Rose awoke with a start, covered in a slight sweat. She looked around at her surroundings: a darkened hotel room, night. Nothing could be seen besides the lights of New York City. Beside her something moved, a body.
"You up again?" asked a groggy voice.
"Jack, I had the dream again. This time. . . Cal found me and told me you froze to death. And you were. " Jack sat up and brushed away a bit of her red hair out of her face, kissing her cheek.
"I'm right here, see? I'm alive, and doing great. So are you. And Cal's not going to find us, he's probably testifying in the hearing. In a couple days we'll go to the train station and grab a train. Then we'll head out to the Santa Monica pier, remember? Like I promised. " He told her, his blue eyes wide with concern. Then he got up, only his trousers on, and walked to the bathroom. "Besides, if he's not at the hearing, how's Cal going to find us?"
* * *
Grand Central Station was filled with people when Jack and Rose got there.
"Oh man. I guess not a lot of people are testifying like I thought. " Jack quipped as they wormed their way to a free ticket booth. "Uh, hi. " He greeted the old ticket seller. "Can I have two for Santa Monica please?"
"That's $20, please. " The tellar replied, getting the tickets ready.
"Damn. Rose, do you have any money? I've only got a couple nickels. " Jack turned and saw Rose turned, facing the mass of people. "Rose?"
"Yes? Oh, money. Of course. . . " She dug through the pockets of her blue wool coat and produced. . . a diamond necklace. The Heart of the Ocean.
"Holy shit!" Jack breathed. "Keep that hidden, alright? Now money. . . " He helped look through the deep pockets and found a large amount of cash bundled together. Both their eyes went wide at the figured sum in their hands.
"Do you have the money or not?" The old woman asked, eyeing the growing line behind the two.
"Yeah, here. " Jack replied. He put two soggy 10 dollar bills down on the counter for her to see. The tellar held up the bills and felt the quality.
"I'm sorry. I'm not allowed to except this money. Number one, it's salty, which decreases the value. Two, it's too faded to make out how much it is. Now unless you have a real twenty, I'm not going to be able to help you. Next!"
"Wait! We're from the Titanic, that's why!" Jack insisted.
"That's what everyone's saying. Next!"
"Hold-" Rose started to say, but they were shoved out of line by a chubby, wealthy looking couple.
"Damn it!" Jack muttered. He picked up a rock from the ground and threw it. Nailing a man in the back of the head.
"What the hell?" The man asked. He spun around, and he glared at the boy who threw it.
"Oh my God!" Rose whispered. "Cal!"
"Rose? Rose! Get back here!" Caledon shouted after them as they grabbed their bags and ran away from him, shoving people away.
"Excuse me. Sorry. Move!" Jack and Rose yelled at the mass. Rose looked behind her and saw her ex-fiancee chasing them, and gaining.
"Shit! Rose, run!" Jack told her, speeding up and swerving over by the track. Rose followed, but kept looking behind her. She turned back in time to see Jack stumble and trip. She went down with him, and they both landed on the tracks. Cal chuckled to himself and jumped down beside Rose. He grabbed her, pulled her and took the Heart of the Ocean from her pocket.
"I knew I forgot something. " Cal smirked and started to climb back onto the platform, but Jack pulled him back and punched him in the face. Cal wobbled from the blow and let go of the diamond. Which landed on the third rail.
"Damn!" Cal proclaimed. He punched Jack and started back to the platform but stopped when a whistle blew through the tunnel.
"Oh shit!" Jack gasped as a light could be seen around the bend.
"Train!" Rose screamed. There was an electric crackling, and all three looked to see the Heart of the Ocean crackling and glowing with electricity, getting more powerful as the train drew nearer and nearer.
"Oh shit! Oh shit!"
"Jack!"
"Rose!" The crackling from the diamond became louder than the shouts of the other people on the platform, the shouts and screams of those on the tracks, and the train itself as it came around the bend.
Suddenly the crackling became came to an abrupt halt as the diamond broke from the electricity surging in it, and a blinding light lit up the station. The in-coming train screeched to a halt inches from where the three had been. But all that remained were three pairs of smoking shoes. Not even any pieces of the broken diamond could be found.
