Heidi Marsh sat alone in the cafeteria of Raleighfield High. Her long dark hair draped down over her face as the sleeves of her sweater draped over her hands. She stared at her sandwich wondering whether or not to eat it or feel sorry for it. This was a usual routine for her since most of the school stays away from her. Just then Britney Greene walked, with her entourage, into the cafeteria. She saw Heidi sitting on her own and they wandered over.
“Oh look,” Britney said sarcastically, “It’s Heidi and all her friends.”
On cue Britney's entourage laughed.
“Still talking to imaginary people?” Britney asked
“That’s the only people who want to hang out with a freak.” On of Britney’s friends continued
Slowly Heidi looked up. Her eyes opened wide in shock as she saw the Cheerleader. Britney was disgusted by this look.
“What are you staring at?” she asked viciously
“Car accident,” Heidi replied softly, “outside . . . Green Audi.”
“What is your problem freak?” She replied
Heidi didn’t reply she simply sat there and stared at Britney in shock.
“Come on lets go before we catch what she has.” Britney continued
Outside Britney and the others were walking to the gym. They were talking about how weird Heidi was when a Green Audi drove around the corner. The driver was trying to co-ordinate driving and holding a cup of coffee when the coffee spilled on his lap. He lost control of the vehicle and it skidded off the road. Before anybody had time to react it hit Britney at full force. The driver climbed out of the car in shock.
“Is she aright?” The driver asked
One of Britney’s friends checked her pulse.
“Oh my god,” she screamed, “she’s dead!”
In the doorway Heidi watched worried.
“Should have listened.” She said to herself.
~ The offices of Alore & Struts attorneys at law, Queens, New York City ~
“You have every right to be upset Mrs. Jonson,” Darrel Gibson said over the phone, “That man had no legal right to fire you because your child was sick. Listen I’m going to consult with some of my collogues then I am going to call you straight back alright? Have a good day Mrs. Jonson.”
Darrel hung up the phone and started to scribble down some notes. There was a light knocking on his office door.
“Come in.” Darrel said distracted
The door opened and Marcy walked in. she waited patiently until Darrel had finished his writing. He looked up and smiled at his secretary.
“Ah, Marcy, do you know if Bob is in at the moment?” he asked
“No Mr. Gibson he left a few minutes ago,” she replied, “also Mr. White just called he said he want’s to conference immediately.”
“Alright hold my calls I’ll be in the conference room.” Darrel Replied
Marcy nodded and headed out of the room. Darrel sighed and got to his feet. He walked out of his office, down the hall, and into the empty conference room. He closed to door behind him and walked to the end of the long table. There he picked up the receiver of the phone and dialed a ten digit number. He hung up and waited. Behind Darrel the doors of the cupboard opened by themselves casually Darrel stepped inside and closed the doors. He waited in the darkness for only a moment before a bright flash of white light surrounded him.
When Darrel opened his eyes again he was standing in the White Room. In front of him stood a man for about sixty.
“Darrel.” The old man said casually
“Mr. White.” Darrel replied
“I guessed you heard the news.”
“About the Trinity? Not so much heard as saw the fireworks.”
“Then you know why I called you.”
“Of course I do what I’m wondering is why it took you two years?”
“Most of our resources were destroyed in the fires.”
“But you did find it right?”
“We’ve narrowed the location to a single town,” Mr. White replied, “Raleighfield; it’s a small town just over the border of California.”
“Are all the pieces there?”
“We believe so. According to our research it hasn’t been touched in over two hundred years.”
“Good, makes our Job much easier.”
Mr. White looked at Darrel seriously
“As you well know Alore & Struts was never officially recognized by Wolfram and Hart as an asset but your importance was never ignored. You are our last chance to bring back the Trinity. Find the Signum Darrel”
“Won’t let you down sir,” Darrel replied
“Good man, oh, and one other thing,” Mr. White replied, “Before the death the Trinity left me specific instructions . . .”
Mr. White reached into his pocket and tossed Darrel the contents. Darrel caught it and examined it closely.
It was a small rectangular black box with a single button. Darrel looked up confused.
“The Trinity want you run the insurance policy on Rebecca Whitfield.”
“Why couldn’t Wolfram and Hart run it themselves?”
“We tried but there were . . . complications.”
“Do these complications involve a giant fireball running through the office?”
“Something like that.”
“Alright where do we find her?”
“Ironically her location is in the same town.”
“Oh my god!” Rebecca exclaimed, “I am so late!”
