A large apartment in Rome, overlooking a small, out of the way piazza. Inside, bad news was just delivered. Giles is standing in the middle of the living room, Dawn & Buffy are sitting on the couch. Andrew is piddling around in the kitchen.
GILES: My source tells me that there’s not much left. The area around Wolfram & Hart offices is damaged, and the neighborhood around the hotel is leveled. No survivors have been spotted.
BUFFY: But you still haven’t told me what happened. I mean, what could cause that much destruction?
GILES: It appears that Angel and his group took on the Senior Partners.
Giles removed his glasses and pinched the bridge of his nose. Buffy looked out the window, her lips pursed.
DAWN: Wait – I thought you said Angel was an agent of the Senior Partners – that’s why we couldn’t see him when he was here.
GILES: We may have miscalculated what Angel was up to…
BUFFY: Miscalculated. Not the word I was thinking of Giles. How about betrayed, left to fend for himself, we went all Benedict Arnold on him the minute the situation looked like he had given up.
Buffy stands up.
GILES: Now wait just a minute – it appeared that he had given himself to the other side, we had no confirmation that he didn’t.
BUFFY: I had confirmation. I should have listen to what my heart said.
DAWN: What about Spike? Did your sources say anything about him.
Andrew enters the room with an apron on and a dish towel slung over his shoulder.
ANDREW: Well, oh fearless leader, I would hope that your source in LA would have contacted us sooner. It sounds like the type of fight we should have known about. Angel and Spike never said anything to me about unleashing hell on earth when they were here. I’m upset they didn’t trust me more.
BUFFY: This doesn’t sound like the type of thing you tell anyone you’re planning. Hullo – starting an apocalypse to take out the biggest evil ever. Just thought you’d like to know. We need to find out what happened; I need to know what happened to Angel… (pauses a beat) and Spike. I need to go to LA.
GILES: I strongly advise against that. We don’t know if this war is over or who won or if there are any survivors, where they are. No, it’s too dangerous.
BUFFY: Giles, we should have been there. What’s the use of having an army if you’re not going to kick some evil butt now and then. I need to know who’s left standing. If Angel or Spike or any of his group survived, the least we could do is lend a hand. Angel has done a lot for me, for us. And remember what Spike did. My heart is telling me they survived, in what shape, who knows, but I think they are waiting for me.
Buffy starts to go to her bedroom.
GILES: It’s very possible that you will find the battle over and nothing is left for you to save, or worse you’ll just land in the middle of a losing battle.
BUFFY: It’s the least I can do. You know, fight the good fight. Come on Dawn, let’s go home.
