“I can totally explain this,” Angie said, “Just don’t freak out.”
“Okay.” Nolan said nervously, “I’m listening.”
Angie sat there and wracked her brain for an answer that made sense. She could feel herself blushing as she sat on Nolan’s only wearing a pillow.
“I sorta . . . go places.” She said
“Kinda figured that out for myself,” Nolan replied, “doesn’t explain why you’re not wearing anything.”
“Oh, that . . . ah . . . see.”
There was a loud bang on Nolan’s door.
“Nolan,” Peter said, “What’s going on?”
Nolan looked at Angie panicked.
“Oh god,” Nolan exclaimed, “It’s my dad.”
Nolan walked around the bed and took Angie by the arm. She looked at him strangely.
“What are you doing?” she asked
“If my dad see me with a naked girl he’s gonna wig!”
Nolan opened the closet. He dragged Angie to her feet which caused her to drop the pillow. Nolan stared at her body for a moment until he snapped himself back into really and ushered her inside.
“I’m really sorry about this.” he said before closing the door
Nolan jumped back onto his bed and picked up a discarded book which was lying on the floor just as Peter entered the room. He looked at his son suspiciously.
“What are you doing in here?” he asked
“Just reading Dad” Nolan replied
“I heard voices.”
“I was reading out loud.”
Peter stared at his son for a moment.
“Could you keep it down you’re sister and I are trying to sleep.”
Peter closed the door and Nolan listened as he walked back down the hallway. Once he was sure the coast was clear Nolan leaped out of bed and opened the closet door. Angie was buttoning up the last button on the shirt she borrowed.
“Coast is clear.” He said
Angie stepped out. Both Nolan and Angie stared at each other awkwardly for the longest moment.
“So you go places?” Nolan asked
Angie had had enough of this situation. She ran her hand through her hair.
“Can I just call my mom? I want to go home.” She replied
Belle swung out with a kick. It struck the pad square on.
“Good,” Rebecca said, “pick up the pace.”
Belle continued with her combat moves gradually increasing the speed. After a few attacks Rebecca motioned to stop. Belle relaxed her stance and breathed heavily. Nigel stood there in amazement.
“That was impressive,” he said, “I don’t think I’ve seen a slayer move that fast.”
“I’ve been itching to try this technique but never found the time.” Rebecca replied, “I actually talked to Aunt Buffy about it once and she said it might work. Glad it did.”
“Yeah I feel psyched,” Belle replied, “Let’s go again.”
“Oh no that’s enough for you for today. Don’t want to burn you out before patrol tonight.”
Belle shrugged lightly and wiped herself with a towel. She couldn’t help but notice something was missing. She looked around the room and saw Nolan sitting quietly. Belle watched him curiously. Normally Nolan and sitting quietly don’t gel to well unless something was happening. She walked over and sat in front of him.
“Hey Nolan.” she said lightly
No response.
“Nolan?”
Still no response. Belle waved her hand in front of his eyes
“Hello?”
“What I didn’t do anything?” he said defensively as he snapped out of his trance
“Geez what’s up with you this morning?”
“Nothing. Things are great.”
“Hey what was all that noise last night coming from your room?”
“I was reading to myself alone with nobody else with me and no naked people around.” he replied quickly
Belle looked at him curiously.
“Did you hit your head or something?”
“Nope. Everything’s fine,” Nolan replied, “Nothing weird is going on at all.”
Nolan felt a tap on his shoulder. He looked to see a sheepish looking Angie stood blushing behind him. Nolan started to shift awkwardly in his seat.
“Hi Nolan” She said nervously
“Ah, hey . . . Angie.” He replied
They stared at each other for a moment before Angie reached into her backpack. She pulled out Nolan’s shirt and handed it to him.
“Here you go,” she said, “I-I didn’t spill anything on it or anything.”
“Thanks,” Nolan remarked as he checked out the shirt, “hey, listen . . . “
He stopped when he noticed that Angie had left. Frowning he folded up his shirt and put it in his backpack. When he sat up again he noticed that Belle was staring at him strangely.
“What?” he asked her
“Why did the new girl have your shirt?” Belle asked in a deliberate tone
“She must have found it.”
