Buffy and William walked along the edge of the street. It was busy that morning. Buffy had counted more than ten carriages/horses go by.
“Is it usually this busy?” Buffy asked.
“Um no. Not particularly.” William said quietly.
“Wonder what’s going on.” Buffy said and William just shrugged. Suddenly they heard a deep voice calling William’s name.
“Patrick, I can’t talk right now. I have to get to school or I’ll be…” William was cut off by the man he called Patrick.
“Willy, my brother I know what’ll happen and I won’t let it so why don’t you just go on your merry way while I talk to this lovely lass you’re with.” Patrick said, Buffy noticed he had a different accent than William’s and wondered how they might be brothers.
“I’m going to go with him, thank you.” Buffy said trying to remain as polite as she possibly could. She didn’t like him.
“What you want to do with a little 16 year old boy if you can go with a strong man like me.” Patrick said into her face as he flexed his arms. She was able to smell the whiskey on his breath.
“I don’t want to go with you, I want to go with William.” Buffy said as she grabbed William’s arm surprising him a little.
“Fine if you want to be that way, little lass, than be that way.” Patrick said and he stormed off.
“I am sorry about my brother Patrick. You stood up for self very well though.” William said smiling at her. It was then that Buffy noticed that he was just about an inch or so taller, shorter than Spike was.
“I don’t deal to well with guys who talk bad to me. They get on my nerves. So how is he your brother? I don’t think I saw him at the house and his accent is different yours.” Buffy said as they continued to walk. They were almost to the spot that William had found her in.
“He’s not really my mother’s son. Before my father and mother were married my father was married. His wife died though and he was left with Patrick. Patrick’s mother was from Ireland and that’s where he wanted to grow up. He lived with my father and mother for sixteen years and then after that he decided to run away and he went to Ireland.” William said and Buffy saw a small glint of anger flash across his eyes.
“Something else happened didn’t it?” Buffy asked curiously
“When he ran away both father and mother were heart broken. My father went out looking for him and that’s when his boat was taken under siege. Neither one made it to Kathleen's funeral.” William said looking both angry and sad at the same time. She’d seen Spike look that way several times but never took into account why. She decided that when she got back she would see why, even though he was sort of her enemy.
“Well if you want my opinion I don’t like him that much.” Buffy said not sure if it was the right thing to say or not but when she saw a slight smile come across his face she decided it was alright to say.
“He’s not the best person but I try not to mind him because one should not hate another.” William said as he picked up his books and chalkboard.
“I know it’s hard for me sometimes.” Buffy said. She liked talking to William. He didn’t talk bad about her and she liked that. One thing she didn’t like though was that he didn’t always speak his mind like Spike did; of course this was only from one day of observation.
“Why are you doing this?” William asked suddenly.
“Doing what?” Buffy asked having no clue what he was talking about.
“Helping me.” William said.
“One I like helping people and two I like you, not that I don’t help people I’m not to fond of I just like you and that makes it a little easier.” Buffy said smiling
“Well thank you.” William said smiling and then the smile started to fade as he looked as his chalkboard.
“What’s wrong?” Buffy asked concerned.
“The chalk all ran off. I don’t remember what I was supposed to do.” William said quietly.
“Remember what I said we’d tell your headmaster. I said I’d tell him that you were saving me and all your stuff dropped. I’m sure he’ll understand.” Buffy said and William smiled a little.
“Now Mr. Preston, tell me again, and I want him to,” the headmaster said glaring at Buffy, “why your homework hasn’t been finished and why you are late.”
“W-well I was walking home when I um tripped over her by accident and all my books and my chalkboard fell and I am late because we ran into my um br-brother on the way here.” William said quietly.
“Why did you stop to talk to that idiotic man?” the headmaster said harshly and Buffy could see the hurt on William’s face.
“I-I didn’t mean to but he wanted to talk. You know I can’t control him, he’s older than me.” William said looking at his feet.
“Tell me again, I can’t hear very well when you are not looking at me.” The headmaster said strictly.
“I said that he wanted to and that I can’t control him because he is older.” William said looking at the man that Buffy was having a strong dislike for.
“You are lucky that this young lady here was able to back up your story or I would have had to cane you now go take your seat.” The headmaster said and William sat down while Buffy continued to stand.
“Miss you can have a seat next to William.” A woman with an eloquent British accent said as she came up behind Buffy. Buffy assumed that this was William’s actual teacher and she liked her.
“Thank you.” Buffy said and she went to go sit down as she smiled at William who smiled back.
