Joss was sleeping when Kai woke him up and handed him the phone.
PHONE-
"Hello, Mr. Wheddon, this is Gail Berman of Sandollar Entertainment. I heard that you had a very interesting idea for a TV series."
JOSS-
"Yeah...yes...it's called Buffy The Vampire Slayer."
GAIL-
"Well, I would like to help you get this series on the air."
JOSS-
"Great."
MARCH 1996 - CASTING
Gail had kept her word, even if ABC, CBS, and NBC passed on Buffy. 20th Century Fox agreed to produce it, but they refused to show it on the Fox Network. Finally, the two year old WB Network not only said yes, but hell yes. So, how he had to pick the perfect cast.
JOSS-
"The role of Buffy....Drew Barrymore?" He looks over at his new partner in the newly formed company 'Mutant Enemy', Douglas Petrie.
DOUGLAS-
"Too expensive. How about Carmen Electria?"
JOSS-
"No way, might as well consider Pamela Anderon-Lee for the role."
DOUGLAS-
"She is a blond."
JOSS-
"Look, the role of Buffy is not just some other bimbo, big breasted blond on TV. We need someone special."
GAIL-
"Well...there is this one...sh's not a blond, but hair and make-up can fix that. And she's an Emmy winner."
DOUGLAS-
"An Emmy winner? Who?"
GAIL-
"Sarah Michelle Gellar, from 'All My Children.'
ONE WEEK LATER-
JOSS-
"Okay...if I see one more actor over the age of 75 for the role of Giles, I'm going to pull my hair out."
DOUGLAS-
"Ohh....here's one. Remember those 'Taster's Choice' coffeee commericals. You know, the one with the guy handing a women on the balcony a cup of coffee."
JOSS-
"Uh...yeah....so?"
DOUGLAS-
"Well, that the only thing he's done in America, but in England, he played Frank in the play 'Rocky Horror Show."
JOSS-
"Wait...you what me to break a Hollywood taboo and hire a British guy to play a British guy."
DOUGLAS-
"Yeah....he's name is Anthony Stewart Head."
ONE MORE WEEK LATER
Joss, Douglas, and Gail are sitting behind a long table in a room. The characters of Xander, Cordelia, Joyce, and Willow still needed to be casted.
JOSS-
"Next."
A very uncomfortable looking young man comes forward and reads the 'side'.
DOUGLAS-
"So...how many acting jobs have you had, uh...Nick?"
NICK-
"Actually...none. I was a baseball player in high school, but an injury sidelined that career."
GAIL-
"So, you decided to take up acting?"
NICK-
"Well...that at first, but it seems like intersting work."
DOUGLAS-
"We'll be in touch."
Nick turns and leaves the room. Joss was very silent during the interview.
JOSS-
"He's got the job."
GAIL-
"What?"
JOSS-
"That was Xander. What's his name?"
GAIL-
"Nicholas Brendon."
