Spike jumped when he saw Dawn as he came upstairs. “What are you doing, lurking about?” He asked.
“I’m not lurking,” Dawn said.
Spike raised an eyebrow at her. “Does your sister or your mom know you’re here?” He asked.
“No. They don’t care,” Dawn said, sitting on the sarcophagus.
Spike eyed her carefully. “That’s not true and you know it,” he said, softly. “And if I let you stay here, you’re gunna get me in trouble.”
“I’ll make a deal with you. You let me stay here for now, and you can take me home when the sun goes down. Deal?” Dawn asked, her eyes turning liquid.
“Oh no, not the eyes,” he said, but couldn’t help himself. “Fine, you can stay.”
Dawn smiled. “Thanks. What do you know about history?” She asked, pulling out her homework.
“Depends on what you wanna know,” he said, sitting next to her.
Dawn showed him the worksheet. “I haven’t been going to school for awhile so I’m behind,” she said.
Spike paced as he read the worksheet. “Why haven’t you been going to school?” He asked.
“It’s pointless,” she said.
Spike went over to her. “Do you have your history book?”
Dawn pulled the book out and opened to the chapter. Spike turned to the page he wanted and
put it in front of her. “Read.”
Dawn looked up at him and he smiled. “K,” she said.
About 15 minutes later, Dawn picked up her head. “Now what?”
Spike handed her the worksheet. “Answer the questions for memory then we’ll go from there,” he said.
When the sun finally set, Dawn had fallen asleep amongst her school books.
Spike smiled and began packing up her stuff. Just has he was closing her bag, the door opened.
“Spike..” Buffy began but Spike covered her mouth.
“Chill out Slayer. She’s sleeping,” Spike said, in a soft voice.
“Why is she here, and why did you let her stay?” She asked.
“Because she wouldn’t leave. I’ve been helping her with her with her homework and I was waiting for the sun to set so I could take her home. Here, carry this,” he said, giving her Dawn’s bag.
Buffy took the bag and watched as Spike carefully lifted Dawn in his arms.
Spike followed Buffy home and he took Dawn upstairs. Gently, he laid her in bed and left Buffy with her.
He went downstairs and sat at the counter with Joyce. “So, are you hoarding my daughter at your crypt?” She asked.
“No. She wanted to stay and I told her I would take her home at sunset. I helped her with her homework and got her caught up in her classes. Just tired her out,” he said. “She’s safe with me Joyce, trust me.”
Joyce smiled. “I guess it’s okay. As long as I know where she is,” she said.
Buffy came down and came into the kitchen. “Spike, we were really worried about her,” she said, crossing her arms.
“What was I supposed to do?” Spike asked. “March her home in the middle of the day?”
Buffy scowled. “Look, I’m sorry. I just cant deal with Dawn disappearing right now. I have enough to deal with,” she said, sitting next to him.
“You know I’m here if you need help,” he said.
Buffy’s face softened. “I know. I guess it wouldn’t hurt if Dawn went to Spike’s after school,” she said, looking at her mom. “Then he can bring her home when the sun goes down and we can patrol.” She looked back at Spike. “Am I gunna have to pay you?”
Spike gave her a small smile. “No, I don’t mind watching her,” he said. “I’ll see you ladies tomorrow,” he said, smiling before leaving.
Buffy looked at her mom. “Does he look or act different to you?” She asked.
Joyce smiled. “Maybe a little. I think he’s in love with you, but he’s very good at keeping secrets,” she said.
“Spike? In love with me? I don’t think so,” Buffy said.
“Buffy, next time he looks at you, look into his eyes. You’ll know what I’m talking about. Are you denying it because you feel the same?”
Buffy eyes widened. “No! I mean, Spike and I hate each other. He doesn’t love me,” she said, avoiding her mother’s gaze.
“Right, sweetie. You keep telling yourself that,” Joyce said, going upstairs.
Buffy watched her mother go upstairs and went out for patrol.
She walked around for awhile and noticed Spike fighting a group of vampires. She stopped and observed him for a few minutes before stepping in.
“Slayer?” Spike asked, avoiding a fist to his face.
“Just thought you might like some company,” she said, staking two vampires.
Spike staked a vampire and watched as Buffy staked the last one. “You okay?”
“Yeah. No big deal. My mom brought up an interesting point you though,” she said.
“Uh oh. You’re not gunna hit me are you?” Spike asked.
“No. You’ve been acting differently. You wanna tell me something?” She asked.
“Not really. Why?” He asked.
“Because you…” Before she could finished Spike tackled her. “What?”
Spike covered her mouth. “It’s Dru. Don’t move,” he said, ignoring the pain from his chip.
Buffy relaxed beneath him and tried to slow her breathing.
Spike watched as Dru walked toward his crypt. “Damn!” He hissed.
He saw the door close and got off Buffy. “Sorry if I hurt you,” he said, offering his hand.
“Don’t worry about it,” she said, sliding her hand into his.
Spike pulled her to her feet. “She killed the people on the train,” he said.
“How do you know about that?” Buffy asked.
“I saw the paper. And you know I’m sorry about having Dawn without you knowing.”
“I just get worried easily. I didn’t know if you’d care that she wasn’t real,” she said, softly.
“I do care. Care about all of you except Harris,” he said. “Just don’t show it. Only to your mom and the Nibblet.”
Buffy smiled a little. “Spike, my mom said that you um…that you…” She blushed lightly. “Oh god this is weird. She said… that you… were… never mind. I’ll tell you later,” she said.
Spike raised an eyebrow. “Okay,” he said, slowly. “You want me to walk you home?”
“Why not?” She said, as they walked toward her house.
On Buffy’s porch, Buffy paused before going in. She opened the door and looked at him. “My mom said that you’re in love with me and that’s why you’ve been acting all weird,” she said, quickly.
Spike’s eyes widened them he regained his composure. “Your mom pays attention,” he said, smiling at her.
Buffy began to smiled. “Goodnight Spike,” she said, softly, before going in.
“Goodnight Buffy,” he said, watching her go towards the stairs.
Buffy climbed the stairs in a daze. “He loves me,” she said, to herself.
Buffy’s mom came out of her room. “Who loves you?” She asked.
“Spike does. He more or less just admitted it,” she said, going to her window.
Spike was on the sidewalk looking up at her window, smoking a cigarette.
Buffy leaned against her window and couldn’t help but smile.
“Honey?” Joyce asked.
“Hmm?” Buffy mumbled.
“Just give him a chance,” Joyce said.
Buffy looked at her mom. “I’ve tried the vampire thing. What if it doesn’t work?” She asked.
“Spike’s not Angel, Buffy. What if it does
work?” Joyce asked.
Buffy smiled. “I’ll think about it,” she said, looking back at Spike.
Joyce smiled and shook her head. “Goodnight Honey,” she said, leaving.
“Nite,” Buffy said.
After a few more minutes, Buffy pulled
herself away from the window and crawled into bed. She fell into a peaceful sleep with a smile on her face.
