“What do you think is happening Giles? Why are Spike and I connected? I need to know.” Buffy said as she sat on Giles’ couch holding ice to her nose.
“I don’t know, Buffy. I’m trying to figure that out. It’s possible it has something to do with the box.” Giles said.
“What do you mean?” Buffy asked.
“What’s the one thing you two have in common with it?” Giles asked
“Let me think. Um, we both touched it.” Buffy said, saying the last two words slowly.
“Yes, but wait Angel and I both touched it and I’m not feeling anything strange or anything unlike myself.” Giles said.
“I know. Maybe you need to translate what’s on the box and then maybe that can help us out a bit.” Buffy said.
“She’s right.” A voice from the doorway said. It was Angel.
“Angel.” Giles said a little surprised.
“I’m sorry, but I was actually trying to look for writing that was similar to that on the box because I had recognized it the other night but I hadn’t been able to put a finger on it until now. It’s Celtic.” Angel said holding a book out to Giles so that Giles could translate the box. It took about twenty minutes before he was able to completely translate one side of it.
“I got.” Giles said and Buffy and Angel came over to hear what he had to say.
“It says, ‘If two people touch the box of the gods and one of them loves the other they will be connected for all of eternity’. Sorry Buffy I’m sure that isn’t what you wanted to hear.” Giles said looking to Buffy. He could see she was taking in what he had just said
“Your right about that. Does it say anything about draining a slayer?” Buffy asked desperately hoping that he could give her an answer.
“Nothing yet but I haven’t completely translate it.” Giles answered
“Alright, also see if there is anything about how to possibly get unconnected.” Buffy said and she went to go sit back down on the couch.
“Buffy, go home. I’ll let you know what I find tomorrow.” Giles said waking up Buffy, who had dozed on the couch.
“Ok. See you tomorrow Angel and Giles.” Buffy said as she got up sleepily and left.
“Giles, do you think that they will be able to be unconnected?” Angel asked once Buffy was gone.
“Yes and no. I did find one thing though before Buffy left. Something I didn’t want her to know tonight.” Giles said a little slowly while he cleaned his glasses nervously.
“What is it?” Angel asked
“Death, I’m afraid. This thing says that one of them has to die and the problem with Buffy and Spike’s situation is that Spike is already dead so I’m afraid that means that Buffy may have to die.” Giles said a bit quietly although Angel was able to hear him easily.
“There has got to be some other way. There must be some kind of spell or something that we could use.” Angel said
“I’ll see. Why don’t you go home, the sun will be coming up in about an hour or two.” Giles said and Angel left.
As Angel walked back to his place he spotted Spike walking ahead of him smoking a cigarette. Angel decided that he was going to tell Spike about what he and Giles had just learned.
“Spike, hold up. I have to talk to you.” Angel said as he ran to catch up with Spike, which of course surprised Spike a bit.
“What’s up?” Spike said finally
“Giles and I figured out how to break the connection with you and Buffy.” Angel said.
“What if I don’t want to break the connection with her. What if it’s better this way us being connected and all?” Spike said
“You want to be sick again because you know humans get sick and if you are connected you could get sick quite often.” Angel said knowing that that could possibly change his mind.
“Alright what is it?” Spike asked and that’s when Angel truly realized that he might lose Buffy and that Spike might just say that he would rather stay connected.
“I’m afraid that Buffy may have to be killed. This box we found out says that if at least one of the two people who touch it then both will be connected. In order to disconnect one must die and they have to be alive in the first place and I’m afraid that disqualifies you and leaves Buffy.” Angel said
“That can’t be right. You must have missed something. What would happen if I was staked and she didn’t have to die?” Spike said not willing to accept what he had just heard.
“Well, I think if you died that Buffy would go through everything that has happened to you since the day you were born and I’m not just talking about after Dru turned you. She would go through it till the day she died. Do you really want that for her.” Angel said a bit angrily.
“Well it wasn’t my first choice, I mean I wasn’t the coolest guy in town growing up, meaning I got picked on in my schooldays both by the other boys and the schoolmaster and I’m sure you heard about my mum and about Cicily from Dru there’s also all the stuff that I did before I got this chip in my head and I guess your right I don’t want her to go through with all that it would drive her insane.” Spike said
“Giles checked it. When I left him about half -n- hour ago I told him to see if he can find some other way. He should be working on it right about now. Knowing Giles he should find something.” Angel said a little more gently realizing that Buffy could feel all Spike’s emotions and Angel didn’t want Buffy to be angry or have some kind of negative emotion and not know exactly why she was feeling it.
“Good. Well when he gets this figured out let me know. You know where I’ll be or maybe you won’t oh never mind. Good-bye. I think it’s time for a little shuteye and hey I just made a rhyme been awhile since I did that. Shutting up now, right now.” Spike said and with that he walked to his crypt and Angel also turned to leave.
