Nighthawk stood between Brett and the large demon known as Thi'Ne. Her sword, still covered in blood from the hell hound, sat ready for action. Behind her Brett stood terrified at the sight of the monster. Thi'Ne walked slowly up to the pair
“Bring me my freer and I will leave without incident.” Thi'Ne said commanding
“Why do you want him?” Nighthawk yelled back
“That is not your concern slayer just bring me the boy.”
“What the hell is that thing talking about?” Brett asked
“Just stay behind me.” Nighthawk said insistently
Brett looked at the masked woman in the leather with concern.
“What makes you think I can trust you anymore then I can trust him?”
“Not much of a choice.” Nighthawk replied clasping her sword in both hands
Thi'Ne narrowed his eyes and snarled at that pair of them.
“This is your final warning bring me my freer!”
Nighthawk didn’t reply. She stood ready as Thi'Ne approached. Now convinced that Brett wasn’t coming to him the large demon charged at them. Nighthawk stepped back and pushed Brett away. The many flew across the road a great distance landed roughly on the sidewalk. Nighthawk then charged the demon and swung out with her sword. Thi'Ne caught the blade and forced it out of her hand. He grabbed her by the throat and lifted Nighthawk high into the air. Feeling her airway close Nighthawk had to think quickly. Using the momentum of her swinging body she swung her legs out and kicked the demon in the face. Thi'Ne, started, dropped the champion and Nighthawk rolled across the ground picking up her sword again.
Brett watched this in amazement. All of his instincts told him to run but he just couldn’t look away. This woman literally dropped out of nowhere and now was fighting to protect him. Thi'Ne went back onto the attack. He swung out with his fists but Nighthawk ducked under each attack. The demon charged forward but she dropped to the ground and used the demons weight against him causing him to collapse. Nighthawk quickly jumped back up onto her feet and moved over to him. raising her sword above her head she was about to finish him off when Thi'Ne fist came out of nowhere catching her in the stomach and sent her flying back a couple of miles.
Painfully the champion tried to get back onto her feet. By this stage Thi'Ne was already up and moving towards Nighthawk. He only got a few feet when suddenly he was overwhelmed with magic. With difficulty he turned to see Lillian, Dana, and Naomi chanting while holding out crystals. In frustration the large demon scanned the area he noticed Brett sitting on the sidewalk completely in awe.
“Don’t think this is over boy,” he boomed, “You will assist me.”
With that he vanished in a bright flash of light. The Techno-Pagans lowered their arms.
“We weren’t strong enough.” Dana commented
“The idea was to slow him down not to stop him.” Lillian commented
“But if we had Megan . . .” Naomi said
“We need to see if there is anything we can salvage from the server,” Lillian replied, “Megans the best one for that. Come on we gotta pick up that Brett guy”
The three Techno- Pagans looked over in time to see Nighthawk drag Brett to his feet.
“Hey!” Lillian yelled as the two of them ran off
The Techno-Pagans gave chase but when they rounded the corner both Brett and nighthawk had completely disappeared.
“Why were those demons after you?” Nighthawk asked as she and Brett stood in the park.
“I don’t know,” Brett replied in frustration, “I was just trying to get home when that dog thing came out of no where and attacked me.”
“Then why did that big demon call you his freer?”
“You’re asking me?” Brett asked
Nighthawk sighed and put her hand on her hip.
Brett looked at the champion curiously. Between the tight leather pants, leather top, the long leather jacket and the mask he though she looked pretty hot but there was still one question on his mind.
“You know you didn’t answer me back there.” He said gruffly
Nighthawk looked up at him.
“Who are you?” he continued
“Nighthawk . . . OW!” she replied
Nighthawk shot an annoyed look down at The Wanderer who was tending to the wound on her hand. The Wanderer looked up.
“Sorry but this scratch needs to be cleaned.” He explained
Brett didn’t understand anything that was going on. Once the wanderer had finished Nighthawk walked up to the hacker.
“You can’t think of any reason why the demons came after you?”
“Hey!” Brett snapped back, “I didn’t know what a demon was until one nearly ran me off the road.”
During this conversation the wanderer noticed something near by. He walked over and examined it. As he brushed his hand over the burnt patch of grass he felt a strange energy.
“Nighthawk.” He called out
Nighthawk turned to look at the wanderer.
“Stay here” she ordered Brett as she went and joined her partner
She knelt down and looked at the burned patch. Nighthawk recognized it instantly.
“This was the patch I saw earlier on today while Jarrod was filming his segment.”
“It’s got some weird energy coming off It.” the wanderer commented, “What are we thinking? Witches?”
“Possibly. It would definitely explain a lot.”
“I still know a few covens in this district I can check in with them.”
“I’ll do that myself.”
“Alright but some can be testy.”
Nighthawk smiled at the old man.
“I think I can manage.” She replied sweetly
They both went back to examining the burned patch.
“What are we going to do about the boy?”