Rebecca dashed quickly though her house, she an Alex only just moved in two days ago which means the unpacked boxes were acting like an obstacle course. Alex stood back and watched. When Rebecca works her self up into one of her panics she tends to mover at her full Uber-Slayer speed which is dangerous if you stand in the wrong spot. Finding his moment Alex walked up to his panicked wife.
“Okay, Calm down,” He said softly, “Breath, Breath.”
Rebecca took a couple of deep breaths and steadied herself. Alex smiled at her.
“You’ll be fine.” He continued, “Just relax it’s not the end of the world.”
“But what if they don’t like me?” Rebecca asked, “What if they call me names? What if they call me stinky?”
Alex looked at Rebecca confused.
“Why would they call you stinky? You smell fine?”
“These are teenagers Alex they could call me anything.”
Alex put his hands on Rebecca's shoulders. He gazed deeply into her eyes in a confident manner.
“Listen to me Rebecca you’re going to do great. You’re going to be the best councilor Raleighfield high has ever seen.” He said
Rebecca smiled softly.
“Really?” she asked
“Absolutely.”
Alex kissed her lightly. Rebecca beamed happily at her husband.
“Alright, I think I’m ready, how do I look?”
Alex gazed her up and down. A worried look came across his face.
“Ah . . . Rebecca.” he said hesitantly
“What?”
“I think you might need to double check.”
Concerned Rebecca rushed into the bedroom where the full length mirror stood. She checked herself out. Rebecca was happy with the jacket and causal sweater she was wearing. She had pulled her hair back into a bun which she thought looked smart. She really didn’t see the problem.
That was until she looked down.
Rebecca frowned. From the waist down she was completely naked. In her hurry to get ready she had only gotten half dressed.
“Oh crap!” she exclaimed
“Not exactly the best first impression.” Alex commented handing her the rest of her clothes.
Rebecca quickly put the rest of her clothes on. Alex shook his head I wonder.
“You helped defeat and entire demon army I don’t know why this make you nervous.”
“The relationship with the demons was simple,” Rebecca explained, “they just wanted to kill me. With these kids I don’t know where I stand.”
“You’ll be fine. Just be yourself and everyone will love you.”
Belle Galloway stood on the starting blocks. She loosened her self up for the job at hand. When she was ready Belle leaned over and placed her hands on the ground. She looked up and stared down the running track ready.
“Go!” she heard from the side lines
Belle bolted. She felt the wind rush through her hair as she sprinted down the track faster and faster. She was amazed at herself this was the fastest she had ever moved before. The before and after school training practice session are finally paying off. She crossed the finish line slowed down to a stop. Breathing heavily she looked up at Nolan happily.
“How did I do?” she asked
Nolan Galloway, Belle’s brother, looked at the stopwatch and frowned. He glared at his sister angrily
“Sit down!” he yelled pointing to the bench near the track.
Belle sat on the bench as Nolan stood over her arms folded.
“What?” she asked
“Do I need to go though the talk again?” he asked
Belle looked at Nolan in confusion but Nolan wasn’t buying it.
“What are you taking Belle?” he asked
“What?” she replied in shock, “I’m not taking anything?”
“Is it steroids do you know what that does to your body?”
“I swear I haven’t touched any drugs”
“Oh I see,” Nolan replied, “so you suddenly running three times as fast as yesterday is a natural thing?”
“What the hell are you talking about?”
Nolan showed her the stopwatch. Belle looked at it in surprise. Then slowly a smiled crossed her face.
“You started the watch halfway through my sprint again didn’t you?” she smirked
“This isn’t funny Belle. You think you’re going to the Olympics if you’re not clean?”
“I didn’t touch anything, god, why aren’t you listening to me?”
“So what happened out there?”
Belle glared.
“Look Nolan, it’s great you wanting to be my coach and everything but you have to listen to your athlete occasionally. The only think I can think of is that weird feeling I had last night before I went to bed.”
“And that’s it?”
“I swear.”
Watching from across the track was Nigel Wincroft. He had only started as librarian a few weeks ago but that was mainly his cover for what he truly was.
He was a watcher.
And damned lucky to get this position it had been two years and no slayer. For the first six month there were no issues. The demons all went into hiding after the destruction of Wolfram and Hart but when the news of the slayers vanishing hit the population they soon returned to their old ways. As it turned out Goddess Willows theory was correct. The Two original slayers, Buffy summers and Faith Lehane acted like batteries for the Generation S slayer activation process. When Faith was killed the power was cut in half meaning that the process took longer and the gap between one slayer dieing and another begin called grew exponentially. When Buffy was killed during the giant battle in the Nevada desert known colloquially as ‘The Battle of Trinity’ the power was severed completely and no new slayers were called leaving the world without a slayer.
