Episode 2: Civilized Man

A/N: I added another scene to episode one. It’s not integral or anything but I think it’s worth reading.
*******************

AIRPLANE – DAY

“I get really nervous on airplanes,” a man tells the man beside him, “Lately after everything that’s happened. Does that happen to you?”

“No,” the other man replies, seeming not to care with this guy has to say.

“Sir is there anything I can get you?” the flight attendant asks them.

“No thank you, I’m just going to go to the bathroom,” the man, who had said no, replies, says getting up and making his way toward the back of the plan.

He reaches the back and walks over to the emergency door and grabs the lever that opens it.

“What are you doing?!” a male passenger yells when he sees the guy.

The guy looks at him, his eyes flashing a dark black before he opens the door and jumps out. The passengers start screaming as the air from outside rushes in and the pressure in the cabin changes. The wind howls as the plane begins to make and down wards descent. It’s going to crash.

BUFFY’S APARTMENT – DAY

Buffy is sitting on her couch watching the news. It was the only the channel that came in in English.

“There are no survivors but it is speculated that the crash was caused by a passenger,” the news reporter says, “This crash is just one of the many recent crashes, all of which have occurred at about 12 in the afternoon. Mere coincidence or not? You be the judge. This is Doris….”

*Oh great* Buffy thought *Giles leaves today. I hope he’s okay*

A SMALL PUEBLO (TOWN) SOMEWHERE IN SOUTH AMERICA - DAY

“What do you mean you can't speak Spanish?!” Willow yells at Kennedy as the bus pulls away, leaving Kennedy and Willow in a small market street. Two South American men are sitting there watching them, curiously.

“I thought you spoke it!”

“No, I took French in high school besides you’re the one who’s of Spanish descent!”

“What?!” Kennedy yells back.

“¿Qué injusticia con esas chicas?” (What’s wrong with those girls?) the one guy says to his friend, indicating Willow and Kennedy, who were yelling at each other in the middle of the street.

“Yo no sé. Pienso que ellos están locos,” “I don’t know. I think they’re crazy.) the other guy says with a shrug.

“Ay carumba, ellos vienen esta manera. ¡Corra!” (Oh no, they’re coming this way. Run!) the other man says to his friend, when Willow and Kennedy begin to make there way over to ask for help. They two men run off.

“Well, that was rude,” Willow says when she sees the pair run off, “I was just going to ask if they understand English.”

“Come on, let’s go find a place that sells Spanish for Dummies or something,” Kennedy says, taking Willow’s hand and pulling her towards the hustle and bustle of the market.

INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT – ROME, ITALY - DAY

“Giles, are you sure about this?” Buffy asks Giles. She, Andrew and Dawn are saying there goodbyes before he leaves for England.

“Yeah there’ve been all those,” Andrew looks at Dawn before he continues, “C – R – A – S – H - E – S on the news.”

“Okay, you know I’m not five and can actually spell right?” Dawn asks, “And what crashes?”

“Two recent plane crashes,” Buffy tells her sister.

“I doubt 2 crashes calls for such worry….” Giles begins.

“Yeah but they both happened at exactly 12 noon, isn’t that the lease bit suspicious?” Buffy asks.

“Its still only 2. Two dots make a line, not a pattern,” he tells her.

“Huh?” Buffy says.

“It’s probably a coincidence,” he clarifies.

“I guess you’re right. Just be careful,” Buffy says.

“I’m perfectly capable of taking care of myself,” he reminds her.

“Oh here we got you a gift,” Dawn says, pulling out a glasses case, “They’re prescription sun glasses, so you can be all cool and in style.”

Giles smiles at her and gives her a hug, “Take care of yourself.”

“I will,” she says, letting go and allowing Buffy to hug him.

“Well, I suppose this is goodbye,” Giles says.

“Don’t go!” Andrew yells, very dramatically, hugging Giles tightly.

“Andrew!” Buffy says, grabbing the nerd and dislodging him from Giles’s body.

“Goodbye,” Giles says, entering the part of the airport for people with tickets only.

“I’m gonna miss him,” Andrew says.

Buffy smiles, “Me too.”