“He’ll have to come with us, “Nighthawk replied, “The streets are too dangerous for him at the moment.”
Nighthawk stood and turned around. She frowned when she realized that Brett had vanished. She rolled her eyes annoyed
“great.” She said in annoyance
“Little hacker boy go AWOL?” The Wanderer asked as he walked in next to her
“Yep,” Nighthawk replied, “There’s not much else we can do tonight I’ll get hope to see if she can find him.”
“And what if he’s busy being main course?”
Nighthawk thought about this.
“I don’t think they want to kill him. The really big demon said something about Brett freeing him.”
“How does a computer guy do that?”
“That’s what I’m trying to figure out.”
The Wanderer grunted.
“Never liked computers,” he replied, “always had a feeling they were gonna end the world.”
The three women returned to their coven annoyed. After Thi'Ne vanished there had been absolutely no sign of him on top of that that strange masked woman stole their only lead. This day was going from bad to worse. Inside the coven Megan was rigorously testing components for salvageability. She looked up when she saw the others return.
“How’d it go?” she asked
“Bad,” Naomi replied, “This other girl stole our guy.”
“What?”
“Long story.”
Dana moved next to Lillian and looked at her seriously.
“Do you think it was her?”
“Nighthawk? I don’t know.”
“Come on Lil you read the buzz on the internet about this woman. This is her type of thing.”
Lillian looked over to her friend.
“You of all people know how hard it is to filter out the fiction.”
“So you’re telling me some other masked woman stole our lead?”
Lillian sighed.
“I suppose you’re right. We better start working on a locater spell to . . . “
Just then they heard a low growl coming from outside. The women froze and listened. This growl was soon accompanied by several others. Slowly all four women backed away from the front wall a minute before the windows smashed and the room rapidly filled with demons.
The next morning Penny scuttles into the WNHK studios in a hurry. Last night’s fighting caused her to sleep in which in turn caused her to be late. When she got in Penny looked around stunned at seer pandemonium whirled around her. She stopped one of the passing cameramen.
“What’s going on Deke?” she asked
“Archie’s on the warpath,” he replied
“Why?”
Deke looked at Penny in surprise.
“You were awake yesterday right?” he replied in surprise, “That Luthor virus got into several of our servers last nigh and we lost most of the footage we were compiling.”
“Great,” Penny replied, “This is gonna be a fun day.”
“Just be glad that you’re not a cameraman who has to re-shoot nine hours of video.” Deke replied before he rushed off down the hall
Penny sighed heavily and started to make her way down the hall to Jarrod’s office. Around her heavily panicked people rushed left and right. As she passed the server room she saw a young looking man working on the computers. Penny knew that the station hired outside support and figured that this guy was the guy. Curiously Penny walked in.
“Hope you weren’t, like, planning on going home early.” she joked
Brett stood up and brushed his hair back.
“You don’t know the half of it,” Brett replied, “This damn virus has me running around this whole city.”
Out of the corner of his eye he noticed Penny’s stunned expression. He looked at the red head curiously
“Sorry did I say something wrong?”
“No, ah, you just looked like someone I talked to last night.”
Brett smirked.
“I get that a lot,” he replied, “but it’s usually followed by a restraining order.”
The more he looked at the woman in front of him the more something was tugging at him in the back of his mind.
“Have I seen you someplace before?” Brett asked, “God, that’s a really bad line. Forget I said it.”
Penny smiled at him amused.
“It’s okay I work here. I’m a PA.”
“Public address system? You don’t look that big?”
Penny laughed.
“I’m a personal assistant.” She replied
Just then Jarrod rushed into the room.
“Penny, great, we have to do that god forsaken dog story again and I can’t remember what I had to say.” He said panicked
Penny turned to him.
“There should be a copy on your computer. . .” she started
Jarrod gave her a look.
“ . . . Which would have been affected by the virus, okay, I’ll help you try to remember it.”
“You’re a peach,” Jarrod replied, “hey, what happened to your hand?”
Penny looked down at the giant scratch on her right hand. Although she got it only a few hours ago it looked like it was a week old.
“I, ah, got it caught in a door. It was, like, totally painful.”
“You gotta be more careful. You know if I don’t have you around to ground me I’ll probably go on a murder spree.” Jarrod joked
Penny smiled at the reporter.
“We can’t have that.”
When penny dropped her hand Brett got a good look at the room. It didn’t look like it was trapped in the door more like something big scratched her. Brett looked up at the woman suspiciously. Penny made her way down to Jarrod’s office which he lovingly refers to as ‘the ninth circle of hell’. Inside Penny tried to reorganize the dog report from yesterday where there was a light knock on the door. She looked up to see Brett standing smiling at her in the doorway.
“Hi,” he said sweetly, “Thought I might look at your boss’s computer while I was here.”
Penny gestured to the pc on the other desk and Brett went to work. Occasionally he looked up Penny with a fascinated expression.
