"Why do you think she'll come?" the First said, with a grin, to Spike as he dangled there on the wall of the cave.
"She believes in me." Spike said quietly and then closed his one good eye.
"She won't." the First laughed, it was in its favorite form in which it enjoyed tormenting Spike, Buffy. The First then called an ubervamp over to beat Spike as it left.
"You know you don't have to go through this." A man's voice said out of nowhere. When Spike opened his eye he saw a medium height man with an off-white sweater and a pair of khaki slacks standing there. He had blue eyes and light brown hair.
"You're not getting anything out of me." Spike said angrily as he looked at the man who he didn't recognize.
"I'm not here to get anything out of you, I'm here to help you. My name's Daniel Jackson." Daniel said as he stood near Spike.
"Bloody right. If you're not it put your hand on my shoulder." Spike said angrily as he moved his shoulder to point out what Daniel was to touch, but as he did a pain shot through his arm and he winced a little.
"I'm afraid I can't but I'm not that thing that's been torturing you. Before you ask I am dead, but I can't change my form like that creature." Daniel said with a caring look in his eye that Spike didn't notice.
"You a ghost then, mate?" Spike asked cautiously.
"I'm not a ghost. I'm a friend though. I can help." Daniel said as he paced back and forth.
"How are you going to help me if you can't cut these chains free?" Spike asked eying the chains he was hanging from.
"I can help you ascend." Daniel replied.
"Help me what?" Spike asked confused.
"Ascend. You'll ascend to a higher being. That's what I am, I'm ascended." Daniel said.
"What the heck is that?" Spike asked.
"Ascended, well it means that you'll become something higher. I think you've earned the right to ascend." Daniel said trying to smile a little.
"How have I earned that right?" Spike asked trying not to laugh.
"You've helped your fellow man and done what others might not do especially in your case." Daniel said seriously.
"Think you're forgetting the whole I'm a vampire thing." Spike said snidely.
"I know you are." Daniel said and then suddenly disappeared.
"Hey, mate, where'd you go?" Spike asked looking around the cavern.
"Where'd who go? Is my poor Spike going crazy again?" it said in the form of Buffy.
"Shut up." Spike said angrily and then closed his eye in a small hope of being able to escape the place he was in, whether it be through this ascended thing Daniel was talking about, Buffy saving him, through some small chance of sleep or by death even.
Buffy kneeled in front of the weapons chest looking for the weapons she was going to teach the potentials to use. She knew they were good and could learn fast but she wanted to make sure they wouldn't chop anything off, that they weren't supposed to, by the axe. As she kneeled there her thoughts wandered to Spike, and how she was going to save him. Giles had come in the night before and was helping her and Willow, Dawn, Anya, and even Xander were helping to find him, but the potentials questioned her on her reasons for wanting to save the vampire and as many times she explained that he was a good vampire and that he had saved her and her friend's lives many times, they still didn't completely understand.
"Buffy?" a voice behind her said, knocking her out of her thoughts. When she turned to look she saw a kind looking man, but she knew better than to judge by the appearance.
"Who are you?" Buffy asked firmly as she stood up, the axe in her hand.
"I'm Daniel Jackson. I'm here to help." Daniel said and before Buffy replied she called for Giles.
"What is it?" Giles asked worriedly as he came running in and then he saw Daniel.
"Who are you?" Giles asked as he took off his glasses and wiped them.
"As I told Buffy here, my name is Daniel Jackson." Daniel said and then Giles reached over to touch him.
"You're the First." Giles said angrily when he found he was able to reach right through Daniel.
"No I'm not. I'm ascended. About a year ago I was exposed to a deadly amount of radiation and I died from it, well kind of. A friend of mine, Jack O'Neill, showed me that I should go with a being called Oma Desalla. She was the one that helped me ascend. I bet if you look in those books of your Giles, you'll find information on her and a people called the Ancients." Daniel said as he eyed the books on the table.
"I'll do that." Giles said cautiously.
"How are going to help us if you can't fight anything?" Buffy asked, she didn't trust Daniel too much and he picked that up.
"I can help you find your friend, but that's if he wishes to be found. I've given him the choice of ascending, where he will help me." Daniel said carefully and Buffy suddenly knew he was talking about Spike.
"Where is he?" Buffy asked with a worried look on her face.
"I will tell you soon, but I have to go. I'll be back." Daniel said and he suddenly disappeared.
"Can we trust him, Giles?" Buffy asked turning to Giles who was wiping his glasses clean again.
"I think we need to do some research on all the stuff he said but if he really can help us find Spike then I say we can." Giles said and then headed over to look at his books.
"Buffy, who was that? I heard you and Giles talking to someone." Dawn said as Buffy came into the kitchen.
"I'll tell you later, but I need you to go get Willow and tell her we need to do some research." Buffy said and Dawn ran outside where Willow was sitting.
