Regroup

The White Room – a single creature. All we see is his back. Tall, good build, smartly dressed, African-American, very short hair. The new liaison. He turns every which way, looking around, revealing his face, Charles Gunn.

GUNN: Hello, anyone there? Anyone here? Um, thinking heaven would be a little more crowded than this. (under his breath) Well, maybe I’m not in heaven. (louder – trying to get someone’s attention), but I’ve been to hell, and this ain’t it. This, well, this kinda looks like (turning around faster now – looking for some sign, some clue). Damn, this looks like the White Room. Can’t be though, Wolfram & Hart went up in a big puff of boom. Come to think of it, so did half of downtown, uh, so did I.

He stops – seeing a hawk flying in and landing on a white perch. The hawk looks at him, tilts its head and gives a cry.

GUNN: Ok, I’m here, where here is, I don’t believe, but if you say so. Wait, I just understood what you said. No, not happening, not to me. This is crazy.

The hawk cries again, spreading its wings.

GUNN: No, I am not the new liaison. For one, Wolfram & Hart, LA do not exist anymore, at least not in this dimension. I seem to remember very clearly being caught up in an explosion that killed your army and took out the offices as well. Yeah, explain that one. Also, I’m dead. I’m supposed to be, well, I was hoping to be with Baby Jesus. But I don’t accept being here with you.

The hawk hops on its perch, a piercing scream coming from its open beak. The wings flap again.

GUNN: Standard perpetuity clause. (shaking his head) Alright, I’ll grant you that, but I’m NOT and NEVER will be your liaison. That was not in my contract. I’ve read my contract, I have. And there was nothing… (the hawk cries). Oh, the memory enhancement agreement. Section 2b, paragraph 6. Liaison in waiting. (hangs his head) No, can’t be, you can’t make me. I refuse. I did not die fighting the good fight to be brought back by you to, to go against everything I believe in, everything I worked for, we worked for. Angel… and Wes… and Fred. Cordy too, oh no, I will not be party to this. You ain’t gonna use Charles Gunn no more.

The hawk cries and flies off its perch. Gunn stands straight.

Healing

Wesley’s apartment. The walls are cracked, dust is everywhere, but the place is intact.

SPIKE: All right Blue, here’s your healing power. Let’s make you well.

ILLYRIA: Wesley was much better than you in tending to me. (cocks her head) I want you to learn from him.

SPIKE: What are you yammerin on about. Can’t learn anything from a dead man, well except maybe how not to be dead. But then again, I’m dead and plenty of people have learned a thing or two from me. Take this Thoraxis demon I met in Egypt, he had the biggest…

ILLYRIA: I am not interested in the folly of your life. I would like Wesley to take care of me.

ANGEL: Illyria, Wes is dead. You said so yourself. He was human, he died, there’s no coming back from that, at least not for him.

ILLYRIA: Then tell me, who is that in the corner?

Heads whip around to the corner of the room where they see… Nothing. Except Illyria, who sees Wesley standing there, arms crossed, with a concerned look on his face.

WESLEY: Illyria, tell Spike to spread more of the paste on your wound. He doesn’t have to be so stingy with it. You can make more.

ILLYRIA: Wesley, why are you not helping me?

SPIKE: (addressing Angel) As the little misses gone soft? Are we going to have a psychotic ex-God on our hands, because if that’s what’s going on here, I quit. I’ve had my share of bloody loonies.

ANGEL: I don’t think that’s it. Illyria, do you see Wesley?

ILLYRIA: Why do you ask questions for which you know the answer to? He is speaking to us.

WESLEY: No, actually Illyria, I am only speaking to you. Angel and Spike cannot see me. Spike spoke the truth, I am dead, my soul is no longer on this plane.

ILLYRIA: Then why are you before me?

WESLEY: I’m not sure of the why, but I believe it is because you are an Old One that you can see and hear me. Illyria, you haven’t got much time. The Senior Partners are regrouping, they are gathering their forces again. You must leave this place. Tell Angel and Spike – you must get out now.

ILLYRIA: Wesley says we must go. The Senior Partners will find us, even now they are raising another army.

SPIKE: Bloody hell, why can’t they just lie down and die.

ANGEL: Not like them. Haven’t you been paying attention, they’re evil and eternal. Illyria, how do you know about the Senior Partners?

ILLYRIA: Wesley is telling me that we must leave now. The Powers That Be are about to intervene, but we must leave the city. The stench of destruction is growing.

ANGEL: The Powers That Be. Ok, are you saying that you’re talking to Wes who is talking to the Powers That Be.

SPIKE: About damn time they stepped in. Illyria, tell the bloody sods that we’d appreciate some help here. Leavin us to do all the dirty work, and not so much as a pat on the back, or a show of support.

ANGEL: Spike, drop it. This is important. What is going on? What is Wes saying.

ILLYRIA: Wesley is saying we must move now – or else…

Just then, the door implodes and three large horned, dark green demons come storming into the room. Fight ensues. Spike tries to punch the demon who as come after him, misses and is thrown across the room. Angel picks up an ax leaning against the wall and swings. He hits the demon in the arm, but the demon just shakes it off. Illyria is kicking the demon, trying to pull its legs out from under it.

WESLEY: These are Cau demons. Common foot soldiers, but very strong. Wait they do have a weakness – Illyria, tell Angel and Spike to cut its horns off. That will lessen their strength.

Illyria puts the demon in a choke hold, grabs a horn and rips it off.

ILLYRIA: (yelling) Wesley said ripping their horns off will lessen their strength.

Both Angel and Spike start to beat the demons; Angel chops at the demons horns with his ax, slicing it right off. Spike does a flying tackle, grabbing at its head. Soon the fighting stops. Angel, Spike and Illyria are standing, out of breath, but victorious.

WESLEY: The Senior Partners are really hurting if they are sending Cau demons after you. You must leave now. There’s a park across the street from here. Towards the other side of park is a thicket of trees, in it you will find a cave entrance. But you must hurry, sunrise is approaching and these are not the only demons on the look out for you.

ILLYRIA: Come, we must go.

ANGEL: Are we just going for a stroll, because I would really like to know where we’re going.

ILLYRIA: No time, just follow.

She walks over the dead demon in the door. Spike looks at Angel, shrugs his shoulders and follows. Angel pulls the ax out of the demon’s head and turns to leave as well. He stops before getting out the door.

ANGEL: Wes, if you’re still here, (pauses) I, I, I hope you’re at peace.

He walks through the door. Wesley is standing in the corner smiling, Fred by his side.