The only who nearly fit the description was the Divine One, Rebecca Whitfield, but after the Prophecy of the Divine was fulfilled she decided to stay away from the demon world. The constant badgering of the Divine One from the new council of watchers caused may of its ally’s to turn away from them and their new head watcher Rodger Stone. This left the world defenseless and slayerless . . .
Until now
“Belle Galloway?” Nigel asked as he approached the pair
The teenagers looked up at Nigel curiously. His slicked back hair and tidy suits gave him a proper, yet slightly nervous, appearance.
“Yes?” belle asked
“You’ve been chosen.” He replied
“Thank god,” belle said in relief, “I though Coach Miller would never make up his mind. So what position am I in?”
Nigel was thrown off by the misinterpretation. He stood anxiously and tried to think of a way to address the problem.
“Ah . . . No that’s not what I’m talking about. You’ve been chosen . . .” He replied
“When do you think the coach is going post the list?” Belle asked Nolan
“He usually puts them up by the end of this week.” Nolan replied
Nigel stared at the both of them. This seemed a lot harder then it should be. Tentatively he raised his hand.
“Ah, excuse me, I hadn’t finished talking.” He said
Belle and Nolan looked at him.
“Oh sorry,” Belle apologized, “what did you want to talk about.”
Nigel looked at Nolan nervously.
“Can we talk in private?” he asked
“Hey! What you have to say to her you can say to me!” Nolan snapped
“Alright, Belle you have been chosen.”
“For what?” she asked
“To hunt the vampires.” Nigel replied
Belle and Nolan exchanged a glace.
“Right,” Nolan replied sarcastically, “The vampires. ‘Cause we need to hunt them.”
“You are the Slayer.” Nigel continues, “In every generation a slayer is born she alone with hunt the vampires and the demons . . . well that was until recently when there were thousands of slayers but that get a little messy and it’s hard to explain. All you need to know is that it’s your job to kill vampires.”
“Okay . . . we’re going to go now.” Belle said as she and Nolan edge their way off the bench.
Nigel sighed. He looked down and noticed that Nolan left the stop watch on the bench. He picked it up and looked at it.
“This is a good time for a sprinter is it not?” he asked
Belle looked at him curiously but kept her distance.
“Yeah.” she replied suspiciously
“I’m not really that knowledgeable about track and field but this is close to breaking the world record right?”
“So?”
“Have you also noticed that your strength has increased?”
“I’ve been working out. I have to stay fit you know.”
“I suppose,” Nigel replied, “I mean it’s not like you’ve been having nightmares.”
Belle looked at him shocked.
“How do you know about them?”
Nigel slowly walked towards Belle.
“You’ve been having them for the last few days now and they’re all the same. Women fighting monsters and people with strange faces.”
Belle stared at Nigel in complete suspicion.
“Who are you?”
“My name is Nigel Wincroft, I am your watcher.”
Belle felt overwhelmed. This couldn’t be true it sounded so crazy.
“Meet me after school in the library. I will explain everything.” Nigel said seriously
Out the front of the school a car pulled up inside Rebecca sat nervously.
“I don’t know why you wouldn’t let me portal my way here it would have been a lot quicker.” She commented
Alex flashed her a look.
“And how would you explain that?”
Rebecca shrugged playfully as she smirked.
“I’m the councilor I’ll just say that they’re all crazy.”
Alex laughed. He kissed his wife lovingly
“Have a good day at work.”
Rebecca stepped out of the car and it pulled away. She sighed heavily and made her way inside. Near the doorway Simon Crawford stood. He’d been the principal at Raleighfield high for the last five years and loved his job immensely. He noticed Rebecca looking lost near the doorway and called her over. Rebecca scampered over quickly
“I’m so sorry.” She said
“For what?” Simon asked
“Being late.”
“Late? I said be in by ten. It’s about quarter past nine.”
“Oh. Then I guess I’m early.”
“Always a good thing come on I’ll show you to your office.”
Simon led Rebecca through the winding halls of the school until they reached a door. Happily Simon let her in.
“Here you are.” He said
Rebecca walked in and looked around the small office. It had a cramp empty feeling at the moment but Rebecca could fix that.
“Mostly students are going to be sent to you but there will be some who come on their own,” Simon explained, “You’re first student isn’t until ten so take a moment and wander around the school. Get familiar with it.”
