Buffy was silent on the walk to her house. Her heightened slayer sense went off as they got to her street. She looked around for the source. Angel saw him first.
Spike stood, sans wheelchair, in front of them. He wore his trademark smirk and his gameface.
"Spike." He said with his gameface on.
"Angelus. Good to see you and the slayer are chummy again. Makes it so much easier for me you see." He motioned with his arm and several vamps emerged from the shadows.
"It's an ambush!" Angel told Buffy.
"Always good to be the guest of honor at parties like these." She said, a little bit of her old charm returning.
"How many stakes do you have left?"
"Two. " She said looking around, hopefully for something. Anything to give them a little time.
"Doesn't look good for you two, does it? My poor Dru. She didn't have a chance either. Now neither do you." Spike growled. The vamps moved in, circling them. There were six of them, including Spike. Normally this would be no problem for the two of them but with only two stakes things were definitely not good.
"Buffy, fight them off. We can't take 'em but maybe we can get through them."
"So we're running?" She asked.
"We're running." he affirmed.
Back to back they fought the vamps off. Spike, luckily for Buffy and Angel, stayed behind letting his minions do the grunt work. Buffy pulled out a stake and gave it to Angel. She had a bottle of holy water in her pocket and carefully removed the lid and flung it at the advancing vampires. It hit two of them in the face, causing them to pull back in pain.
It was the opening they had been looking for, Buffy grabbed Angel's hand and led him through the moaning vamps. They ran down the street with the vamps in pursuit. Buffy instinctively ran to her house leading Angel with her. She flung open the front door and tried to pull Angel with her. She was over the threshold when suddenly he let go of her hand. It was like a wall prevented him from entering.
"I can't come in, Buffy." He reminded her.
With the vamps so close she only had a moment to think about what to do. She couldn't leave him out there. "Get in!" she yelled pulling him into the house.
"Buffy?" Her mother came into the hall and almost fainted at the sight of Angel. Joyce let out a scream that could have woken the dead. Buffy just hung her head unsure of how to explain this.
"Out of the frying pan..." Angel whispered.
"And into the fire." Buffy finished.
