Chapter 3: Willow
“Well that was embarrassing.” Kennedy spoke aloud to herself, as she stepped out into the back yard of the Summers’ house, thinking about what Spike had just walked in on.
“What was?” said a silky voice coming from behind her, grabbing Kennedy’s immediate attention.
“Willow…hi!” Kennedy turned around, surprised to see the redhead.
“So what was embarrassing?”
“Oh, um, nothing…” Kennedy began, avoiding eye contact with the witch, trying to think of a convincing story, “Andrew, you know, a constant embarrassment.” she lied.
“Tell me about it!” Willow joked, “Have you seen his big board!?”
“Yeah” Kennedy let out a false laugh, trying to interact normally with the woman whom she had wanted so badly, still did. All she’d wanted for days was to talk to her like this, and now, just as something was happening with Anya, she decided to make contact! Unbelievable timing!
“I was going to come down to the basement earlier to see if you found Anya ok after”
“Found her ok…?!” Kennedy said, wondering how much Willow knew.
“Yeah you know, ‘cause she was looking for you.”
“Oh right, yeah,” Kennedy said relieved, “And you didn’t get as far as the basement?”
“No, I saw Spike and he said you shouldn’t be disturbed.”
“Oh?! He did? And, um…did he say anything about what I was doing?” Kennedy asked, thinking of how she would kill Spike if he’d revealed anything of what he had seen.
“Nah, he just said you were busy,” Willow answered, “What were you doing?”
“Training” Kennedy lied quickly, too quickly. Willow was smarter than to except that too easily.
“With Anya?” she said sceptically.
“Well, um, I was training and Anya was…talking…” Kennedy said looking up at the sky to avoid Willows eyes, just as the sun was setting.
“Oh,” Willow said, seemingly satisfied with Kennedy’s explanation, “What did Anya want to talk to you about?”
“Oh, you know Anya…” Kennedy began, stalling to try and think of a reasonable answer.
“Yeah!” Willow started, “She probably wanted to check if you’re anti-demon enough to be interested in trying to ‘slay’ her! Subtly though, of course!”
“Not much gets past you!” Kennedy said, jumping at this perfect cover story, not willing to let slip what had happened, or almost happened, between her and Anya in front of a person she still very much liked.
“She’s always been the same, and I couldn’t think of any other why she would want to talk to you”
“Thanks,” Kennedy snapped at Willow’s words, “I mean why would any one want to talk to just another potential right!?”
“I didn’t mean it like that!”
“Sure you didn’t” Kennedy retorted angrily. She couldn’t believe she had thought Willow was different. ‘She really does see me as just another potential’ she thought bitterly to herself.
“Actually it was supposed to be more of a compliment”
“Oh yeah!? And how’s that exactly!?”
“Well if Anya’s worried about you being a threat then it shows she sees your power”
“Oh,” Kennedy said quietly, embarrassed at how she had reacted, “Sorry to jump down your throat like that”
At that Kennedy let out a quiet laugh at her choice of words. After all when hadn’t she been thinking of getting into Willow’s mouth, apart from maybe when she was thinking about Anya…
“Its ok!” Willow said smiling, “I’m sorry too, I have a tendency to have a little foot in mouth problem!”
“You really think people can see my power?!” Kennedy said, pleased at the knowledge that she was appreciated.
“Even I noticed you are fit…” Willow blushed.
“Fit?” Kennedy asked excitedly.
“…in a training sense I mean…” Willow tried to correct her slip.
“Of course!” Kennedy said sarcastically.
“I gotta go” Willow said blushing heavier now.
“Sure” Kennedy said, as she watched the embarrassed redhead practically run back into the house, with longing eyes.
“Looks like you’ve got some interesting decisions to make!” Spike’s voice came from out behind some bushes.
“Why do you always seem to be around when you are least wanted?”
“I’ve got to get my kicks someway!” Spike exclaimed “And it so happens that watching your little love triangle play out is about as exciting as it gets for me around here!”
“How sad for you” Kennedy said without the slightest sympathy.
“I’ve just been thinking actually about how I can stir it up a bit more for you actually,” Spike said tauntingly, “Like how about I tell red what I really saw you getting up to in the basement!”
“Just because Buffy has a problem with killing you now that you’re all neutered and helpless, don’t think I do!” Kennedy said threateningly.
“Just try it wannabe!”
“You’re not worth it!” Kennedy said and headed once more for the house. As much as she hated to admit it, Spike was right. Although there was nothing Kennedy didn’t like with the attention of two hot girls, she’d have to make a decision, and soon…
