Giles, Wesley, and Dumbledore all stared into the pensive in Dumbledore’s office.
“Now let’s see,” Dumbledore said, taking his wand and stirring it around in the pensive, “Where did I put that memory? It’s not here.”
“Are you sure?” Wesley asked.
“Yes.”
“Perhaps you were mistaken and you’ve never seen the mark before,” Giles said.
“No, the memories just not here.”
“Where else would it be?” Giles asked.
“Maybe someone stole it,” Wesley suggested.
“Someone breaking into Hogwarts?” Giles asked, skeptically, “This place is a fortress.”
“I wouldn’t be the first time,” Dumbledore said, “Right, now I’m more worried about who and when they’re coming back.”
*******************
Dumbledore stood at his podium in the front of the great hall, which was now lavishly decorated with holiday decorations as the students and teachers waited intently for his speech to begin, “Good evening everyone. I know you are all excited as the holidays are drawing near and I actually have some more good news. Hogwarts is going to host another Yule Ball. WE thought with all the recent events everyone could use some extra holiday cheer.”
The entire room broke into cheer and began to talk. Ron leaned over and whispered to Harry, “Bloody hell, that means I’m going to have to wear that awful robe again.”
“I’ll let you borrow one of mine,” Harry told him.
“God bless you,” he said with a laugh.
“This is great,” Dawn said, “So Hermione who do you want to ask you?” Dawn knew the answer but she hoped Ron would jump at the chance to ask her.
“I don’t know,” Hermione said with a coy smile, understanding Dawn’s question.
“Hermione?”
“Yes, Ron.”
“We could….go,” Ron offered but instead of coming of as interested he sounded like he felt obligated to ask her, “together.”
“Well, I wouldn’t want to put you out,” Hermione said with biting sarcasm and with that she left the table in a huff.
“Hermione!” Ron yelled, running after her.
Dawn just shook her head, “So who are you going to ask Harry?”
“Maybe Cho, do you think she’d go with me?”
“She’d be crazy not to,” Dawn said.
********************
“Hermione! Stop!” Ron yelled.
“Why?!”
“Because we need to talk.”
“We have nothing to talk about!”
“Yes, we do! I asked you to the dance and you yelled at me that’s not normal!”
“Normal?!” Hermione screamed in frustration.
“Why are you mad?”
“You didn’t ask me because you wanted to go with me you asked me because you felt sorry for me. Poor old Hermione, no one will ever ask her out because she’s….”
“Beautiful.”
“What?”
“Don’t make me say it again.”
“Ron!”
“I said you’re beautiful and I asked you because I like you and I want to go with you! So there! Oh and this too,” Ron said and with that he grabbed her and kissed her hard on the lips. At first Hermione was taken back in surprise and she almost pulled away but she soon stopped herself and began to kiss him back. When they broke apart they were both searching for much needed air.
“Wow,” Ron said, “We are going to the ball together right?”
Hermione just laughed in response.
******************
“Dawn?” Connor called to her as she walked down the hall.
“Hey.”
“Hey,” Connor said, dreading the awkward silence that was beginning to fill the conversation, “So did anyone ask you to the Yule Ball yet?”
“Yeah,” she said and Connor’s face fell in response, “But I said no.”
“Oh, how come?”
“I’m waiting for someone else.”
“Oh, who?”
“You! So would you please just ask me out already!” Connor laughed, “It’s not funny.”
“Sorry, would you like to go with me?”
“No.”
“But you just said….”
“Meet me in the Gryffindor common room at 7 don’t be late,” Dawn said with a smile and with that she walked off to class.
*****************
“So how do I look?” Hermione said with a twirl. She was wearing a beautiful periwinkle blue dress that hung slightly off her shoulders and her hair was done in a fashionable up-do.
“Perfect,” Dawn gushed, “What about me?”
“You look great,” she said as she looked at Dawn, who was wearing a dark red strapless dress with beading. She also had her hair in an up-do created out of ringlets of curls.
“Yeah, Connor’s going lose it. I’m not sure what it but…” Dawn trailed off and both girls shared a laugh.
“I’m so glad you came to Hogwarts this year. It’s nice to have another girl around.”
*******************
“So how do I look?” Ron asked, nervously.
“Good,” Connor said, as he fixed his bow tie.
“You didn’t even look,” Ron whined.
“Ron, its Hermione. She’s seen you covered in Basilisk guts,” Harry told him, “You’d look good to her even if you were wearing your other dress robes.”
“What other robes?” Connor asked.
“You don’t want to know,” Ron said.
“Oh but I do.”
“Here,” Harry said, opening Ron’s trunk and throwing the robes to Connor.
“You’re kidding right, Connor said holding them up, “You actually wore these?”
“Yes.”
“Did you take pictures?”
“No!” Ron said, tackling him to the floor, all of them laughing hysterically.
***************
“Wow, Connor and Ron said in unison as they saw Hermione and Dawn come down the stairs.
“You guys look great,” Harry said, since Connor and Ron were still in shock.
“Yeah,” Ron and Connor agreed as they began to compliment the girls and then they all began to go downstairs.
“So Harry whatever happened with Cho?” Dawn asked.
“Nothing, I asked someone else.”
“Who?” Hermione asked.
“You didn’t tell me you had a date! I’m your best friend and you didn’t tell me!” Ron said, offended.
“So who’d you ask?” Connor said, ignoring Ron.
“Ginny.”
“What?!” Ron said in shock, “You like my baby sister!”
“Ron!” Hermione said, hitting him.
“Ow, what was that for?”
“She’s 15. I think she can go on a date.”
“But with my best friend? Well, I like you better then her last boyfriend,” Ron said.
“It’s not like you had a say anyway,” Ginny said, walking over and taking Harry’s arm.
****************
“Hey, do you feel like taking a walk?” Connor asked Dawn after they had finished dancing. So far the night had been amazing. The great hall had been beautifully decorated and the enchanted ceiling showed the night sky, full of stars. Snow was dispersed here and there over the floor and small white lights decorated the walls. There was also the occasional mistletoe or wreath and in off to one side was the Christmas tree.
“Yeah,” Dawn said as they left and went onto the grounds hand in hand.
They passed Harry and Ginny, who were talking as they left.
“Hey, look mistletoe,” Ginny said and then realized what it meant, “Oh it doesn’t matter anyway I’m the only one standing underneath it.” This was true. Ginny was underneath the mistletoe and Harry was a few feet away.
“Now you’re not,” he said, stepping under it and giving her a gentle kiss.
***************
“Better then your other school?” Dawn asked.
“Much,” Connor said with a smile as they sat down on a bench outside. Dawn shivered a little, “Here,” he put his coat around her.
“Thanks,” Dawn said as they both began to lean in closer and that’s when they kissed.
“Thanks,” Connor said with a smile and a laugh.
