The characters in this story do not belong to me (except Jay), they are owned by Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy and WB. I am not making any money by using them(D'OH!).
Authors note: This is the first volume of my Jaden trilogy, and my first ever fanfic. Response, good or bad, is welcome at themanwithnoname@hotmail.com.
The story is set after the end of the second season, towards the beginning of the third. Buffy is back in Sunnydale, Angel is in hell. It should be noted that the last six episodes of series two have not been shown in England yet, so I am just using the information I have read on the Internet. Sorry if it's not accurate!

Part One
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The noise from Sunnydale high was deafening as Xander and Cordeilia walked down the corridor towards the library. A group of girls in one area were gossiping and Cordeilia was having trouble stopping herself from going across to join in. She got a few stares as she walked by, her arm entwined with Xander's. Some people still didn't understand why she was dating him, but she was getting used to it by now, so she just ignored them.
The two opened the door to the library and disappeared inside. Giles was busy reading in one corner, while Willow and Buffy sat at the table in the middle lost in conversation. They looked up as the door closed.
"Hey," Buffy said in a tired voice. She yawned, and quickly covered her mouth with her hand.
"Hey," Xander returned, "another busy night?"
"Twelve vamps," was Buffy's reply.
"Ooh, another record!" Cordeilia exclaimed.
"Yeah," Buffy said in a less than enthusiastic voice. "But sometimes I think it's making me crazy."
"So what's the word G-man," Xander spoke, looking at Buffy's watcher.
Giles gave him a disapproving look. He really hated that name. Seeing the look, Cordeilia hit Xander on the arm.
"I can't find any obvious reason for the increased activity, although it could be due to the lack of a suitable leader that is causing them to attack at random."
Buffy yawned again. In the three months that she had been back in Sunnydale she had been constantly facing six or seven vamps a night, instead of the usual one or two, and it had got even worse this last week. To cap it all off, Principal Snyder wanted to see her about something. *Wonder what I've done wrong now*, she thought. It seemed that, ever since he had been forced to let her back into the school he didn't need an excuse to have a go at her.
She got up from the table that she had been sat on and started to walk towards the door.
"Later guys, Toadboy is on my case again"
"Doesn't he ever leave you alone?" Willow asked.
"Only in my dreams," Buffy replied, as her smile turned into another yawn.
"Don't worry Buff, the vamps will slow down soon," Xander reassured her.
Buffy just smiled tiredly and walked out the door, waving to her friends as she left.

Buffy knocked on the door to the Principal's office and waited for the reply. Around her the noise of the other students was drowned out by workmen doing repairs.
Eventually the door open and the less than cheery face of Principal Snyder stood in front of her.
"Miss Summers, why don't you come in," he stated.
Buffy entered the office and shut the door behind her.
"Please, have a seat," Snyder gestured to a chair as he spoke.
"Thanks," Buffy replied sitting down.
She look at him, his eyes betraying his hatred of her, even if his voice didn't. This fact didn't surprise Buffy at all; in fact it was mutual.
"I won't waste my time with pleasantries," Snyder began. "We currently have a visitor from England, an exchange student. I want you to show him around, be nice to him, if you can manage that, and above all make him feel at home."
"Why me?" Buffy asked, a puzzled look on her face.
"Three reasons, firstly you spend a lot of time with our librarian, so you know something about English people."
Buffy didn't think that was too likely, knowing something about Giles, and something about a normal English guy were likely to be two different things.
"Secondly," Snyder continued, "I don't like you very much, therefore I think it is my duty to make your life here a living hell!"
He smiled sweetly to her as he said it.
"And thirdly?" she asked.
"Thirdly," he paused for a moment smiling again, "thirdly, I don't like the English much either!"

Willow and Buffy moved towards the bus station quickly, talking as they went. School had ended an hour ago, and Willow had agreed to go with her friend, and meet the mysterious English guy.
"I still don't see why I have to do it," the slayer whined for the forth time that hour.
"It won't be so bad, besides he might be cute and you haven't been on a date since..."
Buffy cut her off with a look.
"Sorry, I know that you must still be hurting from Angel, but perhaps it's time you moved on. It might help."
Buffy only nodded. It did still hurt, a lot, but Angel was gone and finding someone else might help her to forget. There were a few guys in school who had asked her out, but she had refused. Perhaps next time she might say yes.
The two girls arrived at the station a few minutes late. The bus had just pulled away, and the new arrivals were moving away. All except one.
Buffy looked over to see a tall guy standing at the side of the road. He looked older than her, maybe nineteen or twenty. He was one of the best looking guys she'd ever seen. He had short black hair, and the most unusual eyes; bright green, the colour of jade. He was wearing dark blue jeans, a long white shirt, worn loose, and a black leather jacket. He had no luggage of any kind that Buffy could see. *Must be arriving later,* she thought.
