The Homecoming
"Hey, check that out!" Andrea Sullivan pointed to someone who had just entered Neo.
Brigid looked over to the main entryway and shrugged as she pushed her light brown hair out of her eyes. "So, don't you think he's a little old for you."
Andrea rolled her eyes. "Don't you get it? He's a major hotty, and I think I'm about to make it his lucky night."
The small blonde walked over to talk to the newcomer, as Brigid stayed behind at the table to study him. He was cute, but she could feel the darkness surrounding him as if it was a tangible thing. No, the guy was bad news, and considering what Brigid knew about Sunnydale, it was probably a good idea to avoid him.
She stood up and absently smoothed her dress. Her father hadn't even noticed her walk out of the house in the leopard print spandex, which had worried Brigid. Usually her dad was a lot more on the ball then this, especially when it came to spandex dresses and public places, but he hadn't been the same since he'd gotten that strange phone call from Kenya yesterday. She glanced at her watch, and saw she'd been here for over an hour. [Perfect, I've put in enough time at the meat market, and now I can go home.], she thought as she lifted her leather bomber jacket from her seat and took off for the exit.
Brigid didn't notice the stares as she passed by. The tiny fey child who had come with her mother to Sunnydale to start a new life had grown into a beautiful young woman. She strode across the dance floor to the exit as young men eyed her. One group in particular watched her movements with something other than teenage hormonal lust. They followed her out of the club.
* * *
Brigid felt them behind her as she walked down the streets. Three of them, if the cadence of their footfalls were any indication. She had lived in Sunnydale too long, and knew to much to believe they were just stalkers or criminals. She started glancing around for anything, glad that she had poked through her father's diaries.
"Okay, guys. I've had a long night and I really don't need..." She turned and saw the lead vampire ready to pounce. [Aw, Hell!], she swore to herself and dodged the first blow. Brigid slid into a defensive stance and started looking for a way out. [Damn! There hasn't been a vampire attack in 4 years, and they pick my bad night to come back.]
Someone else came out of the shadows and tackled another of her attackers. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the new combatant had a stake in hand. [Great! Someone is prepared.] She dodged again and landed a round house kick in the first vampire's midsection. Finally she found a broken branch and dove for it, coming up as soon as she grabbed it. Her opponent eyed her with a new respect. She grinned mercilessly. [Having second thoughts are we? That's what you get for attacking a Watcher's kid!] The vampire seemed torn between fear and hunger, but after a microsecond hunger won out. He made another mad dash for her to find himself with a large chunk of wood protruding from his chest. His ashes hit the ground before he could utter a sound.
She saw her rescuer finish off the second demon and she threw herself into a dive roll. She came up with another branch then took a menacing step toward the last vampire, who broke and ran.
She brushed herself off, and ran fingers through her hair. The man walked up to her; she realized it was the same guy Andrea had pointed out in Neo. Up close she saw Andrea's description of him as a "hotty" was totally wrong. He was beautiful, Dear Goddess Bright! She started adjusting her dress and fixing her hair. "Uhm, thanks for the assist." She knew the smile she was wearing made her look goofy, but something about this guy made her insides melt. [It's the darkness you felt, remember?], a small rational part of her mind yelled.
"No problem." He returned her smile with a grin of his own that made the cool autumn evening heat up.
"Do you do this often? Or was this just a one time thing?"
"Do you mean killing vampires or rescuing beautiful and capable young ladies in distress?" There was a glimmer of mischief in his dark eyes, and a wry note in his gorgeous voice. [Isn't there anything about this guy that isn't perfect?]
"Both actually. I mean, not that I'm ungrateful, but it is rather odd..."
"Sunnydale's an odd sorta place. Well, I should go." He smirked at her. "You're welcome." He began walking away giving her a magnificent view of his...
"Uh, wait? Will I see you again?"
He turned around, but continued walking, "Count on it." The stranger gave her a jaunty wave; then disappeared into the night. Brigid ran the rest of the way home, hoping that her dad was still in not noticing mode. Giles had been protecting her from the supernatural since the vampires had taken her mother. Brigid, though, had other ideas. It had been the only way to make the nightmares stop. So when she was old enough, she began sneaking in to read the Watchers diaries, and many of the other books. She had also started to take classes in Tai Chi, Taekwondo, and other martial arts. Her excuse to her dad was practical self defense. Now she had the weapons to hunt vampires. And it seemed her time had come.
