"All endings are also beginnings. We just don't know it at the time..."

At the time of Angel's death, he had hardened from the 'old', never-aging vampire. His dark hair, replaced by silvery white. Angel's once pale taunt skin, became hardened, and slacked. He had avoided the sun for about 40 years now, but he had brown sun spots due to his overexposure before hand. Angel's tattoo over the right shoulder was faded. Barely noticeable unless one cared to stare hard enough. His arthritis made it hard for him to continue exercise after years of being a fighter for the greater good, but he was fairly in shape. Long gone were the arms that could throw a demon across the room. He could barely pick up a small bag of groceries. He carried a cross in his coat everyday by habit. He had a scar over his eye from his last battle, making him look bad-tempered. And sometimes he was. Hundred of years lived, and seeing the things he did, you would be too.

His apartment where he 'lived' you can say, was barely livable. Yes, he had the necessities. A fridge with TV dinners. A bed. A TV. A couch. But most of all were the newspapers strewn about in his small apartment. He would read the newspaper every morning, looking for the unexplainable. After he would casually toss wherever. Aside the newspapers were weathered old books. These books he would occasionally look up the answers he couldn't solve from the newspaper. He only had one light and it was located by his bed, where he would, if his arthritis wasn't acting up, draw pictures. Pictures of everything from beaches to cemeteries. But most of all, of one person. The wallpaper was peeling from the old walls. Paint fading. The only two items up was a picture, and a cross. Probably because there was no other spaces. But who knows.

Angel worked as a manager for a shop that repaired cars. After reading the morning newspaper, he would walk to work. He walked past the same vendors and same people everyday. He knew them by not name, but whatever they sold. There was the Flower Lady, Fruit Guy, Jewelry Person etc. He would occasionally stop and chat with them. Talking small talk such as the weather or economy. When they talked of tragedies, such as the fire at the nearby school, or the rising number of the dead, he never told them the truth. That really it was a demon brain-washing the kids, and a slayer destroying it. And the school. Or that vampires were freely feeding ever since a slayer died a week ago saving kids from a brain-washing demon. No he never did, nor intended to. He never wanted to bring people into the world of darkness. There was one little girl who he knew.. Her name was Anne and she was only 5 years old. Every morning he walked by her, sitting on her stoop watching people walk by. And everyday they would talk for about 10 minutes.

It took him to get to work about 40 minutes. Once he got there he would inspect all the paperwork, making sure no one missed their shifts, and what they had done. He would walk around the garage making sure what they needed. More oil, more tires. Will also opened the shop and was always there with him. Other than Anne, Will was his only friend. Everyday Will in his mid-20's would talk about last nights sporting event's, what he had done the evening before, something. Hardly did they ever talked about Angel's life. Angel's job required a lot of paperwork and monitoring the workers. He guided and taught the newcomers. He was the first to come and the last to leave. Every night he closed at 10:05. And this is where the story begins.

disclaimer: the quote is Albom's from the five people you meet in heaven
AN: really short but I had to get the backstory out first. And I kind of have writer's block
