Sheila paced in front of Addison, wringing her hands together. Buffy was sitting, curled up, in an easy chair in the living room. Addison rubbed her temples, feeling a headache coming on. She had screwed up, big time. Buffy wasn’t supposed to find out like this, maybe she wasn’t even supposed to find out at all.
“Addison! You and Angel were supposed to lay low! Especially with Buffy patrolling by herself now! You know that she’s very fragile and seeing you with Angel might have sent her over the edge!” Sheila admonished in hushed tones. Addison sighed and ran her hands through her hair.
“I know, Sheila. I had no idea that Buffy would patrol that part of town. I mean, she patrolled it last night, why would she sweep it two nights in a row?” Addison asked, frustrated with herself. How had she screwed up this badly?
“Okay, you and Buffy need to have a serious conversation. Really, you need to have a long talk, get everything out. Talk about why you went to her in the first place, why you need her now. Got it?” Sheila asked. Addison was taken aback by her harsh tone. Sheila was pissed.
“Yeah, I got it.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Hey,” Addison said as she sat down in the chair across from Buffy, a steaming cup of Chai in her hands. Buffy looked at her through misty eyes.
“Hey.”
“Look, I want to explain to you what’s going on. So, can we talk?” Addison asked. Buffy took a sip of her now cool tea and paused.
“Go ahead. We can talk,” Buffy shrugged, seeming disinterested. Addison took a deep breath and braced herself for the coming conversation.
“Okay, so I think you should know the reason that I came to you in the first place. I had a dream, one night, about you. Sort of. It was about some of the major points in your relationship with Angel. I won’t lie, it scared me. I felt the power that your past had on him, and I was scared. I didn’t want to lose the love of my life. So, I tracked you down to learn everything about you and your life with Angel,” Addison explained, blushing slightly from embarrassment.
“So, why didn’t you just tell me about Angel in the first place?” Buffy asked, the mist in her eyes replaced by a hardness that Addison had never seen.
“Because, I heard what had happened. About the letter, about you losing it after you read it, about everything. I saw how much it hurt you to even mention him. I felt bad for you, I couldn’t come out and tell you “ha, ha, I won.” I couldn’t do that.” Addison admitted.
“Addy, I’m a slayer, I should be able to handle anything. And it wasn’t just Angel’s letter that sent me over the edge. It was everything that was happening. Trust me, it might have been better had you just told me,” Buffy said.
“I know. Look, I screwed up, but I thought you wouldn’t want to come with us if you knew, and I need you Buffy. I need your support, and your knowledge, and your expertise. I can’t do this without you, seriously. I need you,” Addison said sternly.
“Okay. I’ll stay, well I really don’t have a choice cause where else would I go, but I don’t want to be all buddy, buddy with Angel. I’ll be polite, and you don’t have to hide him, but I will not be his friend,” Buffy demanded. Addison nodded.
“I completely understand. Buffy, I never meant for you to get hurt,” Addison apologized once more.
“Why don’t you invite Angel over for dinner?” Buffy suggested, trying her best to be nice. Surprise registered on Addison’s face.
“Well, actually, why don’t you and Sheila come over to Angel’s place. That way you can just leave whenever you want,” Addison suggested, giving Buffy an out.
“Sure. Six?” Addison agreed and ran home to Angel.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Angel!” Addison yelled through the mansion as she took the stairs two at a time. She knew he was there, she could feel him.
“Is that my baby?” Angel called from the bedroom.
“It sure is!”
“How’s Buffy doing with this whole thing?” Angel asked after a deep kiss from Addison.
“Well, she and Sheila are coming to dinner tonight,” Addison shrugged. Angel stopped and raised his eyebrows.
“What?” Angel asked, shocked. Addison reached up on her tiptoes and kissed Angel’s chin.
“Buffy and Sheila are coming for dinner. I thought I might whip up some of my famous lasagne and you could make some of your chocolate mousse and we’d all have a good time. Was it a bad call?” Addison asked.
“No, no, not at all, baby. What time are they coming over?” Angel asked, recovered from his moment of discomfort.
“Six. We have three hours.”
“I guess we’d better get cooking,” Angel shrugged.
Three hours later, everything was perfect. Addison had cooked the food and Angel had set the table, putting out his fine china and lighting two candles. Then he started the mousse. They had taken a shower together, to save time (no really! It was just to save time!), and then Addison had slipped into a silk print dress and heels. Angel was in jeans and a black sport coat.
“Addy?!” Sheila shouted from the doorway. Addison jumped from her seat in front of the mirror and bounded down the stairs on three inch heels.
“Hey guys! Dinner’s in about a minute, so if we get drinks and stuff, we should be right on time,” Addison smiled as she led Sheila and Buffy into the large dining room.
“Addison, isn’t this the house you said a lawyer lived in?” Buffy asked as she and Sheila sat down at the table.
“Yes, and Angel is a lawyer. He made his own ‘anti-WRH’ law firm. Supernatural, but good,” Addison explained. Buffy nodded as Angel came out and served the food.
“Hello Buffy, Sheila,” Angel nodded, still not quite meeting Buffy’s eyes. He reached over and kissed Sheila’s cheek.
“So, you two are getting married?” Sheila stated, trying to start the conversation.
“Yep,” Addison nodded, wanting to steer away from talking about her and Angel.
“Angel?” Buffy asked suddenly, putting down her fork.
“What?” Angel asked.
“Do you love her? Are you willing to work to keep her? Are you going to fight harder for the two of you than you fought for us?” Buffy asked. Sadness filled her eyes. Angel looked at her intently, really looked at her, for the first time since the last night they had spent together.
“Yes. Absolutely yes,” Angel said softly. Buffy absorbed his answer and nodded.
“Good, because if you hurt her, I swear to God I will kill you. I’ve done it before, you know I’ll do it again,” Buffy warned. A broad smile spread over Addison’s face.
“Thank you, Buffy,” Addison said. Buffy nodded, and smiled.
“Well, aren’t we just one big happy family,” Sheila grinned.
