“Are you sure you’re willing to do this? We still haven’t worked out the issue of the chip, and you’ll have to have the surgery,” Buffy told him.
“And you aren’t going to just pop back to being human. I think the transfer will make you pretty sick for a few days, it’s why most vampires don’t do it. It just isn’t worth it.
I’m not trying to dissuade you, but I do want you to know what you’re jumping into,” Willow said nervously. She did want him to know the truth, but she was afraid if she said too much about how horrible the book had said the transformation could be, Spike would refuse to do it. There was still the possibility of Angel doing it, but they would have to track him down, which would take time they didn’t have.
To her relief, Spike nodded. “I’m sure. I want to help her, and I’m willing to do it for her, but… I don’t want to be the one to tell Dawn I’ll be feeding from her. That part I don’t want to do at all, but I will if it’s the only way.
And the chip? I can stand the pain long enough to get a few drops at least.”
Buffy nodded, and then threw her arms around him, resting her chin on his shoulder.
“Thank you, Spike. I’m going to go talk to her now, and when I’m done, you should come do it. I know this is sudden, but she doesn’t have much time, and we need to do it as soon as possible.
“I doubt the doctors will operate on you immediately, either. They’ll want to do tests and stuff.”
Buffy let him go, and stood up.
“Thank you,” she whispered again as she and Willow headed out of the living room and up the stairs.
Spike remained on the sofa, and studied his hands, an unfamiliar feeling growing in the pit of his stomach.
Was that… Fear? He couldn’t believe himself. Scared over being human for a couple of days, what was wrong with him?
He was still sitting there, staring at his hands, when Willow came back down.
“Hey,” she said nervously, standing next to the sofa and looking uncomfortable.
He noticed she was holding a pair of small, silver scissors, and wondered what she needed them for.
“Buffy told Dawnie, and, um, they’re ready for you, but I need some of, um, your hair, for the spell.” She said it quickly, and he had no idea why she was so flustered, but he nodded and bent his head towards her. She pulled a small baggie from her pocket, and sniped off a small section in the back where he couldn’t see it.
“It’ll grow back,” she told him as she placed the snippet of white blond hair into the baggie.

He headed upstairs, and found Dawn alone in her room, her face streaked with tears.
“Red said you were…” his voice trailed off when he saw her crying, and he almost turned around and went back downstairs. He didn’t want to do this to her after all. It didn’t matter what they did to him physically, but this was too much.
Damn soul, there were times like these he wished he didn’t have it.
“How do you want to do it?” Dawn asked timidly, brushing the tears away and getting straight to the point. She could sense his indecision, and tried to make it easier on him.
She had been completely against this earlier, until Buffy had told her how life threatening her disease was, and she was finally willing to let Spike do this.
Spike, on the other hand, seemed to be cooling off to the idea.
“I’ve never done this before, you know,” she told him as he stepped farther into the room.
Spike finally smiled at her, and came close enough to brush a strand of long hair out of her face. He was acting as though she were going to bite him, instead of the other way around.
“It’s all right, I’m glad you haven’t. Here,” he said, scooping her up again.
“How ‘bout you sit here on my lap, ok?” He held her close to him, protectively, and sat down on her bed, out of place with his black clothes against her pink pillows and purple bedspread.
“Comfy?” he asked, trying not to think about how stupid he sounded as he got settled.
Dawn nodded quickly and shut her eyes. She didn’t want to see him once he changed.
“As much as I’ll ever be,” she told him, trying to relax in his arms to make it easier, but caught herself tensing up every time he moved.
He bent over her neck and hid his face from her as he morphed into demon mode.
“I’ll try to make this quick, love, for both our sakes,” he whispered against the smooth, white skin of her neck, right before he bit her.
Horrible pain exploded in his skull courtesy of the chip, and he wanted nothing more than to let go of her so it would stop, but he managed to keep sucking the wonderful, sweet blood from her veins.
He felt himself growing dizzy, and he knew he was close to passing out, but he didn’t know how much blood he needed for it to make a difference.
He took one last, long gulp before the pain took over, and he fell into darkness.
