Connor pulled into Dawn’s driveway and got out of the car. He had just dropped off Fred at her parents’ house and after he dropped Dawn off he was going to tell his parents what had happened. He had told his mom to call his dad and ell him they all needed to sit down and talk together so he expected to find his dad brooding when he got home.

Connor got out of the car to help Dawn with her stuff. He looked over at her to find she was still sitting in the car and she didn’t make a move to get out.

“Are you going to get out of the car?” he asked her.

She looked at him and then back at her house, “When I walk through that door she won’t be there and it’ll be real.”

Connor put down Dawn’s suitcase and sat down beside her in the backseat of the car.

“Everything’s gonna change,” Dawn said and Connor knew she wasn’t just talking about her mother’s death.

“Nothing stays the same forever.”

“I know.”

“Do you want me to go in with you?”

“No, you have your own stuff to deal with.”

“Dawn….”

“I’m not mad. I’m just tired. It’s not your fault well it is but I mean it's not your fault that I’m upset you didn’t know she would get pregnant.”

“No I didn’t.”

Dawn smiled at him and gave him a small kiss on the cheek before getting out of the car. Connor watched her grab her suitcase and walk up to the door as he got into the front seat of the car. She turned back and waved. He smiled and pulled out of the driveway as the front door opened and Buffy came out enveloping her sister in a hug.

Connor just stared at his parents as he sat on the couch and looked up at them both of whom were standing. He had just told them that Fred was pregnant and they had yet to respond. His palms were slick with sweat as his mother began to pace back and forth.

“How….” Angel began and then stopped, “What were you….didn’t you…..you should have…..you’re only…..poor judgment…didn’t we teach you….”

“Connor maybe you should go up to your room,” Darla, his mother told him.

Connor nodded and headed upstairs.

Darla stood in the kitchen while Angel paced back and forth.

“I’m going to kill him,” Angel said, “How could he make this bad a judgment call. I’ll kill him.”

“Maybe we should just calm down,” Darla said.

Angel turned towards her, “Calm down! Darla our son got a girl pregnant and she’s not even his girlfriend anymore!”

“We need to sit down with Fred’s parents and talk about this, decide what to do.”

Angel sighed, “I know.”

Darla put her hand on his shoulder, “Hey, we’ll get through this.”

“How can you be so calm?”

“Well it did happen to us.”

Angel laughed, “Like father like son.”

Connor listened to his parents talk as he sat on the steps.

“How about we go see Fred’s parents tomorrow after the funeral.”

“Funeral? Who died?”

“Joyce Summers, I thought you knew.”

Angel shook his head and covered his face with his hands. He looked back up at his ex-wife and nodded, “We’ll talk to them after the funeral.”

**************

Dawn is sitting in the dinning room with Buffy, Giles (Buffy and Dawn’s godfather), Xander, and Willow.

“Uh, what about an announcement? People are gonna be expecting a wake after the burial unless we say something,” Buffy said to Giles.

“Um, well, we could put a, a line in the program expressing your mother's preference not to have one,” he replied.

“There's no wake?” Willow asked.

“Mom didn't like them. She said that potlucks are depressing enough as it is,” Buffy replied.

“She said that? When?” Dawn asked.

“Uh, right before she went in for the operation. We had a talk about what she wanted ... in case.”

“She never said anything to me.”

“I'm sure she just didn't wanna upset you, Dawnster. Now you better get to work on that dinner. You barely touched it,” Xander told her.

“You really should eat something,” Buffy chimed in.

“Why should I? You're not,” Dawn said.

“This isn't about….”

The cordless phone on the table rang. Buffy sighed.

“I'm all phoned out. Will you? Unless it's my dad,” Buffy asked Giles.

“Of course,” He replied, picking up the phone and leaving the room, “Hello?...Yes, yes they did….Thank you…..The, uh, funeral is at, uh, three tomorrow. Do you know the Brown Brothers mortuary?”

“Can't believe he still hasn't called,” Buffy said.

“Your dad's still AWOL, huh?” Xander asked.

“The number he left for us in Spain is no good, and I've left messages everywhere. Um, how about a line that just says, 'Following the burial, there will be no wake'? Or gathering? 'At the request of Joyce, there will be no gathering'? Uch, that sounds lame,” she said, hitting her head with her hand in frustration.

Xander and Willow looked at their friend concerned. Buffy looked up and then at her watch, “You guys should go its getting late.”

“Its okay if you need us….” Xander began.

“No, I just wanna get some rest.”

“Okay,” Willow said, hugging her best friend goodbye before she and Xander got their coats and let themselves out.

Dawn sat next to her big sister. She really wanted to talk to her about everything that had happened with Connor, and about her mom but she didn’t think now was the right time, “Buffy?”

“Yeah Dawn.”

“I love you.”

Buffy smiled and hugged her sister, “I love you too Dawn. Hey you never told me how was camp? I got you’re letter it sounded like you were having fun and whatever happened with you and Connor?”

“I’ll tell you about it later,” Dawn said, “Right now I just want to go to bed.”

“Okay,” Buffy said as Dawn got up and headed upstairs to her room. She looked around and her eyes fell on a picture of her, her mom, and Buffy. She picked it up and threw it against the wall, breaking down in tears.

“Dawn! Is everything okay?!” her sister yelled from downstairs.

“Yeah, I just dropped something! I’ll clean it up!” Dawn yelled back.

She sighed and grabbed her waste paper basket and brought it over to where the fallen shards of glass had fallen on the ground. Carefully she began to pick up the pieces and place them in the basket.

Dawn hissed in pain as a piece of glass cut the palm of her hand causing bright red blood to ooze out. She leaned against the wall and sucked her wound, trying to make it feel better. As she nursed her cut she looked down at the floor where the piece of glass now stained with her blood was lying. Gently she picked it up and turned the shard over in her hand. Dawn looked down at her thin bare legs exposed by the pajama shorts she was wearing. Slowly she took the piece of glass and made a deep cut on her upper thigh. She winced in pain and let out a deep breath.