“Alright. Thanks Simon.” Rebecca replied
Nigel was placing some books back on the shelf when he heard the library door open. Happily he stopped what he was doing and wandered out to the front.
“Hello how can I help . . ?“He started
Nigel stopped in his tracks when he saw who was standing in front of him. Rebecca looked at him nervously
“Hi, sorry I’m new here, just trying to get the lay of the land.” She said
“Rebecca?” Nigel asked, “Rebecca Whitfield?”
“Wow memos get around here fast,” Rebecca replied in surprised.
Nigel looked at her in relief.
“Oh this is most fortuitous,” He said, “You can help me.”
“I really don’t have much time. And I’m not that good at stacking books.”
“What? Oh, no I don’t need help with that. Come by this afternoon.”
Rebecca looked at him suspiciously.
“What’s happening this afternoon?”
“The slayers start her training.”
Suddenly the penny dropped. Nigel excited straitens up some papers on the front counter.
“This is good luck indeed. You can help me train the slayer and the both of you can go out on . . .”
He looked over when he heard the library door close. Quickly Nigel followed her.
“Slow down!” Nigel called out
“I am not doing this.” Rebecca replied angrily
“You have no choice Rebecca this you are a slayer.”
Rebecca stopped. She turned and glared at him.
“No I’m not.”
“Well, yes, of course I’ve heard about the Divine One powers you hold but still this is your calling.”
Rebecca folded her arms.
“You know for someone who claims to be a watcher you don’t pay much attention.”
“This is your calling.” Nigel said more insistently
“My calling ended when I fulfilled the prophecy!”
With that Rebecca turned and started to walk away. Nigel looked at her angrily.
“You have no idea where you are do you?” He snapped, “this place, this town, it’s on a Hellmouth.”
“So? You said you have a slayer.”
“This isn’t just any Hellmouth Divine One! This is the Sunnydale Hellmouth.”
Rebecca looked at him cautiously.
“That was sealed decades ago.”
“You can’t seal a Hellmouth you can only close one of its openings,” Nigel explained, “it’s like having a leaky dam. Of you fill in one crack eventually the water pressure is going to find another one.”
“You’re seriously telling me the Hellmouth moved?”
“There’s more. The council thinks that something else is stored here. At that something is manipulating the hellmouths energy making it stronger.”
“In what way?” Rebecca asked
“Don’t you feel it?” Nigel asked, “The unusual spark in the air. We’re facing more then mere vampires and demons there are going to be innocents who are affected by this strange force.”
Nigel walked up to her insistently.
“We need you Rebecca. Something tells me that it’s going to take more then one slayer to stop whatever is coming.”
Rebecca looks up at the clock. This conversation had eaten most of her free time and she had to head back to her office.
“I have to go.” Rebecca said
Rebecca turned and headed to her office Nigel watched her leave.
“So what’s your answer?” he asked
“You already have it.” Rebecca replied
Heidi sat patiently inside Rebecca's office. She hugged her knees tightly as she waited for the councilor to arrive. A moment later Rebecca entered her office she saw the shy girl sitting in front of her desk and smiled.
“Hi there,” she said in a friendly tone, “sorry I’m late I had a problem . . . with the library.”
Rebecca sat behind her desk and pulled out her notebook. She consulted what was already written.
“Heidi marsh?” she asked
Heidi nodded slowly.
“The principal tells me that you don’t hang out with anyone.”
Again Heidi nodded.
“Don’t you have any friends?”
Heidi shook her head.
“Why not you seem like a nice girl.”
“People think I’m a freak”
“Why do people think that?”
“Because people talk to me in my head,” Heidi replied quietly.
Rebecca looked at the girl in concern. She scribbled down some notes.
“What do these people say?”
“They tell me stuff before it happens,” Heidi replied
This got Rebecca's attention. She carefully examined the girl for any sign of demon but couldn’t find anything outwardly.
“What sought of things?”
“Like when people die.”
Rebecca frowned. This did explain why the girl stayed by herself. This didn’t make Rebecca feel any better. Heidi looked up at Rebecca curiously.
“Their telling me stuff about you now.” she said
“What are they saying about me?” Rebecca asked
“They call you a name.”
“What is it?”
Heidi took in a deep breath. She seemed almost reluctant to let it out.
“Divine One.” she said finally
Rebecca had trouble hiding her shocked expression. Heidi continued to stare at her.
“They say I’m supposed to help you and . . . and the other one.”
“Who . . . who's other one?” Rebecca asked
“The slayer.” Heidi replied, “Something bad is going to happen . . . and it’s going to hurt a lot of people.”