“So . . . this guy you spoke to,” Brett commented, “where was he?”
“Hmm?” Penny asked slightly distracted
“This guy who looked like me where did you see him? Was it at, like, a club or something?”
“I can’t remember.”
“You don’t remember? You talked to the guy last night.”
“I was, like, fully tired.”
“You gotta know where it was thought,” Brett said in a deliberate tone, “Maybe, I don’t know, he was standing in the middle of an intersection while you were dressed in leather fighting a monster.”
Penny looked up. She kept her face away from him to hide her worried expression.
“What the heck are you talking about?”
“I’m just saying is all.”
Just then Penny’s phone rang. She picked up the receiver and answered it.
“Penny Whitfield?” she said
“Outside.” The Wanderer replied
“Alright I’ll get that done.” Penny replied hanging up the receiver
Penny stood up quickly and gathers her things.
“Where you going?” Brett asked
“Jarrod wants me to run some errands.” Penny lied
Quickly she rushed out the door. A moment later Brett stopped what he was doing and followed. Out the front The Wanderer stood with Hope on his shoulder. He noticed penny was moving quicker then usual.
“What’s up?” she asked when she finally arrive
The Wanderer handed Penny a list.
“These are the covens that I was talking about. I’ve worded them up that your coming.”
“Good.” penny replied scanning the addresses
The Wanderer looked at Penny in concern.
“What was with the running?” he asked
“I have, like, this problem.” she replied
“It’s not gonna get in the way is it?”
“I can deal.” Penny replied, “Keep me posted.”
The Wanderer nodded and walked away. After she finished scanning the list she slipped it into her purse. She turned to head back inside to find Brett smiling at her. Penny frowned and looked around the area. She sensed that someone was following her but she thought she lost them.
“Witches huh?” he asked, “Do they usually help out with the news?”
“I don’t know . . .” Penny started
“ . . . what I’m talking about, yeah, real shock.”
Brett walked up and leaned smugly into Penny’s face.
“You’re Nighthawk.” he said
“No I’m not.” Penny replied as calmly as she could
Brett walked over and put his arm around Penny’s shoulder.
“Now how did I know you were gonna say that?” he replied, “Let’s look at the facts shall we? Last night I was saved by a five foot something red head who got hurt on her right hand. This morning I see a similar looking five foot something red head with a scratch on her right hand that looks exactly the same. I’m not the best at math but I can put two and two together.”
Penny shot him a look.
“Are you saying I’m the only short red head in this town?”
“No I’m saying that you’re the only short red head in town who has the same injury as the girl last night.”
Penny looked at the hacker seriously but Brett wasn’t fazed. He began to walk her back into the building.
“It would be a real shame if this information leaked out to the news, for instance, WNHK?”
“What do you want?” she asked angrily
“I’m thinking exclusive rights and any profits that come from merchandising.”
Penny nodded her head.
“I have a different deal in mind . . .” she replied
Moving at lightning speed Penny ducked out of Brett’s grip and twisted his arm behind his back. Pushing with her foot she sent him stumbling across the ground. He slammed hard against the wall but before he fell Penny grabbed him by the throat and lifted him into the air. Brett was shocked at how strong she was.
“ . . . we’re gonna forget this ever happened and your not going to tell anybody.” Penny concluded, “Deal?”
Brett tried to reply but Penny was choking him. In the end he nodded. Penny released him and Brett dropped to the ground. He looked up at her.
“You fight dirty for a girl.” he said
“Watch it!” Penny retorted
At that moment Penny sensed something was in the area. She turned to see three demons snarling wildly at her and Brett. Brett started to scramble back in shock. One of the demons reached out his hand and a spear materialized. Aiming carefully he tossed it at Penny. Moving swiftly she leaned around and caught it mid flight. Moving to the center of the driveway penny readied herself for a fight and she wasn’t disappointed. The three demons charged her. She stood aside, letting the demon past as she swung the spear around hitting him on the back of the head. She continued the momentum of her weapon and laid in a couple of other hits on the two other demons. As they tried to recover leaped and flipped out of the center of the circle.
Brett watched in awe as she sailed about fifteen feet into the air and landed safely behind the three monsters. Penny spun the spear with expert precision but before she attacked she noticed that the demons looked like they were in intense pain. Since she wasn’t the cause she wondered where this pain was coming from. She looked over to Brett who was gesturing to look behind herself. Penny turned to see Megan, limping and covered in blood, holding up a crystal and chanting. Slowly the demons backed away then, in a flash of light, vanished completely.
Megan breathed a sigh of relief before she started to stumble. Penny moved in and caught her before she hit the ground. Megan looked up at Penny.
“That’s a lot harder to do on your own.” She said
“What was that?” Penny asked
Megan smiled
“That was a restraining spell but you need more then one person to make it work great.”
“Who are you?” Penny asked
“My name is Megan Galloway,” Megan replied tiredly, “I came to look for you Nighthawk.”
