Rebecca sat quietly in the teachers lounge. It was her first day of work and already she had two signs that she was going to have to return to demon fighting. This bothered her immensely since she promised Alex that that was never going to happen. A cup of coffee was placed in front of her. Rebecca looked up to see a kind face smiling at her.

“You look like you needed it.” the woman said as she sat down next to her

Rebecca smiled at the woman.

“Thanks.” She replied

“I’m Abby by the way,” the Woman said cheerfully, “I teach English.”

“Rebecca.”

“You’re the new councilor right? I hope you fare better then the last one.”

Rebecca looked at abbey curiously.

“What happened to the last one?”

“Got burned out, poor guy, just couldn’t take the pace. This might seem like a peaceful place but I’ve seen a lot of weird things happen at this school.”

Rebecca sipped on her coffee thoughtfully. Abby frowned slightly

“Oh I’m sorry,” Abby said apologetically, “I didn’t mean to scare you on your first day.”

“You didn’t scare me.” Rebecca replied smiling

Across the room Coach Daniel Miller looked at the two ladies. He smiled slyly at Rebecca then wandered over. Abby noticed this and rolled.

“Look out captain macho is on the move.” she warned

Coach Miller stood between.

“Afternoon ladies.” He said cheerfully

“Hi Dan.” Abby said blandly

Coach Miller looked over to Rebecca and his smile broadened.

“Who’s your friend?” he asked suggestively

“Rebecca Whitfield.” Rebecca replied

The Coach snapped his fingers and pointed at her.

“New Sex Ed. Teacher right?” he asked, “If you ever need anybody to practice on my office door is always open.”

Rebecca and Abby shared a look.

“I’m the new councilor.” Rebecca replied

“Like is said if you need anything my door is open.”

Coach Miller winked at her then walked off. Rebecca shook her head slowly.

“What is his deal?” she asked

“He a class A jackass,” Abby replied, “other then that that’s all you need to know.”

Just then Nigel stepped into the teachers lounge. Rebecca watched him carefully as he walked over to an empty table and sat down. Rebecca excused herself and walked over to him. She sat in the adjacent chair and glared angry.

“That was a low act.” She snapped at him quietly, “sending a student in to do your dirty work.”

Nigel looked at her in confusion.

“I have absolutely no idea what your are talking about.” He replied

“No idea, so Heidi Marsh knowing that I was the Divine One was just a coincidence?”

Nigel’s look shifted to surprise.

“She said those exact words?”

“She sat there and said that people talk to her and that she was supposed to help me and the new slayer stop some big event.”

“Did Miss Marsh say what the event was?”

“No, all she said is that it was going to hurt a lot of people.”

Nigel pondered this.

“I look in to this see what I can find out. In the mean time I suggest that you have another conversation with Heidi.”

“You’re not my watcher.”

Nigel rolled his eyes.

“I don’t want to keep fighting you Rebecca. It would be a lot easier all around if you worked with us.”

“What are you doing?” Belle asked as she and her brother sat down to lunch.

Nolan looked her up and down curiously.

“I’m trying to see if you’re growing horns and stuff.”

Belle glared at him.

“Don’t be an idiot.”

“I’m not being,” Nolan replied, “I just wanted to find out if being a slayer means that you get any cool disfiguring growths.”

Belle punched Nolan in the arm. Nolan grabbed in arm in pain.

“Ow! Hey! Watch it with the super strength!” he snapped

Over Nolan’s shoulder something caught Belles attention. The girls who use to hang around with Britney had caught up with Heidi and were now manhandling her.

“Fess up you little witch!” one of them yelled, “What did you do to Britney? Did you cast a spell on her?”

Heidi looked terrified. Through the group she saw Belle sitting and watching. She gave the slayer an expression informing her that she needed help.

“I got to do something.” Belle said as she stood up

Nolan looked at her desperately.

“What did I tell you about messing with the natural order?” he asked, “they’re bullies; they’re higher up on the food chain then us.”

Belle ignored him. She strode over and pulled the girls off Heidi. The first girl glared at her.

“Leave her alone Sarah.” Belle said seriously

Sarah looked her straight in the eye.

“Never thought you were a freak lover Galloway.”

“It’s more like I can’t stand idiots.”

“Then why do you hang with your brother?”

“Idiots I can get away from.”

“That’s real sweet Belle but if you don’t mind kinda in the middle of something.”

Sarah moved to grab Heidi again. Belle grabbed her by the arm and pulled her away. Sarah glared at her and pushed her hard. Belle returned the favor sending the cheerleader flying across the room into the wall. Stunned she helped Heidi to her feet.

