Gypsy’s car sped down the road. Inside Gypsy was a picture of concentration while Shona was panicked.
“What the hell was that back there?” she asked
“That was Talon.” Gypsy replied
Shona shot him a look.
“Yeah, thanks, I was there for the meet and greet. What the hell is he?”
“He’s the same as us,” Gypsy explained, “Just a little more juiced up. Talon was the first to be hit by the rift.”
“What in the hell is this rift thing you keep talkin’ about?”
Gypsy looked over to Shona. He returned his eyes to the road and took a deep breath.
“Alright this is gonna take a bit to explain. Do you remember a few years ago Wolfram and Hart tried to merge this reality with the hell dimension?” he asked
“I should they used my friend to do it.”
“Yeah, well, that left the walls of this reality weak and vulnerably and about a year later that’s when That’s Rift first appeared.”
Shona looked at him in confusion.
“Say that again but this time use English.” She replied
“Big hole in sky makes bad stuff happen alright? The energy that comes through does weird things to whatever it touches. Think of it like a Hellmouth but more portable.”
“Damn.” Shona replied
“That’s not it the rift also acts a as gateway,” Gypsy continued, “Parallels like to use it to get into this reality.”
“Parallels? What the hell are they?”
“Demons from other dimensions. They like to think of this world as their own personal playground because most of its population doesn’t know they exist.”
“How does Talon fit into this?”
“Like I said he was the first. He caught a massive dose when it first opened and it corrupted him.”
Shona tried to piece the image together in her head but it wasn’t fitting correctly
“So that’s why this Talon guy is hunting us down right he want’s us to join him.” she stated
“No.” Gypsy replied
“They why the light show back there?”
“What do men with power want Shona?”
“More power.”
“Right, he want’s to suck us all dry so he can become ‘all powerful’”
“And you’re trying to stop him right?”
Gypsy laughed.
“Yeah, right, like I’m gonna go up against Talon. I’m trying to get the hell away from him as fast as possible. That’s why I came to find you to tell you to do the same thing.”
“Oh hell no.” Shona replied, “he picked a fight with me now I’m gonna pick it right back.”
Gypsy looked at her in shock.
“Are you insane? You saw what the guy did with the glowy red flame thing he’s gonna char broil you before you get ten feet near him.”
“I ain’t back down from a fight before and I’m sure as hell not gonna do it now,” Shona snapped, “I’ve dealt with invulnerable vampires, uber-slayers, evil lawyers and, hell, I’ve even dealt with Nighthawk. Believe me I’ve seen worse that what county club is gonna throw at me.”
“Well, good luck let me know what you want in your obituary.”
Shona looked at him and shook her head,
“Oh my god.” She said
Gypsy looked at her curiously.
“What?” he asked
“He’s got you pussy-whipped.”
“No he hasn’t.”
“All he had to do was go human torch on you and you’re running for your momma.”
“Hey! I’m not scared of him”
Gypsy noticed the look Shona was giving him
“Don’t look at me like that I said I’m not scared of him and I’m not!”
“You’re not?”
“No.”
“You sure?”
“Yeah I’m sure.”
Shona was still giving him that look which started to get under his skin. After a few moments he rolled his eyes.
“Alright maybe a little.”
“Hah! Knew it Pussy-whipped. He’s got you jumpin’ through hoops.”
“So? What can we do about it?”
“Make him jump.”
“And how are we supposed to do that?”
“I was thinkin’ maybe poundin’ the livin’ crap out of him could get our message across.”
“We’re going to need crap pounding supplies for that.”
“Know just the place,” Shona replied, “Turn left here.”
Gypsy complied and went around the corner.
“Where are we going?” he asked
“Los Angeles.” Shona replied
~ The abandoned club formally known as “Gen s”, Los Angeles California – an hour later ~
The sound of breaking wood and glass echoed through the empty dance floor. Shona and Gypsy clamed in through the window and scoped out the room. It was a mess with tables and chairs overturned in a sloppy search kind of way. Every square inch was covered in dust which was kicked up when the pair made their way to the back room.
“So this was the slayer club huh?” Gypsy commented, “Not as big as I thought it would be.”
“This place was a second home back in the day. It was the place to be when you weren’t staking things.” Shona replied
They made their way into the training room and Shona made her way to the weapons cupboard.
“I head a few bads were planning on hitting this place a number of times. ‘Course you’d have to be completely insane to attack a place holding three hundred slayers. Though there was this one story about a woman who destroyed the other club.”
“Becky.” Shona replied checking the condition of the weapons
Gypsy looked at her curiously
“What?” he asked
“Her name was Becky, she hit club Hellmouth at peak hour, one hundred and twenty six slayers died that night.”
“Becky? You don’t mean that Becky do you?”
“Know any other?”
“Wow, and I thought she was a bitch in our reality.”
Shona had finished checking out the weapons. They all looked like they were in good condition. What surprised her most is that they were still here. She remembered Buffy saying that everything was taken but it just looked like things were thrown around. Shona dropped both huge bags onto the ground and started to load them with weapons. About half way through she stopped and stared at one particular weapon.