He looked up and noticed her staring at him. She blushed slightly and tugged at her friend's multi-coloured top. Willow turned around and notice the stranger for the first time. She was just as impressed as Buffy had been. He started to walk over to them.
"I had no idea that the school would send such beautiful girls to meet me," he began.
Buffy felt herself blush again, and a look at her friend showed that it was catching.
"Jay Silverwood," he said, extending his hand towards Buffy.
"Buffy Summers," she replied, taking his hand and shaking it warmly.
"Willow Rosenberg", Willow said as she shook his hand when he offered it to her.
He smiled in their direction.
"I hope I haven't inconvenienced either of you," he asked politely.
"It's no problem," Buffy replied. "Come on, we'll show you around."

Buffy and the four Slayerettes sat in the library talking about Jay. In the two weeks since he had arrived, it seemed that everybody had taken a shine to him, even Xander, despite the fact that he showed an obvious like to Buffy, which ordinarily would have sent him into resentment overload. Cordeilia smiled to herself about that. Perhaps he was finally beginning to let his feelings for her dissipate. A knock at the door interrupted them. Giles looked up from his work.
"Hello?" he enquired.
The door opened and Jay stepped through the opening.
"Hi guys," he said smiling to them all.
"Hey," Buffy replied first, giving a voice for everyone.
He came in and sat down at the table with them.
"Anything exciting happening?"
"We were just, err, talking about what were doing this weekend," Willow spoke up.
Jay smiled and nodded. She wasn't a very good liar. Her face was red, matching the colour of her hair. Oz reached over and took hold of her hand.
"So what do you think of Sunnydale," he asked, changing the subject. Willow looked up at her boyfriend and smiled.
"It's not what I expected," Jay admitted, "I don't think TV gives a good enough impression of what Californian kids are like."
"You obviously haven't spent time with Cordeilia's friends," Xander joked. Cordeilia hit him on the arm and glared at him.
"Over-reaction much," he said while rubbing his arm. He used his girlfriend's favourite saying, whilst mimicking her voice. Cordeilia hit him again.
"So then, what are you doing this weekend?" Jay asked innocently. Inwardly he smiled; he knew full well that they had been talking about him, but he couldn't help asking the question. Buffy reacted the quickest.
"We were thinking of going to the Bronze," she said. This at least was true; it's what they thought of doing every weekend. Of course they were usually busy with other things, such as averting Armageddon.
"Sounds like a plan," Jay replied. He looked at Buffy thoughtfully for a few moments, before speaking again.
"Buffy, would you like to go out with me tonight?"
Buffy was surprised by his approach. Most guys she new would have acted nervously and stuttered a lot while asking her on a date; they would definitely never have had the guts to ask in front of her friends. This made her admire him even more than she did already. It was then that she noticed everyone looking at her expectantly, even Giles. She blushed slightly.
"Sure, I'd love to," she replied, suddenly realising just how much she'd love to. She quickly looked up at Giles, who nodded slightly, his signal that it would be all right for her to go, as long as she was back in time for patrol; things had slowed down a bit in the last couple of weeks, but there were still more vampires than usual.
Jay smiled at Buffy's answer. If he had seen Buffy's questioning look at Giles, he gave no sign of wondering why she might seek his approval before going on a date.
"Great, I'll pick you up at eight," he said.
"Better make it seven," Buffy replied, "My mom wants me to be home early."
Jay smiled again. Her thought that Buffy was a much better liar than Willow.
* * *
Buffy laughed loudly at Jay's joke, causing most of the packed restaurant to look at her. She blushed at the attention, but Jay just smiled.
"Adults always seem to forget how to have fun," he said.
Buffy nodded in agreement, although she knew that at twenty, Jay was a bit too old to be making that statement. She looked around, still not quite believing that she was eating in the most expensive restaurant in Sunnydale. She was surprised that Jay could afford it, but then it probably cost quite a lot to come to America as an exchange student, so maybe his parents were rich or something. Buffy wasn't especially bothered by this, although someone like Cordeilia would have been delighted. Buffy didn't care about money; but, she realised, she did care about Jay.
The two ate their meal, their conversation turning to Buffy's life in Sunnydale. She told him all about it, carefully missing out the vampire bits, and anything else she didn't want him to find out about. *No sense scaring him away*, she thought. After they had finished, Jay paid the bill and they left.
"I'll walk you home," Jay offered.