“Don’t worry he’ll be back soon and he’ll have a whole bunch of potentials waiting to come to our newly built slayer training school,” Dawn says.

“Well, it’s not built yet,” Buffy says.

“Yeah but soon,” Dawn agrees as the trio begins to make their way back to the car.

“It’s gonna be so cool. Just like Professor Xavier’s School for the Gifted,” Andrew says.

“I hear words coming out of your mouth but none of make any sense,” Dawn says.

“X-Men, duh?” he replies, “Hey can we get a jet?”

“No!” Buffy says.

“Oh come on, please,” Andrew whines.

********************

Giles hands the flight attendant his ticket. She looks at it and as she is handing it back to him another man getting on the plane walks into Giles, pushing him into the lady and causing all 3 to touch.

Giles can faintly hear the man says excuse me as he is hit with a flash of visions.

*********************
GILES’S VISIONS

Everything is quick and blurry.

He can see a plane people are screaming.

A flight attendant is talking to the whoever’s eyes he is seeing through, “Sir is there anything I can get you?” she asks.

He is walking up the aisle; he glances down at a man’s watch and notices the time reads 12 noon. He walks over to the emergency door and opens it jumping out, which is when he is jolted out of the visions.

**********************

“Sir, are you okay?” the flight attendant asks him. The man is gone.

“Yes, I’m fine. That man?”

“I know that was very rude,” she replies.

“No, where is he?”

“Umm, he got on the plane sir,” she replies, her brow furring slightly, unsure of why he cared, “are you sure you’re alright?”

“Yes, quite,” he replies, boarding the plane with the other passengers.

*********************

BUFFY & DAWN’S CAR

“I’m sure Giles will be fine,” Dawn tells Buffy, who is looking out the window of their car. Dawn is driving.

“Dawn, watch the road,” Buffy’s says.

“I am, geez.”

“Sorry, I’m just a little worried about. Something about that plane, those crashes, got spidie senses tingling.”

“I’m sure he’ll be fine,” Dawn reassures her.

“Yeah you’re right; he’ll probably read one of his musty old books the whole time,” Buffy says with a nod.

“Hey, where’s Xander?” Andrew says, leaning into the front of the car.

“Yeah, where is Xander, Buffy?” Dawn asks.

Buffy shrugs, “I don’t know he said he had to take care of something.”

XANDER’S HOTEL ROOM – DAY

Xander is sitting on the couch, drinking a bottle of beer. A few more empty bottles are on the table and floor as well as a case of unopened ones. He looks sad and miserable.

**********************

AIRPLANE – DAY

Giles is on his way to the bathroom, when he notices the man who bumped into him earlier. A young boy is crying as his mother holds him over her shoulder, patting his back and trying comfort him. They are sitting directly in front of the man and the boy is staring at him with a looks of fear in his eyes.

“Sweetie what’s wrong?” his mother coos.

“Monster,” the little bots says. At this point he is practically shaking as he points at the man. The woman turns around and sees where he is pointing.

“Tommy, that’s just a nice man,” she says and then turns to the man, “I’m sorry. I don’t know what’s gotten into him.”

Giles makes his way back to his seat. *What’s gotten into him; perhaps it’s what’s gotten into that man. It’s just a child, Rupert, don’t be silly but then again children often have the ability to see things adults can’t.*

Giles sighs as he takes his bag out of the overhead compartment and takes a book out. He flips it open. The page’s heading reads How to Know If Someone is Possessed. His finger runs over the ingredients and as discreetly as he can he takes them out of his bag and places them in his pocket. He then heads to the bathroom.

*********************

PLANE’S BATHROOM – DAY

Giles is inside the cramped airplane restroom, mixing together various ingredients in a small bottle. He watches as the concoction fizzes and changes from red to clear.

“If he is in anyway demonic this should turn green,” Giles says, “Now all have to do is somehow pour discreetly on him and make it looks like an accident.”

Giles opens the bathroom door and begins to make his way down the aisle, when he nears the man he pretends to be bumped by a passing passenger and spills the liquid onto the man’s arm. It turns bright green.

“What the hell is wrong with you?!” the man yells.

