“Are you ok? You were down there a pretty long time.” Boothe said when she came upstairs and into the living room.

“Yeah, I’m fine. My friend was down there and we were talking.” Buffy said as she came to sit in the other armchair.

“Why is he in the basement?” Brennan asked. She had had her eyes close when Buffy came in.

“He kinda lives down there. He likes it.” Buffy said although she was sure he’d rather be up in the actual house where everybody else was, but she wasn’t sure about that.

“Sorry but your friend is weird.” Boothe said.

“That’s ok I know he is. He’s a good friend though.” Buffy said smiling.

“He seems like one. So what was up with him and running? Was he afraid or something?” Boothe asked and Buffy couldn’t read his face but could tell that Brennan could by the look she was giving him.

“He wasn’t afraid just had to um well he had to get going somewhere real fast.” Buffy lied but she also sounded defensive.

“I don’t see why people are afraid of skeletons. They are in all of our bodies, once they are out they are nothing really other than something that can sometimes tell a story.” Brennan said looking mainly at Boothe.

“Bones, people don’t like to see the bones on the outside of bodies all the time.” Boothe said smiling. The phone suddenly rang.

“Hello?” Buffy said as she answered it.
“Calm down, Dawn. Just tell me what happened and slowly.” Buffy said and she could feel Boothe and Brennan both staring at her.
“Are you sure she was completely drained and that she’s dead?” Buffy asked and the moment she asked it the person was dead Boothe was up and had his gun holstered.
“I’m coming over. Love you and stay safe I don’t want you going after this thing yourself.” Buffy said caringly.

“What’s wrong?” Boothe asked the moment she was off the phone.

“Um my sister’s friend’s dog is dead and they um want me to come over.” Buffy lied.

“Why did you tell her to stay safe then?” Boothe questioned.

“Well it died because a rabid raccoon killed it.” Buffy said unsure if he would believe her.

“Must have been a small dog.” Boothe said.

“It was.” Buffy said

“I’m going to go get my friend and we’re going to go.” Buffy said as she started to leave the living room.

“You want me to come with you?” Boothe asked.

“No we’ll be fine.” Buffy said and she headed towards the basement.

“Spike, I need you to wake up. Dawn is in trouble.” Buffy said and Spike shot up the moment Buffy said Dawn was in trouble.

“What’s wrong?” Spike asked a little groggily.

“Apparently Dawn was with more than one friend but her other friend was killed by a vampire. It drained her completely.” Buffy said a little fast.

“What do you need me for, luv? You can kill vampires on your own.” Spike asked looking quizzical.

“I need you because Dawn is really freaked and it would help her if you were there.” Buffy explained.

“Right then well let’s get going then.” Spike said as he got up off the cot and they headed upstairs.

“We’ll be right back.” Buffy said to Boothe and Brennan and then her and Spike went out the door.

“Will you hurry up, Spike?” Buffy said a little agitated. She was running as fast as she could and for some reason Spike was having a real hard time keeping up.

“I’m trying but I think you’ve gotten faster since the cemetery.” Spike said as he caught up with her panting hard. It was almost as if he was trying to catch his breath.

“Are you alright, Spike?” Buffy asked concerned.

“Yeah, I’m fine.” He said trying to reassure her.

“You know she’ll be fine right?” Buffy asked.

“Yeah I know. Now come on we need to get there.” Spike said and before Buffy could say anything he was off running. ‘He shouldn’t be breathing that hard from just running and he should be keeping up with me if not ahead of me.’ Buffy thought to herself as she started to run again.

“Oh, Buffy.” Dawn said as she ran over to her sister crying.

“It’ll be alright, Dawnie.” Buffy said as she held her sister.

“She’s dead. I tried I really did but it was to strong and I was afraid. I let her down.” Dawn sobbed.

“It’s alright, Nibblet. You tried, and I know that if I was her I’d be at least a little grateful that someone tried to save me.” Spike said trying to make her feel better.

“Thank you, Spike.” Dawn said and she then went to hug him.

“Dawnie, is it still around, did you see where it went?” Buffy asked stake in hand.

“It went that way.” Dawn said as she pointed towards the woods.

“Stay with her while I go after it, Spike.” Buffy said and she was off.

“You’re warm.” Dawn observed as Spike held her.

“It’s the night air.” Spike lied as he watched to woods for any sign of trouble.

“The night air is cold.” Dawn pointed out.

“It’s nothing now be quiet and try to get some rest. You need it.” Spike said and then kissed her forehead softly. Dawn closed her eyes as she was told but she didn’t fall asleep. Buffy came back about ten minutes later and Spike saw she was caring someone.

“I found the vampire and it’s dust now. Janice, here was unconscious and it looked as if the vampire was taking her back to it’s home to feed.” Buffy said as she laid Janice down on the ground.

“We should get her back and then get Dawn home.” Spike said as he stood up with Dawn in his arms.

“Yeah. Is she asleep?” Buffy asked looking caringly at Dawn.

“No, I’m awake, just happy where I am.” Dawn answered.

“Let’s get going then.” Buffy said and that was that they were off to drop Janice at her house and get Dawn home.
