After all that arguing, Buffy and Angel were both very tired. They decided to try and get some sleep and then talk more in the morning. They need time to rest and time to think about things. Angel offered his bed to Buffy and said he would sleep on the couch, but she thought it wouldn’t be a good idea so she took the couch. He gave in only because he figured it was either that, or she would just go somewhere else and he didn’t want her to have to do that.
Both of them were exhausted but neither one could sleep a wink. Angel just laid in his bed tossing around the reasons why he had the oracles change him back. After he did it, he never really doubted that it was the right thing to do but with Buffy here, seeing how upset she was, the things she said, he began to wonder if maybe they could have found another way. He thought, maybe he should have just talked to her and they could figure something out together. He went on like this for the rest of the night sleeping no more then an hour collectively the whole night.
Buffy also got about the same amount of sleep as Angel did. She thought about what she was doing there. She didn’t know what she had hoped to accomplish by going to see Angel. Yes, she yelled at him, got her feelings about what happened out in the open but now what? She didn’t know what she expected would happen next. Nothing has changed. Angel is still a vampire cursed with a soul and they still can’t be together no matter how much they love each other. She had almost wished that she didn’t come at all. What was the point?
The next morning Buffy decided she should probably just go. There was nothing else she could do, or say that would change anything. She got up a few minutes after sunrise and folded the sheets and blanket she had used on the couch. She didn’t want to deal with a long and painful goodbye so she just left, not waking Angel.
About an hour after Buffy had left Angel got up. As he was getting up he was tossing around ideas of what to say to Buffy. Last night was confusing and awkward and he knew today would be even worse. He thought about what he could say to convince her that he did the right thing by going back to how he was, even though he wasn’t fully convince of that himself. He thought about how he could make her feel better, ease her pain, even just a little, but nothing. He couldn’t think of anything because he knew that nothing he could say would make it right.
He finally got up out of bed and got dressed, he had to face her sometime, but when he went into the living room she was gone. He saw the sheets and blanket neatly folded on the couch she slept on but no sign of Buffy anywhere. He felt so many conflicting emotions all at once. He felt relieved because he didn’t know what to say in the first place and yet upset that they left things the way they did. He felt angry that she would leave without saying goodbye but yet happy that she spared him the pain of it.
For a while he just stood there and stared at the folded sheets and blanket. He couldn’t even imagine how she must have felt when she left. They hadn’t accomplished anything. She came all the way here to tell him that she knew about the last day and then that was it. For a moment he thought about going after her but then he realized that he wouldn’t have any idea of what to say. It was too late.
He walked into the kitchen and that’s when he saw it. Sitting there on the table was a piece of paper with writing on it. It was a note that Buffy had left for him, it read…
Dear Angel,
I’m sorry for coming here. Yes, I remembered what happened but that doesn’t really change anything. I’m not even really sure why I came. I don’t know what I hoped to accomplish. We come from two different world and you were right the first time. Our lives are better off apart. We can help more people apart then together I guess. Sorry for not saying goodbye but I just thought it would be easier this way for both of us. Take care of yourself.
Love always,
Buffy
When Angel was done reading he had tears in his eyes. He wasn’t going to cry, he knew that, but he couldn’t help feeling upset. He knew this was coming from the moment she showed up last night, but that fact didn’t make things any easier. He knew it was for the best.
As he put the note down and walked towards the fridge he sensed that someone was there. This time it wasn’t Buffy. He slowly shut the fridge and very cautiously turned around, ready for anything. When he turned around he saw something he never expected.
“Hey there old friend,” the man said with a smile. He was a short, kind looking man. He was wearing old-fashioned cloths with a very outdated hat. “Well come here and give your old mentor a hug!”
“Whistler?” Angel asked, very confused at the site of his old friend. “What are you doing here?”
Whistler looked at him with disappointment, “Well it’s nice to see you too.”
“I’m sorry…I just…I don’t understand why you’re here,” Angel said still looking very confused.
“The power’s that be sent me. There’s been a little mix up and they thought I should be the one to tell you about it,” Whistler explained.
“What kind of mix up?” Angel asked, even more confused then ever.
“Well…remember when you turned human?” Whistler asked with a hint of sarcasm in his voice.
Angel just looked at him with a ‘you've gotta be kidding me’ kind of look.
Whistler continued, “Right…of course you do. It wasn’t supposed to happen that way. Someone upstairs got confused I guess. The memo clearly stated what this bone head was supposed to do but noooo, he sends a regenerative demon instead of what he was supposed to do…moron.”
Angel, still looking confused said, “I don’t understand.” Now beginning to get frustrated, “What are you trying to say?”
“You’re a big asset to the PTB’s, a true warrier for good. Also very important in keeping the balance between good and evil I might add. The power’s wanted to reward you for your good work by turning you human.” He looked at Angel who was still looking confused and then continued again, “However…as you noticed when you became human, you were no good to the power’s anymore without your vampire strength. The whole demon thing was a big mess up. They found a way to turn you human, and still keep your ‘super hero powers.’ Needless to say the power’s learned their lesson about sending a low level being to do a high importance job.”
“Wait…so…I’m supposed to be human and still fight for good?” Angel asked anxious to hear his answer.
“Yea…pretty much,” Whistler responded.
Angel still wasn’t convinced, “That’s it? Just like that I’m allowed to be human again? I mean...don’t get me wrong it sounds like a nice idea, but I had always thought that I had a long way to go before that day would come.”
“Well there is, I guess what you could call, a catch. The power’s still feel that you have a lot of good left to do that’s why they want to give you more power then a normal mortal. It also isn’t all just for you. They feel you can help more people by being human. You won’t be AS scary and you can go out into the day. It works out better for them just like it works out better for you,” he explained.
Angel still looked as if he didn’t believe what Whistler was telling him. “Hey,” Whistler said as he walked towards Angel and reached out his hand towards his chest, “Check this out,” he said as he reached out farther and pushed Angel’s chest lightly.
Angel gasped and lifted his head to face the ceiling. His arms where pointing out almost as if he was being forced. Then a beautiful, bright, white light glowed through his body. After a few moments the glow stopped and Angel fell to the floor. That was when he felt it. His heart was beating…he was alive.
