~ The Mathews household – three nights ago ~
Mr. Mathews was sitting quietly on the sofa when there was a knock at the door. Curiously he stood up and answered it. Meredith smiled at him sweetly on the other side.
“Can I help you?” he asked
“Yeah I’m new in town and I’m looking for a place to stay.”
“There’s a motel down the road,” Mr. Mathews replied, “perhaps you should talk to your parents about it.”
Meredith looked past him into the house.
“Actually I was thinking of staying here.” She replied as she slipped off her jacket
“I’m sorry we don’t let strangers into the . . .”
Mr. Mathews stopped when he saw Meredith lift up her t-shirt and remove it.
“. . . What do you think your doing?”
“Getting comfortable.” Meredith replied as her eyes shifted to black.
From her back six long legs sprouted as she snarled and hissed at Mr. Mathews. The man stumbled back in shock but before he could move another step one of the legs skewers him through the chest. Mr. Mathews tried to fight against the demons strength but it was no use his life slipped away as Meredith stepped into the house. Mrs. Mathews stepped out of the kitchen.
“Honey who was at the door?” she asked
Mrs. Mathews looked up and screamed as she saw Meredith standing in the living room with her husband nagging off one of the legs attached to her back. Meredith looked over and hissed at Mrs. Mathews. She tried to run but the demon tripped her up and dispatched her the same way she did her husband. Tiredly Sam Mathews walked down the hall.
“God, what is all the noise? I’m trying to study” the teenager complained
One look at Meredith answered that question immediately but, unlike her parents, she didn’t have time to react before the demon killed her.
Later on that afternoon Belle and the other were in the library. Belle was continuing her slayer training while Nolan was doing the very important sitting and staring. Suddenly Belle stopped.
“What’s wrong?” Rebecca asked
“I can’t do this with him staring at Me.” belle replied pointing to Nolan
“Hey, I’m supervising it’s a very crucial roll!” Nolan replied, “What if you hurt yourself who’s gonna stand round and laugh at you?”
After that comment Nolan received a double look from both Rebecca and Belle. Nolan rolled his eyes.
“Okay if anybody needs me I’ll be studying in the corner.” Nolan continued dejectedly
From the sidelines Heidi watched Nolan with interest. Nigel had gone to his office to arrange some more tests for her leaving her ample time to observe him. She smiled to herself as she watched Nolan walk over to a different table in the room. For some reason Nolan gave her butterflies which she didn’t mind. Just then the library door opened and Meredith walked in. unbeknownst to everyone else when Heidi saw Meredith she s stood up from her seat and hid behind one of the stacks. She peered out and watched Meredith curiously
“Hey.” Meredith said as she sat down on Nolan’s table
Nolan looked up and smiled.
“Oh hi,” he replied, “Thought I wasn’t gonna see you until later.”
“Yeah there’s been a change of plans,” Meredith replied, “I can’t come out with you tonight.”
Nolan tried to hide the look of disappointment on his face.
“Oh,” he replied, “alright maybe some other . . .”
“. . . So I was thinking that you can come over to my place tonight.”
Nolan didn’t bother to try and hide his excitement. Meredith wrote down the address and handed it to him with a coy smile. In return Nolan grinned at her like a five year old who just got candy. Heidi frowned anxiously as she watched Meredith leave the room. She already knew what was going to happen and she had no choice but to try and stop it. Nolan smiled at the note. He turned back to do some studying only to find Belle, arms folded, staring at him curiously.
“What?” he asked
“Are you going to tell me who she is?” Belle asked
“Just some new girl.”
“Right,” Belle replied, “just some new girl who wrote ‘can’t wait for tonight’ and left three kiss marks.”
“Why do you do this to me Belle?”
“I’m your older sister. It’s my job to pry into your personal life as much as I can.”
“She’s just some girl alright?”
“Yeah, you keep telling yourself that?”
Rebecca smiled at them. She was an only child but she remembered the arguments her Mom and Aunt Buffy got into. Out of the corner of her eye she noticed that Heidi was hiding behind one of the book stacks. The last time she did that something terrible was about to happen. This was something that she had to bring up.
Nigel sat in his office. He was finalizing the exercises he was going to work Heidi on when his phone rang. Nigel picked up the receiver.
“Hello?”
“Nigel?” said a gruff voice down the other end of the line, “Roger Stone here.”
Nigel stopped what he was doing and sat up attentively. It’s not often the head of the new council rings and he tries to pay as close attention as possible.
