The library at Sunnydale High is once again filled with the likes of Giles, Willow, Xander, and a face not seen for some time now, Ms. Calendar. A fact that Buffy takes note of as she enters the library, "What's she doing here?", Buffy asks her friends. "I care about you guys,", Jenny replies looking at Rupert, "and I'm here to help.". "So how did last night go?", Giles asks Buffy trying to change the subject.
"Not good.", Buffy answers.
"So I take it Angel still, um... for lack of a better term, lives.", Giles says.
"Afraid so.", Buffy replies.
"Well, that's good.", Willow adds.
With a bewildered look Giles asks, "Pardon me?".
"Did you leave your brain at home today, Will?", Xander asks.
"I meant that now we have a chance to try and return Angel's soul to his body.", Willow continues.
"What are you talking about?", Giles asks.
"If I may?", Jenny asks Willow who nods in reply. "Willow came to me last night to help her. We stayed up half the night and I believe we found something.", Jenny continues.
"What is it? What did you find?", Buffy asks.
"We found a ritual that once performed will exorcise the demon from Angel's body allowing his lost soul to return to its body.", Jenny answers.
"So what do we have to do?", Buffy asks Ms. Calendar.
"For right now there is nothing we can do. We don't have Angel with us to perform the ritual and I haven't fully translated the text,", Jenny replies.
"I will help Ms. Calendar with the translation and you three will start on a plan to capture Angel.", Giles says.
Everyone stands up to leave when Giles adds, "Buffy, I'd like to speak with you before you leave.".
As the others leave Buffy stays behind to talk with Giles, "So what other good news do you have to give me?", she asks. "Don't take this the wrong way, but I decided to do a little research on your friend Erik and it appears that there is more to him than he has led you to believe.", Giles replies. "Great,... well come out with it already.", Buffy remarks. "It seems that Erik is not his full name... in the text he is referred to as Erik the Red for his bloody ruthlessness when he was of the Order of Teraka.", Giles answers. "Erik must've overlooked that 'tiny' detail.", Buffy says angrily. "This would explain his amazing fighting prowess and his immortality, but I am at a loss when it comes to his motives with you.", Giles continues, "I know that you must feel betrayed, but I think you should go to him and let him try and explain.". "I should really get to class, can't save the world if I'm stuck in detention you know.", Buffy says as she storms off.
That night Buffy sits in her bedroom talking on the phone with her best bud Willow, "I don't know. I thought this time would be different.", Buffy talks into the phone. "Maybe it's not as bad as you think.", Willow says trying to comfort her friend. "I'm just not going to have a normal life so long as I'm the Slayer.", Buffy continues. She turns her head to look out the window and sees Erik standing there, "Look, I've gotta go.", Buffy tells Willow. She hangs up the phone and turns her back to Erik as she says , "I thought I could trust you... I thought you trusted me".
"You can trust me as much as I trust you.", Erik replies.
"Then why couldn't you tell me that you were a Terakan assassin?", Buffy asks.
"It was a long time ago and I didn't think that you needed one more thing to worry about.", Erik answers. "Spare me the sympathy.", Buffy says as she turns back around, "It's time to tell me everything, starting from the beginning.". He replies, "Fine. My name is Erik, Erik the Red, I was given that name by the Order of Teraka due to the ruthlessness I showed when assassinating a mark. I went out of my way to destroy anything, or anyone, that stood in my way. Then about one thousand years ago I was ordered to take out the then current Slayer, I accepted the order but little did I know that my life would change forever. I had infiltrated the village where the Slayer was living, and that's where I met and fell in love with a woman. One cannot realize the changing powers of the love of another, until it changes you. When I had not succeeded in dispatching of the Slayer, the Order of Teraka sent other assassins that slaughtered the entire village to get to their mark, including my love. I managed to protect the Slayer from her potential assassins and drove the Terakans out of the village. From that moment on, I vowed to protect the innocent from monsters like the Terakans. "I'm sorry.", Buffy says as she tries to sympathize with him.
"Don't be.", Erik replies as he caresses her cheek and uses his fingers to push a lock of hair behind her ear. They gaze into each other's eyes before they engage in a heated kiss that seems to be more passionate than any other kiss they had shared before. 'I wish this moment would never end.', Buffy thinks to herself. Then the phone rings, once, twice, and on the third ring, the two reluctantly break from their embrace and Buffy answers the phone, "H-Hello?". "Buffy, it's Giles, you need to come to the library as soon as possible", the voice on the other end of the line says. "I'm on my way.", Buffy says as she hangs up the phone.
Others may think that the library is an unusual place to be after midnight, but Giles, Willow, Xander, and Ms. Calendar had better things to think about. "We've been here all night.", Xander whines, "You know I've got plenty of other things I could be doing right now.". "Like what?", Willow asks with a sarcastic grin on her face. "Well, um... you know I am missing Baywatch.", Xander replies. At that moment Buffy and Erik come through the library doors. Erik's presence surprise's everyone, particularly Xander, "So this must be Erik. How are you? Glad to see ya?", he says as he stands up. "We don't have time for this, Xander", Giles says as he frowns at Xander. "What's up, Giles? Did you guys translate the ritual?". Giles replies, "Yes. Everything's prepared, except for Angel...". "Excuse me for interrupting,", Erik says as he turns to Buffy, "can I talk with you privately?".
Buffy and Erik go out to the hallway and Erik asks, "What's going on, Buffy?".
"We're working on a ritual to return Angel's soul to his body.", Buffy answers.
"And you didn't think of telling me before because?", Erik asks.
"The ritual is a long shot at best and anyway I just found out about it yesterday.", Buffy replies.
Xander opens the library door and peeks his head out to say, "If you two are done, we have business to attend to.". Buffy and Erik walk back into the library rejoining the conversation, "Does anybody have any ideas on how we are going to capture Angel?", Giles asks looking around the room for a response. After a few moments Erik breaks the silence, "Just leave it to Buffy and me.". Buffy looks at Erik and asks, "What do you have planned?". "Just trust me.", Erik replies. "So it's settled then, we'll have everything ready to perform the ritual tomorrow night and you two will bring the guest of honor.", Giles says as the others nod their heads in agreement.
