”
She looked up to The Wanderer.
“How’s Penny?” she continued
Megan noted the touch of sadness in the old mans expression when she asked.
“That’s . . . a different story.” The Wanderer replied
“I’ve never seen that look in her eyes before. It’s like she saw me go through a meat mincer.”
“Penny has a few things she still needs to deal with.”
Penny stood outside the hospital and just stared at the stars. The anger inside was slowly becoming more and more unbearable. She ran the fight over and over again in her head to see if there was anyway she could have save Megan. Just then the front door opened. Brett stepped out looking around the area. He saw Penny leaning against the wall and smiled softly to himself.
“There you are,” he said happily, “been looking for you everywhere.”
Penny grunted at him.
“Heard you got into a bit of a scuffle on the rooftops came to see how you were.”
“Fine” Penny replied sharply
Brett sighed and looked at Penny. She was still in the purple dress from when he took her out. With her hair down she looked even more amazing to him. Brett moved in closer to her.
“You know,” he said sweetly, “we never did finish our date. I know this is not the most romantic place but maybe we could finish it here.”
Brett walked over and placed his hands on Penny’s waist as he leaned in slowly. Penny looked at him annoyed
“What are you doing?” she asked
Brett stopped and looked at the slayer confused.
“I was planning on kissing you.” he replied
“Could you not?” Penny snapped back forcing Brett’s hands off her
She pushed Brett out and started to walk off. Brett thought about leaving the issue but couldn’t he have to know. Sharply he turned to Penny.
“What just happened here?”
“We’ve got a lot of work to do Brett we don’t have time to play around.”
Brett folded his arms and glared at her.
“So . . . that’s all this to you huh? Playing around?”
Penny matched Brett glare for glare
“What did you think it was?” she asked
“I don’t know,” Brett explained, “I had this insane feeling that you might have like me.”
“Brett The Chamber is planning something big. I need everybody focused on finding what that is!”
“So the whole thing at the club meant nothing to you?”
“Just get to work!” Penny snapped
Brett rolled his eyes.
“Fine,” he replied, “whatever.”
Brett turned and stormed off. Penny hugged herself anxiously. She didn’t want to do that to Brett something was seriously wrong with her.
“Little harsh don’t you think?” The Wanderer said from the doorway
Penny turned to see The Wanderer leaning against the doorway casually.
“Brett’s not thinking with his head” Penny replied
“That’s no reason to bite it off he’s doing his best Pen.”
“That’s not good enough anymore,” Penny replied, “We dropped our guard today and I nearly lost someone. This Rorgia is not going to rest up he’s going to keep moving forward with his plan and if we don’t find a solution . . .”
“I?” The Wanderer asked curiously, “I lose people?”
Penny stopped and looked around anxiously.
“I meant ‘we’”
“No you didn’t,” The Wanderer replied,” you meant ‘I’”
He noticed the fear and confusion in Penny’s eyes and knew straight away what was going on.
“You’re still having the nightmares aren’t you?”
Penny looked up at The Wanderer in anger.
“So?”
“that’s your mind is telling you that there is something you haven’t dealt with.”
The Wanderer walked up and put his hands supportively on her shoulders.
“The Battle of Trinity was a horrible tragedy. You can’t keep holding back on the emotions surrounding it,” he said softly, “You need help Penny.”
Penny brushed The Wanderer hands off her shoulder.
“What I need is people to do their jobs!” she replied, “or I’m going to have to find myself a new team.”
Penny turned sharply and walked out of the car park. The Wanderer watched this extremely worried. He’s worked in a war zone before and had seen what Penny was going through.
It was going to get a lot worse before it got any better.