“Hello sir,” Nigel replied
“I want an update on the slayers progress.”
Nigel picked up his notebook and consulted it.
“Belles doing remarkably well,” Nigel explained, “her combat proficiency is high and she has picked up the theory incredibly quickly.”
“That’s good to hear. What of the Divine One?”
“At the moment she is aiding me with combat training. Her experience in the field is invaluable to the slayer.”
“So she’s agreed then?”
Nigel paused. He knew this question was coming in fact he suspected it the reason Roger called.
“no.” Nigel replied
“What do you mean no?” Roger asked a hint of anger in his voice, “you did tell her our arrangement?”
“Not as such.” Nigel replied
“Mr. Wincroft you assured me that you could get the Divine One re-recruited if we found the Goddess Willow.”
“And I will but there have been complications.”
“Yes we know about the virus.”
“Then you understand my position sir?”
“No, quite frankly, is she still able to stand?”
“Yes.”
“Then I suggest we put her into service before she is of no more use to our cause.”
Nigel paused for the moment. A streak of anger crossed him.
“Can I speak candidly sir?” he asked
“Of course.” Roger replied
“You knew that Goddess Willow would not respond positively to the message didn’t you?”
“Of course I did Wincroft why do you think I made the arrangement,” Roger replied annoyed, “This is the calm before the storm the demons are beginning to resurface and being back down to one slayer means that we have use as many warriors we can find.”
“What about the efforts to locate the other Generation S slayers?”
“That will still be continuing. In fact one of our strongest leads is coming from Phoenix Arizona which we will be following up shortly but in the mean time we need every soldier on the front line.”
“Yes, you’re right sir.”
“Are you able to do this Nigel or do I need to replace you?”
“That won’t be necessary.” Nigel replied
He hung up the phone and stared at it thoughtfully. There are some days where he thinks that Roger takes his authority too far.
That night Rebecca and Belle walked through the graveyard. It is still early days and both Nigel and Rebecca agreed that she needs to be supervised until she becomes more confident with her abilities. While they were looking for vampires Belle noticed that Rebecca had been oddly quite the entire trip over.
“Something up?” Belle asked the Divine One
“Huh?” Rebecca asked
“You’ve just been kinda out of it the whole trip over.”
“Sorry, got a lot on my mind.”
“That why you’re mad at Nige?”
Rebecca dropped her head and sighed.
“No,” she replied softly, “It’s not his fault.”
“What’s the deal then?”
“A lot of personal stuff as comes up recently. Stuff from the past.”
“Is it bad?”
“Yeah.”
The two of them continue walking silently. One question keeps playing on Belles mind.
“Hey Rebecca,” she asked carefully, “you never really answered my question before. Why aren’t you fighting like I have to?”
Rebecca rubbed her forehead. She would love to sit down one day and go through her life story with belle but at the moment she doesn’t want to scare the recently activated slayer.
“There’s a lot of reasons.” Rebecca replied
“But you have all those cool powers, I mean; you’d be great at it.”
“Thanks for the vote of confidence but it’s not my job.”
Just then they saw a hand clawing its way out of the ground. Belle pulled out a stake from her jacket pocket and readied herself
“Remember what I told you,” Rebecca instructed, “stay on your tows and keep watching your blind spots.”
“Got it.” Belle replied
The vamp got to its feet and sniffed the air. He looked over to the two women and bared his fangs. Belle charged in and started to lay down some punches. From the sidelines Rebecca watched. Although she should be focusing on Belle her mind keeps wandering back to the virus and the Trinity Seal. From her pocket she pulled out her cell phone and pressed on of the speed dial numbers.
~ The Hyperion Hotel, Los Angeles, California ~
The Phone rang on the check in counter of the hotel. Gunn looked over to Angel and Connor who were cleaning their weapons after a very messy battle wit a hoard of slim demons.
“Don’t all of you up at once,” Gunn said as he went for the phone and picked up the receiver. “Angel investigations, we help the helpless.”
“Hey Gunn it’s me.” Rebecca said
Gunn smiled
“Beck, How you bin girl?” he replied cheerfully, “how’s school?”
“Good. Things are going great.”
“Bet you’re dealin’ with a whole lot of hell raisers aren’t ya?”
Rebecca looked over to Belle who was winning the fight with the vamp
“You don’t know that half of it,” she replied, “is Angel in?”