“Oh my god,” Shona exclaimed reaching for the weapon
“What? What is it?” Gypsy asked
“Damn Buffy you were holdin’ out on me.”
Shona pulled out the pump action crossbow and grinned like a ten year old. She checked its aim excitedly.
“Man this is a thing of beauty.” She said
“It sure is,” a voice said as a figure entered the room, “though not as beautiful as the girl holding it.”
Shona swung around and aimed the loaded bow. Whistler put his hands up defensively.
“Whoa! Easy there with the pointy wood.” He said
“Go ahead shoot,” Gypsy said, “Don’t think anybody would mind.”
Whistler gave him a look
“You’re a real people person do you know that?”
“Maybe but you’re not people,” Gypsy replied.
Whistler smiled at him. He wandered slowly into the room looking Shona up and down.
“I see you got Miss Mayers on board good for you?”
Shona turned slowly and looked at Gypsy.
“What the hell is he talking about?”
“Beat’s me,” Gypsy replied keeping his gaze squarely fixed on whistler, “He and that woman keep chasing me because of their crazy ideas.”
“That woman has a name.” Aurora said from behind him
“And I’d like to use it but I have this thing about swearing in front of women.”
Aurora glared at Gypsy for a moment before she shifted her attention to Shona.
“It’s an honor to meet you Shona.” She said, “I am Aurora.”
“Alright I am sick of people comin’ out of nowhere!” Shona snapped, “Somebody tell me what the hell’s goin’ on or I start shooting arrows.”
“Shona we need you and Gypsy to close the rift.”
Gypsy burst out in laughter.
“I’m sorry it’s still funny every time you say it.” Gipsy replied
“This is not a joking manner Gypsy. This is serious.”
“Right, serious, hey wasn’t that the reason you were kicked out of the Powers That Be?”
Aurora shot an annoyed look at Gypsy while Shona stared at Aurora curiously.
“Is he serious?” Shona asked, “You were a power?”
“Once but that was a long time ago,” Aurora said anxiously, “We have more pressing issues. Like I said we need you two to close the rift you two are the only ones capable of doing it.”
Gypsy folded his arms and smirked at her.
“Go on,” he said, “Tell her how we’re gonna do it.”
Whistler and aurora looked at each other.
“We don’t actually know,” Aurora admitted, “But our research is getting us close to an answer.”
Gypsy walked up next to Shona
“Wow, research, well my fears are cleared up how about yours Shona?”
“I don’t know about my fears but my trigger fingers getting itchy.”
“Oh we don’t need to go down that path, I mean, they must know where it is right now right?”
Gypsy smiled at Aurora who looked at the both of them with a guilty expression.
“We . . . Don’t know that either . . .”
Gypsy turned to Shona and gestured to Aurora.
“And this is the brains of the operation.”
“ . . . But what we do know is that you can find it.”
“Alright, I’ll play, how’d we find it?” Shona replied
“Haven’t you been feeling it?” Aurora replied, “The energy?”
Shona frowned. She had been feeling something weird ever since she was brought back from the dead. She didn’t want to let this ruin her resolve.
“So what if I’ve been feelin’ stuff.”
“You two are linked to the rift by it’s energies,” Aurora explained, “Where it goes you shall follow you will know it’s there before it opens.”
“She gave up he job with greeting cards.” Gypsy replied, “I don’t know how many time I have to explain this to you Aurora this is not going to work! You want us to chase after something we don’t know how to close or how far away it’s going to be.”
“But there was a reason why you were chosen.”
“What chosen? It opened near by.”
“So you think the rift works at random? Then why are the only real survivors a slayer and a vampire? Natural opposites.”
“You got to admit that’s a real mind bender kid.” Whistler commented, “You two were brought together for a reason. Whatever it is you both have a chance to do real good.”
Shona and Gypsy looked at each other. Slowly Shona nodded.
“You’re right,” she said, “I gotta shot his ass.”
Shona raised the crossbow and aimed it at Whistler. Just then the crossbow glowed red and was knocked out of Shona’s hands. Suddenly she was flung across the room into Talons hand. The others stood around defensively as he held Shona by the neck. Shona struggled as she gasped for breath.
“I’m a little disappointed,” Talon, “This was much easier then it should have been.”
“I am warning you talon let her go.”
Talon thought about this for a moment.
“No I like her where she is.”
Gypsy slowly moved for the crossbow. Talon shot him a look.
“Hold it Vampire,” He snapped, “Unless you want Girl Friday vaporized in front of you you’re going to say right where you are.”
“Don’t think this is over Talon!”
Talon placed his hand on Shona’s stomach. It started to glow and draw energy from her.
“Actually I think this is the dictionary definition of over,” he said.
He turned and smiled at Shona who was slowly loosing consciousness.
“So sorry we didn’t get to know each other Girl Friday.” He said menacingly
