Back at the motel Xander contemplated going to the room Andrew and he shared with the very bedridden Robin Wood. His other choice was the conference room they had booked for the week which is were the majority of the girls were staying. The deciding factor was Andrew running into the room claiming he needed a nap due to car sickness.

“Alright, Andrew snores and Robin moans in his sleep, which means there is no rest for me in half sight.” Xander’s reply to the situation was not as bitter as Dawn expected.

“Well Buffy is in Slayer central with the other girls so you can chill with me in our room.”

“What and miss the grand fun of partying with shrill, excitable girls that I’ve put up with for…your room it is.” Xander gave Dawn his elbow and proceeded to walk her towards the room. Getting close to the narrow staircase he made a sweeping half bow. “after you mistress Dawn.”

Dawn smiled up at him and said sweetly, “don’t call me mistress unless your on your knees.” However Xander didn’t get to react to the shocking sentence before they were both assaulted by the smell of cigarette smoke.

“Damn D, getting a dirty mouth on ya!” Faith said from the shadows.

“F,” Dawn replied with a bitter edge to her voice, “Kinda early for you isn’t it?”

“Early,” answered the leather clad Slayer , “I haven’t even been to bed yet.”

“How is Robin?” Xander asked. Since he was unable to make a comeback to Dawn’s earlier statement, he figured a change in topic was of the good.

“Stable, sleeping and useless to me at the moment for my post battle needs. How’d your trip with the nerd and the brat go?”

“Fine fine,” Xander replied stepping into Faith’s personal space. “ So your post battle needs haven’t changed much, huh?” Xander bent into the doe-eyed Slayer, not quite touching her and said quietly. “I remember helping you out once upon a time and I’m sure, very, very sure that I could be much more help now.”

Dawn couldn’t believe what she was seeing. Faith’s breathing had gone shallow as Xander stared boldly down at her, inching closer with every enunciated syllable. Faith wet her lips in an anticipatory nature, but as she leaned in to close the distance between them Xander stepped back besides Dawn and took her hand in his.

“But as you can see I promised to spend some quality time with Dawn here. Sans super powered individuals like yourself of course.” Xander pulled Dawn towards her room away from the speechless Slayer, but muttered to Faith as he passed her, “Never call her a brat again.”

Dawn, barely suppressing her laughter, shot Faith a look of victory as she opened the door. “Oh, my, God!” the young Summers girl practically shrieked as she turned to look at her hero. As he closed the door behind him Xander winced from the excitement in Dawn’s voice. Sitting in the rooms one chair as she perched on the bed they popped the tops on two Diet Dr. Peppers.

“So what was the reward you wanted for helping me with the plaque?” Xander asked the young girl. “Just remember all my money and most my personal objects just sank into the earth.”

“How about a story?” Dawn asked.

“Like what?” Xander asked right back.

“Before I answer that question I would like to remind you that you did say I was incredible…” Dawn started to ramble. Xander knew this was a bad sign. If he waited long enough he knew he would find out what she wanted to know it was just a matter “…what happened in Oxnard?…” before she got to the point.

“Dawn”

“I know you said no power on this earth…”

“Just…”

“…but it is the only thing about you I don’t know…”

“…sit down and hush and I’ll tell you.”

“…and someone should know, and you just said you’ll tell me!”

“Consider it an apology and a way of saying I at least recognize you as a young woman, not a child. It wasn’t right for Buffy and me to drug you and try to drag you away from the fight. You have proven, more than once that you deserve to have a say in such things.”

Dawn smiled up at him. “You sounded like Giles during that speech.”

“Well don’t ever tell him that ,” Xander said, patting a place on the arm of the chair. “he’ll have a attack of the stuffies and be of no real use for a whole day. Now fetch some more drinks and some snacks, I have a story to tell.”
