Chapter 2: O Little Town of Bethlehem

Disclaimer: Not mine.

~

Something on the news channel caught Xander’s eye as he reached for the controller.

The camera was currently focused on a man putting up Christmas lights around his house.
A cheerful commentary, something along the lines of, “…as people are putting up their last minute decorations, we see…”, was suddenly drowned out by a cascade of notes, as the man putting up lights paused and turned, singing slowly,

"O little town of Sunnydale,
How creepy does it seem.
Above the tossing, nightmare sleep,
Never one good dream.

Thy dark streets so chilling,
The everlasting gloom.
The hopes and fears of all my years,
Now whispering of doom..."

The tune of “O Little Town of Bethlehem” coming from the TV had attracted Buffy’s attention, and everyone else in the living room had also turned their attention to the TV.

“Wow,” commented Xander, “Sunnydale does seem a little dreary, doesn’t it. It’s like they just noticed or something.”
Then he paused, and added, “You know, why does the random burst of song seem so familiar…?”

Simultaneously, everyone made the connection.

“Sweet!” Anya burst out, in annoyed realization, as everyone suddenly had a pained expression on their face.

Willow and Jenny stuck their heads in the living room.
“What’s sweet?” asked Willow first.

“Sweet.” Anya repeated, “He’s back. Remember? Dances and songs and bursts of flame…”
Anya turned to Xander suspiciously. “What were you unsure of this time?”
Buffy was looking at him too, looking partly uncertain and partly accusing.
Xander got up, and denied hastily, “I didn’t do anything! D’ya think I want to be made Dancing Queen?”

Suddenly, all of them turned towards the TV, and watched in horror as the man’s voice squeaked an impossibly high note, and every Christmas light around him exploded. The man was blasted to the ground, and then combusted in a spiral of red and green smoke and flame.

“Holy crap.” Xander said hoarsely.

Vehement swearing was heard around the room.
Giles sat down and took off his glasses, cleaning them carefully.

Buffy, shaking her head in disbelief and horror at the thought of something demony ruining her Christmas, asked shakily, “I thought he was gone for good. He did say he’d see us in Hell right? He couldn’tve just waited a little bit longer?!”

Everyone gaped at Buffy.

Buffy looked a little put out, and mumbled, “What? Have some holiday spirit, people.”