“That’s your good shirt Nolan. The one you wear for formal things.”
“Yeah . . . Well, ah.”
Nolan stood up and bolted out of the room leaving Belle in a very suspicious mood.
Angie went outside to clear her head. This whole incident with last nights travel has left her rattled. She’d been feeling really strange ever since she stepped into the town but she just chalked it up to nerves but now it looked liked something more serious was going on. She was still feeling very drowsy. When Angie finally got home she was too anxious about seeing Nolan the next day she couldn’t get to sleep. She took a couple of deep breaths and shook herself loose. Finding a clear patch she started to practice some of her gymnastic moves.
Angie had been doing gymnastics ever since she was five and found that, in times of stress, focusing on her practice cleared her head. As she was going through her routine she didn’t notice that one of the senior girls was watching her. The girl, Lea Gray, was sitting with three of her close friends when she noticed Angie practicing. Excusing herself from her friends she wandered over and watched. When Angie had finished Lea clapped catching her by surprise.
“Not bad,” Lea said supportively
“Thanks,” Angie replied, “Didn’t know anybody was looking.”
“Don’t be embarrassed you got some good moves,” lea commented, “ever thought of cheerleading?”
Angie shrugged.
“I don’t know. I think you have to be pretty to be on the squad.”
“Trust me you’ll have a great chance,” Lea replied, “I’m Lea by the way head cheerleader.”
This caught Angie by surprise even more. Most head cheerleaders she’s met are arrogant and self centered Lea seemed nice.
“Hey.” Was all she could say as a reply
“Listen we’re holding tryouts why don’t you come?”
“Really? Are you sure?”
“Trust me I wouldn’t be offering this if I didn’t think you could do it.”
“Lea!” one of Lea’s friends called out from behind her
Lea looked behind her to see her friend holding her cell and looking very serious.
“Locker room!” The friend continued
“Right,” Lea replied as she turned back to Angie, “Think about it will you?”
“Alright.” Angie replied
Lea started to head back to the group.
“Tomorrow lunch time out on the field don’t be late.”
“I won’t.”
A smile crossed Angie’s face. Things we’re beginning to look up for her.
Heidi lay down on the table in the library. She panted heavily as sweat covered her brow. In the corner Rebecca and Nigel looked at her in concern.
“I’ve tried every technique I could find to help Heidi control her abilities,” Nigel explained, “Nothing has worked.”
“What do you think the problem is?” Rebecca asked
Nigel looked at the Divine One seriously.
“I don’t think Heidi is getting her ability from the Powers That Be.”
Rebecca looked at Nigel in concern.
“What makes you think that?”
“Every time we push against the power the power has pushed back. It’s as if there’s something inside of her feeding her this ability.”
“What do you think it is?”
Nigel looked back over to Heidi as she slowly climbed back up to her sitting position.
“I don’t know yet,” Nigel replied, “but there’s definitely more to Miss Marsh then what we’ve already seen.”
In math class Nolan said distracted. This wasn’t unusual for him but this time he was distracted because Angie was sitting in the next seat across. He kept glancing over to her as he tried to think of what to say. He scrunched up a piece of paper and threw it at her. Nolan looked at Angie awkwardly as the paper ball accidentally hit her in the face. Angie turned to look at him and was slightly annoyed.
“Sorry.” He whispered, “Hey can we meet for lunch? We should talk about what happened last night.”
Angie began to blush again. She quickly looked away from him and pretended to work.
“I-I don’t think that’s a good idea,” she replied meekly
“I just want to know . . .”
“Can we drop it?” Angie asked in a begging tone, “I just want to move on.”
“But we need to talk.”
“Mr. Galloway,” Mr. Henderson, the math teacher, asked in an official tone, “Is this something you want to share?”
“No Mr. Henderson.” Nolan replied
“Then I suggest you get back to your own work.”
Nolan quickly looked down at his own page. Angie closed her eyes and put her head on her folded arms. This couldn’t get any more embarrassing if it tried. The worry she carried about what happed with Nolan played on her mind. It didn’t help that she was extremely tired. While Nolan worked he heard the sound of a light thud. He looked over and noticed that Angie was gone. What worried him more is that, although she was gone, her clothes were still draped over the chair and desk. He looked around the room anxiously but there wasn’t any sign of her. Luckily nobody else noticed the sound. Carefully Nolan climbed out of his seat and quickly gathered up the dissuaded clothes and placed them in his bag. Where ever Angie was she was not in a good mood.
