Angel didn't know what to do with himself. He was so angry that he could have torn down the walls of the old mansion with his bare hands. He didn't know if he was angrier with Buffy for tearing him to pieces or with himself for not just saying that he didn't love her. In his heart he knew that he wasn't angry with Buffy, but he also knew that he never could have told her that he didn't love her, because he did. He always would. Mixed in with his feelings of anger was an unbearable sorrow. He had just lost his only friend. He had just lost the woman he would have risked anything and everything for. He remembered her words, "What I want from you I can never have." What was it exactly that she wanted from him? If she would only tell him, he'd find a way to give it to her. He needed to find out.

As soon as the sun set, Angel ran as fast as he could to Buffy's house. He climbed a tree to her bedroom window and waited for her to go to her room. When she finally appeared, he began knocking on her window. She looked at him.

"Go away Angel."

"Buffy, I just need to ask you one thing," he said, pleading with her.

"I said go away!"

He couldn't take it any more. Normally, out of sheer politeness, he would have waited for her to invite him in. It wasn't necessary because he'd already been invited in once. But now, he needed her to answer his question. He pulled open the window, climbed in, and faced her.

"You said that what you wanted from me you could never have," he said without waiting for her to respond to his rude entrance. "Then tell me what you want." Buffy began crying. It killed Angel to know that he had made her cry, but he needed an answer. "What do you want? Tell me!" His voice had risen, and now he was yelling. "What is it that you want?"

"I want to be able to be with you without having to worry about you losing your soul!" she yelled back. "I want a normal relationship! That's what I want! Now get out!"

Angel locked his eyes with Buffy's for one last moment before he leaped out the window to the ground below. Buffy watched him, with tears streaming down her face, as he ran away from her house.

"Buffy, is everything all right up there?" Buffy's mom called from downstairs. "I thought I heared shouting."

"Everything's fine, Mom. I just got some talk show when I turned on the radio." Buffy thought.

"Are you sure you're okay?"

"Yeah Mom, I'm fine."

"All right."

Buffy collapsed on her bed and cried herself to sleep.