“I’m terribly sorry,” Giles says, making his way back to his seat and avoiding a confrontation.

Giles sits down and opens his book again this time the page’s heading reads The Art of Exorcism.

“What are you reading?” the portly woman next to Giles asks in a flirtatious manner.

“Its private,” Giles says very politely.

“Well aren’t you mysterious. Not to mention tall, dark, and handsome and the accent oo I could listen to you talk all day,” she says.

“That’s very flattering….”

“Why don’t we go to the back and have some fun,” she says with a mischievous glint in her eye.

“It’s a very tempting offer but I’m quite busy at the moment.”

“Your loss,” she says and with that she turns and begins to talk to the man next to her.

A little while later Giles notices the demonically possessed man get up and he places a cross and a bottle of holy water of holy water in his jacket, he grabs the book he has been studying, and gets up to follow the man.

*******************

IN THE BACK OF THE PLANE – DAY

“I know what you are and what you’re planning to do,” Giles tells the man, who turns around.

“It’s you,” he says.

Giles takes his cross out and holds it towards the man. The man looks at him and punches him, when Giles moves forwards. Giles massages his jaw and tackles the man to the floor. He doses him with holy water and begins to recite an incantation from his book.

“What are you doing?” the guy says.

“Don’t be afraid you’re possessed but I’ll help you.”

“What?!”

And that’s when something hits Giles in the head knocking him unconscious, before he falls under he looks at his watch its only reads 11:00 P. M.

*******************

INSIDE CLOSET IN PLANE – TIME UNKNOWN AT MOMENT

“You okay,” the man asks Giles who is just regaining consciousness.

“You!” Giles exclaims backing away from the man, “You’re a demon!”

“Yeah but I was born that way I’m not possessed or whatever.”

“What happened?”

“That flight attendant, the one who collected or tickets hit you over the head and looked us in her. So as for who’s possessed my money’s on the chick. She was way too strong for a human. I’m Gary by the way,” he says, extending his hand.

Giles takes it and shakes it, “Rupert Giles….What time is it?”

“You’re the one with the watch.”

Giles looks down, “We don’t have much time.”

“Much time for what? What’s going on?”

“That demon that possessed that woman is going to crash this plane at 12 noon.”

“How do you know?”

“I just do.”

“What are you a freakin oracle?”

“I’d explain but we don’t have time. Are you going to help me or not?”

Gary shrugs, “Yeah, I have this urge not to die.”

“Glad to hear it,” Giles says, finding something to pick the closet’s lock with.

*****************

Giles and Gary quietly slip out of the closet.

“Now what?” Gary asks.

“We have to get her back here,” Giles says, “We should do it without bringing….”

“Hey tootsie, can I have a word,” Gary yells down at the stewardess, who turns around anger in her eyes.

“I was about to say we should do it without bringing any attention to ourselves.”

“Sorry,” Gary says as she walks into the back.

Gary grabs her and pins her to the floor as Giles closes the curtain so none of the passengers see what’s going on. She kicks Gary off, sending him flying out into the aisle. All the passengers turn and look at him. He smiles sheepishly and re enters the back only to find the demon holding Giles’s by his throat. Gary hits her over the head with part of a drink cart and she falls to the floor slightly stunned. Gary pins her to the ground tightly as Giles pours holy water over her head and begins to recite the incantation. She begins to scream. They watch as a black cloud comes out of her mouth. Giles continues to say the incantation, more quickly.

“Open the box,” Giles commands, indicating the small box he had taken out of his pocket. Gary does and the back cloud is sucked inside. Gary quickly slams the lid shut.

“You okay?” Gary asks, panting, slightly as he gets up and offers Giles a hand.

“Peachy,” Giles says, sarcastically as he takes Gary’s hand and gets up from the floor. He sounds out of breath.

“You’re okay….for a human.”

“Thank you,” Giles says sarcasm still in his voice.

“Will someone please tell me what’s going on?” the flight attendant asks. The pair look at her and share a knowing smile.

AIRPORT – ENGLAND – DAY

Song Plays as Giles walks out of the airport and into the sun. He puts on the sunglasses Dawn gave him.