“You okay?” belle asked

Heidi just looked at her in shock.

“Slayer.” she replied

Darrel Gibson walked calmly into the administration office of Raleighfield high. The receptionist smiled sweetly at him.

“Hi my name is Darrel Gibson; I’m an attorney from Alore & Struts, I’m looking for a Mrs. Rebecca Whitfield.” he asked calmly

The receptionist directed him and he thanked her. Darrel calmly walked the halls of the school. It seemed like a nice friendly place but he wasn’t here to admire the view. It only took him a few minutes to find the door to Rebecca's office and he knocked quietly.

“Come in.” Rebecca said from inside

Expecting another student Rebecca was surprised to see a well dressed man enter. The lawyer smiled at her and placed his briefcase on one of the chairs.

“Mrs. Whitfield?” he asked officially, “My name is Darrel Gibson I represent Alore & Struts attorneys.”

“Oh,” Rebecca replied surprised, “I’m not in any trouble am I?”

Darrel smiled at her.

“Oh no, this is nothing serious, I’m here on behalf of a couple of clients who entered you into their wills”

Rebecca looked at him in a confused manner. Darrel laid the briefcase down flat he opened it slightly. He pulled out the small black box.

“I don’t remember any of this.” Rebecca commented

“It happened suddenly, none of us were prepared for it, but the three elderly gentlemen were very insistent with their instructions.”

“You might have the wrong person. I don’t remember any elderly . . . “

And then it hit her. Rebecca stood up cautiously watching the lawyers every move.

“I’m sure you do remember them. They went by the names Wolf, Ram and Hart.”

Rebecca prepared herself for an attack. Darrel stood up brandishing the black box. He pressed the button and Rebecca felt a small pop in her right arm. She clutched it curiously

“What did you do to me?” she asked

“You’ll just have to wait and see.” Darrel replied

There was a moments silence between them. Then a mischievous smile crossed Darrel’s face.

“Oh what the hell I’m too impatient.” He continued

Darrel leaned in forcefully placing his hands on Rebecca's desk

“It’s a virus,” he explained, “genetically programmed for you.”

Rebecca's face when white she looked at the smug lawyer in complete shock.

“You see Wolfram and Hart were not entirely convinced that they could control you so as a countermeasure they created this pathogen which they then implanted into your arm just after you were born.”

“But I’ve had X-rays before on that arm nobody found anything.” Rebecca replied

“That was easy the capsule was inscribed with a masking spell to make sure that it couldn’t be detected by any means.”

Rebecca had gotten over the initial shock and had shifted to serious mode.

“How long?” she asked

“This is the thing. The prophecy of the divine was never clear on how powerful you’d become so we took a guess. It was supposed to kill you in two weeks but at your current rat of regeneration we figure that you have about six months to a year.”

Rebecca dropped down onto her seat. She rubbed her right arm thoughtfully.

“Cheer up that’s good news,” Darrel continued, “of course it’s going to be a lot more painful but still . . . “

“Get out!” Rebecca growled

Darrel collected his briefcase and headed for the door. He was about to leave when something crossed his mind.

“Oh one thing there was a little complication with the impaling process which makes the darn virus immune to magic. So don’t think you can call in your goddess friend to help. Have a nice life Mrs. Whitfield, well, what’s left of it.”

That evening Belle and Nigel wandered through the graveyard. Nigel had in a serious expression while Belle was a lot more casual.

“The slayer has to be vigil at all times,” Nigel said as he looked around, “she must be aware of her opponent before they are aware of you.”

“Why are you wearing bright yellow?” belle asked as she noticed Nigel’s tie.

Nigel rolled his eyes.

“Can you please focus Miss Galloway?”

“I’m trying but if we’re trying to be stealthy we shouldn’t be wearing loud colors.”

“Noted. Now what do you’re . . . “

“Why did you buy it anyways it looks horrible?”

“Miss. Galloway!”

“Sorry!” Belle replied sarcastically, “What do I have to do?”

“Does anything seem out of place?”

Belle looked around the surrounding. At first everything seemed fine but something springed out at her that she.

“I’d say the hand clawing its way out of the ground doesn’t fit.” She replied nervously

Nigel looked over. The vampire grabbed and clawed at the soft earth as it tried to free it’s self from the ground. From his bag Nigel handed bell a stake and a cross.

“Now go attack it.”

“What?” belle said surprised, “I’m not touching that thing!”

“This is your calling slayer.”

“What are you going to do?”

“I will be on the sidelines guiding you.”

Belle looked at him as if he was insane.

