Part One

Narrator: When I was a little girl, I saw a beautiful bird singing on a tree one day. I was very young and the bird seemed to me, to be what I wanted most in the whole world. I asked my Father for the bird. He laughed and rumpled my hair. He'd never been able to refuse me anything. That night, the night of my sixth birthday, he presented me with the bird in a cage. For many days, I would sit and watch it preen. Hear it's beautiful voice singing melodies so sweet that my heart sang along with it. I named my beloved bird Jodie.

Then one day, when I approached Jodie's cage, I noticed that he'd stopped singing. That was when I realised my beautiful bird was dead. He'd died of a broken heart. Staring out the great window where he'd been placed, he could see vast fields everyday. And those green fields reminded him of what he could never have - freedom. That was the day I realised that there were many ways to destroy a person and the day I vowed never to care again."

"Willow, earth to Willow. What are you up to??!" Willow turened around. "Oh, Cordelia, it's you", her usual gentle tones were replaced by the patient voice she usually reserved for those she disliked. "That dress is so last season! I mean, beige??!! Please! Oh, I can't believe that I would even hang around another minute with a girl with so little sense of fashion. I mean, I do have a reputation to uphold!" So saying, Cordelia spun around and left Willow standing and gaping after her.

Willow headed towards the library where her best friend Buffy had been waiting for the last half-hour. It was ironic that the library had become their favourite hang-out in Sunnydale High. Not by choice but certainly by necessity. Buffy was discussing something with Giles when Willow entered. She smiled faintly on seeing her Willow. "Hi, Willow! Giles and I were just discussing something."

"Where's Xander?", she asked. "Xander?". Buffy's smile became fixed. "He's.....somewhere. He hasn't been feeling well this last couple of days. His Mom said he's got the...mumps. He's not allowed on the phone." "Oh." Willow smiled. "I was getting worried about him. I sure hope he gets better soon. Listen, Buffy..." Willow bit her lip. She wasn't sure how to best bring about the subject.

"Yes?", Buffy was sharpening a stake, her expression intense. " I....you know you and Angel. I mean, before he turned...bad...you and he....you know...What was it like?" Buffy dropped her stake. "Like? What are we talking about here?" Willow lost her patience. "The weather. What do you think, Buffy??!! I was talking about the night you and Angel made love. What was it like. Me and Oz, well, we've been talking about it and I need someone to advice me."

Buffy smiled wryly. "And you came to me for advice. Me, the girl who slept with a vampire who ends up stalking me with intent to murder. Maybe you have a few screws loose in your head, Willow." With that, Buffy got up from the table and walked out of the library. Silence reigned and Willow caught Giles looking emptily away into space. He looked sadly at Willow. "Ju....just grab your, your chance, Willow. Just grab it before it's too late." Willow's face softened. "Oh, Giles." She hugged him to her as he cried.