Buffy looked at her watch. It was twenty past nine, so there was plenty of time before she had to go on patrol. *Besides,* she thought, *it might be nice to be walked home, rather than doing the walking.*
As they walked, Jay offered his hand, and Buffy placed her own in it. Thoughts of Angel couldn't have been further from her mind as they walked along, hand in hand.
When they reached her house, she stopped and turned to face him.
"I had a nice time," she said.
"Me too," he replied, "we'll have to do it again sometime."
"Defina-," she began, but was cut off by his lips pressed against her own. She closed her eyes and kissed him back. They embraced for what seemed like an eternity, before a loud growl interrupted them.
Buffy reluctantly moved away from Jay, sighing; she already knew what was behind her.
"Run," she commanded Jay. He just shook his head. He looked over at the three vampires who were standing at the edge of the pavement in front of Buffy's house. Their faces were already transformed, and their eyes glowed bright yellow in the dark. One of them growled again before speaking.
"Hope we didn't interrupt anything slayer," he said the last with a snarl. Buffy winced when he called her that. Now what was she going tell Jay. *Oh well, first things first,* she thought, and began to move towards the three vampires. To her surprise, Jay was there before her. It obviously surprised the vampire as well, as he made no effort to move out of the way of his fist, which knocked him clear onto the road.
Buffy had no time to wonder at this, as one of the vamps was on her in a flash. She punched him in the face, followed with a kick in his stomach and then another punch, in the groin. The vampire groaned, and collapsed on the floor in pain. Buffy reached into her jacket pocket, and pulled out a stake.
"Never leave home without it," she said, before driving it into the fallen vampire's chest. He erupted in a cloud of dust, allowing her to move on to the next.
Jay, meanwhile, was still battling with the vampire that he had knocked over. It was now enraged, throwing punches wildly. Jay spun around and planted a roundhouse kick to the vampire's head. It managed to turn slightly, lessening the impact, and managing to stay on its feet. It ran at Jay and punched him hard in the face, knocking him to the ground. Jay flipped himself back up, showing no sign of pain on his face. What he did show was anger. He gave a loud snarl.
Buffy looked up from the vamp she was attempting to slay, and gasped in shock. Jay's face was gone, giving way to the features of a vampire; a look of hatred on his face as he stared directly at the vamp in front of him. His long fangs showed as he screamed in rage; only his eyes were the same, shining bright green.
Buffy's stake slipped from her hand, giving the vampire she had been fighting the chance that it needed. The vamp dived at her, knocking her to the ground with a huge thud.
Jay, ignoring the vamp which had made him so angry that he had revealed his dark secret, turned towards the other vampire, who was climbing on top of Buffy.
"She's *mine*," he yelled, grabbing hold of the vampire by the neck and throwing him to the ground. He picked up Buffy's dropped stake and slammed it into the vampire's heart, watching, satisfied, as its ashes exploded around him.
Buffy shook her head to clear it. She looked up and saw Jay throw the stake at the last, vampire, which was momentarily surprised by the accuracy of the throw, before disintegrating. She looked up at Jay, whose demonic features betrayed no emotions. He stared at her for a long moment, before disappearing into the night.
Buffy curled herself up into a ball and cried.
* * *
"Am I cursed?" Buffy asked her friends. Her eyes were red, and she had a large lump on her head where she had fallen. She had run straight to the library, not even bothering to go in to see her mother. She had expected Giles to be here, but had been surprised to find that Willow and Xander were there already, helping Giles sort out his books.
"Not cursed, just unlucky with men," Xander answered. Willow gave him a stern look, and he subconsciously rubbed his arm, before realising that no one had hit him.
"We're all surprised that Jay's a vampire," Giles added, obvious concern for Buffy in his voice. *This is the last thing she needs after the business with Angel,* he thought.
"If he's a vampire he must have some terrific sun block cream," Xander said.
Everyone turned to look at him.
"I mean, we all saw him in the daylight and everything."
They all thought about this, as if it hadn't occurred to any of them before.
"Is there any way for a vampire to walk around in the day?" Willow asked Giles.
"Not that I am aware of, but I could have a look. Buffy," he turned to face her, "is there anything you remember that might help me?"
Buffy shook her head.
"I wouldn't have believed it myself if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes..."
She stopped talking a thoughtful look on her face.
"What is it?" Giles asked.
"His *eyes*," Buffy responded. "When he turned into a," Buffy couldn't bring herself to say it. "Changed," she continued, "his eyes didn't turn yellow, they stayed the same colour."
"Hmm," Giles muttered thoughtfully, "perhaps you'd better go home and rest Buffy, you've had quite a shock. We'll talk about it in the morning when I've had a chance to do some research."
Buffy nodded and slid of the table and began to walk towards the door.
"Night," Willow called. Buffy just waved and started home.