“Wouldn’t it make sense if both of us fought it? I mean two against one . . .”

“I am the Watcher you are the Slayer. The Slayer slays and the Watcher . . . “

“Notifies the next of kin.”

“You’re looking at this two negatively its instinct, its gut reaction. All you have to do is anticipate.”

“Yeah but what am I suppose to . . ?”

The vampire jumped her. Nigel stepped out of the way. Belle struggled against the vampire’s strength and eventually pushed him off her.

“Do you feel your power Belle? Your strength and your speed?”

Belle climbs back onto her feet and readies herself for whatever is coming next. The vampire snarled and charged her moving quickly she ducked down and tripped him.

“You must use all of your senses and instinct,” Nigel continued, “A slayer must be aware of her surroundings at all times.”

Belle climbed onto of the vamp and pounded his face for a while. She grabbed her stake and raised it over her head.

“A slayer must be vigilant . . . “

Belle stopped she turned and glared at Nigel

“Will you shut up I’m trying to concentrate!”

Nigel looked at her uneasily.

“Oh . . . sorry.” He replied

Belle turned back and raised her stake again. The vamp grabbed her arm and tossed her over his head. She landed roughly on the ground and the vamp was on her a second later. Belle struggled as hard as she could but the vamp had her pinned down tight. She looked over to Nigel for assistance but he was busy taking noted. Belle could feel the vamps breath on her neck as he bared his fangs. Just then something grabbed the back of the vampire’s jacket. Rebecca pulled the vamp off belle and threw him. The vamp hit the ground hard but was on his feet a second later. Rebecca marched up, dodged a few of his punches, and then returned a few of her own. She kicked him in the chest forcing him against the wall of a mausoleum. She reached out her hand and formed a fireball. Rebecca tossed it, igniting the vamp, which exploded a moment later.

Belle looked over to Nigel annoyed.

“That was great help Nige,” she said, “really had my back.”

“You were doing fine before the interruption.” Nigel replied

Rebecca walked up to Nigel looking intently at him.

“Need to talk to you now.” She announced

“Well I’m a little busy Rebecca so if you’d like to check in with me tomorrow . . .”

“No time you can get your Slayer killed later.”

Belle looked over to Nigel in shock.

“You’re gonna get me killed?” she asked

“Of course not!” Nigel snapped back

“Then I’m wondering why you brought her to the graveyard with the heaviest concentration of vamps in this city?” Rebecca asked

Nigel looked at her annoyed

“Oh how would you know . . ?”

Rebecca folded her arms and flashed him a look.

“Oh, right, slayer instinct.”

Belle looked from Rebecca to Nigel.

“She’s a slayer?” she asked

“Was.” Rebecca replied

Nigel looked at Rebecca with contempt. Slowly he walked over to his slayer.

“Belle we are standing in the presence of the Divine One.”

“The Divine One huh?” Belle asked giving Rebecca the once over, “someone has tickets on themselves.”

“Don’t let her impertinence fool you she is a very powerful and very skilled warrior.”

Rebecca glared intensely at Nigel.

“Talk! Now!” she yelled

Nigel handed Belle her stake.

“I’ll be just a moment Belle wait here.” He said

Belle looked at the stake confused.

“What should I do?” she asked

Nigel thought for a moment

“Practice stabbing things.” He replied

Rebecca and Nigel walked over to a private location.

“Alright Rebecca this had better be important.” Nigel said

“I need you to call the council have them find Willow.” Rebecca replied

Nigel smiled smugly at her.

“I’m sorry Divine One but the use of council resources to do anything other then support the slayer is prohibited.”

“This is important.”

“More important then saving lives?”

Rebecca rolled her eyes in frustration. Nigel softened his approach.

“You do great work Rebecca you know that. Imagine the amount of people you would save if you worked with us instead of against us. It would be good to have someone else experienced around when there’s trouble. I know the slayer would appreciate it.”

Rebecca felt a small feeling of guilt cross her but she didn’t let it ruin her resolve.

“Just find Willow okay?”

Heidi was walking quietly down the street. It was a nice evening and the voices had been quiet all afternoon. Just then Mathew O’Donnell rushed around the corner. He was not looking where he was going and collided straight into Heidi.

“Oh my gosh I am so sorry,” Mathew said as he helped her to her feet, “Are you alright.”

Heidi nodded shyly then looked him in the eye. Her shocked expression began to worry him slightly

“Are you sure you’re alight?” he asked

Heidi didn’t reply she just simply stood and stared. Mathew slowly edged away from her then turned and walked away. Heidi watched him go.

“Suicide,” She said softly to herself, “Tomorrow.”