“Yeah I’ll get him for ya,” Gunn replied before he put down the receiver, “Angel its Rebecca.”
Angel got up from his cleaning position and moved over to the phone.
“Hi Rebecca long time no hear,” He said calmly, “How’s Alex?”
“Good, Alex is . . . good.”
Angel frowned. There was something in her tone that he didn’t like.
“How are things with you?” he asked
Rebecca hesitated. She kept her eye on Belle but her mind was racing.
“Things are . . . “Rebecca attempted
“What’s wrong Rebecca?”
“Nothing,” Rebecca lied, “nothings wrong I-I just needed to hear a friendly voice.”
“Rebecca . . .”
“I’m fine Angel, really, everything’s okay.”
“You and I both know that you’re not telling the truth. What’s happening?”
Rebecca dropped her head. There was too much to say too soon. She didn’t know how to begin. Angel began to worry. He’s known Rebecca long enough to know when she was in danger no matter what the size. There was only one explanation
“Who’s after you?” Angel asked seriously
Rebecca hung up quickly. She took a couple of deep breaths to hold back the emotions that were swelling. She never planned on cutting him off so quickly she just wasn’t ready to tell anybody. Back at the Hyperion angel slowly hung up the phone. He rubbed his top lip thoughtfully as he tried to dissect the entire conversation he had with her.
“What was that about?” Gunn asked
“I don’t know,” Angel replied, “did she seem worried to you?”
“Yeah,” Gunn replied, “Rebecca sounded spooked when I answered. And, Rebecca and spooked, don’t mix well together.”
“Maybe I’m getting paranoid but it almost sounded like she wanted to tell me something but didn’t.”
“That doesn’t sound like her.” Gunn replied
Angel picked up the receiver again.
“I’m going to call Alex see if he has any idea what’s going on?”
Nolan walked up to the front door of the house. He knocked on it nervously and waited. Nolan had to double check the address because he thought the Mathews lived in that house. He told himself that maybe they moved away since nobody has heard from them in three days. The sound of the door being unlocked snapped Nolan back to Reality. Meredith opened the door only wearing a towel. Nolan looked at her nervously.
“Oh my god,” Meredith exclaimed, “you’re early.”
“I can, ah, come back if you need more time.”
“No, it’s cool, come in.”
Meredith stood aside and let Nolan in. he looked around the house with interest. He’d only seen inside the house once when he was selling raffle tickets but he swears that he’s seen the exact same furniture in their house. Nolan looked back at Meredith who stood self-consciously.
“Do you want a drink or something?”
“No I’m good.” he replied
Meredith nodded. She looked down at herself frowning.
“I think I better put something on.”
Nolan shrugged.
“If you want to”
Meredith wandered down the hall as she did so she smiled evilly to herself.
“Where are your folks?” Nolan yelled down the hall
“They went out to dinner with some friend,” Meredith replied, “So we have the house to ourselves for most of the night.”
Nolan grinned mischievously. This kind of situation doesn’t come along too often and he wanted to make the most of it. Meredith returned a few minutes later dressed in what she wore to school.
“So,” Nolan asked, “what do you want to . . ?”
His sentence was cut off by Meredith walking up, putting her hands on the back of his neck, and kissing him passionately. They wander over to the sofa where she forces him down. A moment later she stops.
“I like how you think.” Nolan replied before she continues to kiss him again.
“You did great tonight,” Rebecca commented as they wandered out of the graveyard.
“I was kina nervous when that other vamp tried to jump me from behind but I did what you said and kept checking my blind spots.” Belle replied excitedly
A moment later Belle tripped on something. She looked down and, to her horror, discovered it was an arm. Her screams attracted Rebecca’s attention and the Divine One rushed back to investigate. The scene was gruesome. The corpse was a young male with the top of his head missing and his brains scooped out. After calming Belle down she investigated closer.
“What could have done that?” Belle asked frantically
“What ever it was it was huge,” Rebecca commented, “looks like the top of his head was bitten off.”
“Bitten off? What the hell was it?”
Rebecca examined the body closer. There was something protruding out of the mans chest. Gripping the end tightly she pulled it out and examined it closely.
“This looks like some kind of spider leg.” Rebecca commented
“No way,” belle replied, “There is no way a spider could be that big.”
“Hate to tell you Belle but there are,” Rebecca replied climbing back onto her feet, “looks like we’re dealing with a demon spider. we have to find it before it hurts anybody else.”