“Alright girls just because I got you out of class doesn’t mean we’re gonna be slacking off.” Lea announced to the rest of the cheerleaders as they walked down to the football field, “The game is on so were going to have to be ready to. . .”
The group stopped and just stared. In the center of the football field lay Angie completely naked. Lea looked at this scene in concern especially since the new girl seemed to be sound asleep. The other cheerleader began to laugh but Lea gave them a look which soon silenced them. She ran over and shook Angie lightly. Angie stirred slightly then opened her eyes. In sate of blind panic she sat bolt upright and looked at the cheerleaders. How did she get here? She looked down and go her answer. Covering herself with her hands she looked at the other cheerleader as they started to laugh at her again.
“Oh god, Oh god, Oh god,” She exclaimed
“Hey are you alright?” Lea asked
Angie looked up at the senior with a panicked expression. Instead of replying she quickly snatched the cheerleader’s pom-poms and use them as cover as she bolted back to the school building. This has never happed before not during the day at least. As Angie crept through the hallways hoping no one was looking she knew her highest priority was to find a phone and call her mom. All she has to do is get to the locker room so she can get her gym clothes.
“MISS COLLINS!” a voice yelled from behind her
Angie froze. She slowly turned to see Principal Crawford, arms folded, glaring at her in the way only principals can.
“My office now!” he continues
Time seemed to slow down as Angie waited those painful minutes for Principal Crawford. She hugged the pom-poms close to her as her skin stuck to the vinyl seats. Eventually he returned carrying her gym clothes. He was joined by that brown haired woman she saw in the library when Nolan gave her the tour. He handed her the clothes and she stood up to try and get dressed.
“Sit down Miss Collins,” Principal Crawford ordered, “you obviously wanted to be in that state so you’re going to have to remain like that for the moment.”
Angie quickly took her seat and looked at the principal in fear. Principal Crawford took his seat and stared at the naked girl.
“I’m extremely disappointed in you. When I read your permanent record you showed such promise. Now you had to ruin it with this display.”
“I-I didn’t want to . . .”
“Don’t give me that story,” Principal Crawford snapped, “You were lying in the middle of the football field where everybody could see you.”
Angie was about to replied but stopped. She didn’t know how to explain what happened to her and had the feeling he wouldn’t believe her anyway. She looked up at the woman leaning against the wall. She had a different expression on her face. It wasn’t anger or sorrow it was more intrigue. This worried Angie even more.
“This is Mrs. Whitfield our councilor. I want you to see her after school on a regular basis until we sought out the reason for your antisocial behavior. You may get dressed now”
Angie watched as Principal Crawford and the brown haired woman left the room. Outside Principal Crawford looked at Rebecca.
“What do you think Rebecca?” he asked
“Something’s not right.” Rebecca replied
“You’re telling me. A good student reduced to these tactics.”
“I mean with the situation,” Rebecca replied, “She’s not a troublemaker at least not intentionally.”
“She was out on the field Rebecca how do you explain that?”
“I can’t all I can tell you is what I sensed from her. She wasn’t scared because she got caught she was scared for a completely different reason.”
Inside Angie was beyond freaked. Forgetting her modesty she dropped the pom-poms and grabbed the phone. Tears welled in her eyes as she dialed her mother’s number
.
“Hello?” Veronica asked at the other end of the line
“Mom!” Angie said
“Honey? What’s wrong?”
“I-it happened again.”
“When?”
“Here, now, at school. I put my head on my desk for one minute and when I opened my eyes I was on the football field.”
“I’ll be right there Sweetie,” veronica said in an urgent tone, “Do you have something to put on?”
“Yeah.”
“Good, I’ll meet you at the front of the school. It’s okay we’ll get through this.”
“No I won’t Mom it’s not just happening sometimes,” Angie cried, “It’s happening all the time. Every time I go to sleep I wake up someplace else.”
