“Hey you were out late,” Charlie said with a knowing smirk, when Dawn came into their cabin and began to change into a new pair of clothes.
“And weren’t those the clothes you were wearing yesterday?” Tibby said with a knowing smirk of her own.
“Shut up,” Dawn said with a laugh as she continued to get ready.
“Oh come on spill we want details,” Charlie said.
“Maybe not to many details,” Tibby said, “But you know a few here and there.”
“I think you guys know what happened,” Dawn said.
“My mother told me never to assume anything,” Charlie said.
“Yeah, it makes and ass out of u and me,” Tibby agreed.
“Since when did either of you listen to your mothers,” Dawn said and then smiled caving, “We well you know…”
“If you can do it you can say it,” Tibby said.
“We made love,” Dawn said with a smile.
“Aww our little girl’s growing up,” Tibby said.
“Ha-ha,” Dawn said.
“So how was it?” Charlie asked.
“Amazing.”
*****************
“Dawn, telephone for you,” her consular said, stepping into their cabin. They had just gotten back from dinner.
“Who is it?” Dawn asked.
“Your sister. It’s in the office,” the consular replied.
Dawn nodded and headed towards the office.
“Tibby and I are going to go up to the camp fire okay?” Charlie said, “We’ll see you up there.”
“Sure,” Dawn nodded and left.
**************
“Hello?” Dawn said, putting the receiver to her ear.
“Hey Dawnie,” Buffy’s voice came through the telephone, it sounded tired.
“You okay?”
“Yeah,” Dawn could almost imagine the pained smile that was on Buffy’s face. It was the same one she always gave her before she told her bad news, “You-you need to come home.”
“Why? Can’t it wait camps almost over?”
“I know.”
“What’s going on Buffy?”
“I’ll tell you when you come home.”
“No, tell me now,” Dawn said, stubbornness in her voice.
She could hear her sister sigh, “It’s….bad…news.”
“What happened? Is-Is it mom?”
“Mom had an…accident…..something went wrong…from the tumor.”
Dawn could feel her legs go weak. She felt like she was going to collapse. She fought back the tears in her eyes, “But she’s okay right? Its bad but…she’s okay?” The words came out desperately. Dawn knew the truth but she hoped to God maybe.
“Dawn…mom died this afternoon.”
Dawn felt her breath catch in her throat and tears rising, “No.”
“I don’t know exactly what happened but she’s dead.”
“No, no, NO! No, no, you’re lying. She’s fine! She’s fine and you’re lying.”
“Dawn,” she could hear the desperation in her sister’s voice. She was feeling all the pain does was and it was breaking her heart to tell her.
Dawn slumped down to the floor the phone still in her ear and she sobbed. The people who worked in the office looked at her. They were sorry. They felt bad but they didn’t know what to do, “This can’t be happening.”
“Dawnie, you need to come home.”
“Okay,” Dawn said, gently hanging up the phone.
Its amazing how one minute you could be so happy and the next everything falls apart and just goes to hell. Dawn closed her eyes tightly.
******************
“Mom,” a younger Dawn asked coming into her mother’s room. It was dark and she had been scared that a monster was in her closet, “Can I sleep with you?”
Joyce smiled at her youngest daughter and nodded, moving over to allow her into the bed. Dawn got in and cuddled up next to her mother, who hugged her close to her body and kissed her on top of the head, “What’s wrong sweetheart?”
“There’s a monster in my closet.”
“Don’t worry there is no such thing as monsters and even if there were I’d protect you. As long as I’m here you’re safe.”
Dawn smiled and snuggled closer.
**********************
Dawn opened her eyes. It really is amazing how you could lose someone so quickly or how everything can disappear in a flash. Things take so long to build and yet they’re so easily destroyed.
