For Buffy, the weekend seemed to both fly by and drag on. Her father spent most of his time on the phone, settling things in preparation for moving. It didn’t seem like they were taking much; just her bags, her father’s suitcase, and the car. Buffy went out on walks a lot, or worked out at the local gym, keeping her self-defense skills up. At night she would stay in her room and write in her diary, staying away from her drunken father. Also, she had several more dreams, filled with mysterious messages and strange demons that looked like they were attacking her.

Once, she had an elaborate daydream during her history class, ending when she fell out of her desk and woke up shouting about burning vampires. After that particular scene, she couldn’t wait to get away from her school. Her history teacher seemed to take personal insult, thinking she was referring to him as a vampire, and her classmates had only made it worse.

Finally, Wednesday morning Hank banged on Buffy’s bedroom door, shouting “We’re leaving now, get out here now!”

Less than half and hour later they drove out. Buffy opted to take the back seat, knowing that both her and her father were terrible morning people, and she was too tired for the inevitable shouting match that would occur if she was too close to him.

Buffy stared out the window, eventually drifting off to sleep for a few hours.

She was in a graveyard. The only lighting came from a flickering streetlight several yards away. She was holding a wooden cross loosely at her side, a wooden stake in her right hand.
A group of fledgling vampires in leather trench coats stepped out from the bushes behind her. Buffy spun around, kicking the closest vampire down easily and knocking another back with her cross-wielding hand. She quickly slammed her stake into the third vampire, but stumbled as the remaining two vampires charged at her together. She was body-slammed into the ground. A sneering vampire’s face smirked at her and whispered “Welcome to Sunnydale. This town is ours, Slayer, get out while you can…”

Buffy woke with a start and opened her eyes. She immediately shut them again as the blazing afternoon sun caused red dots to dance in front of her eyes. Blinking, Buffy let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding, and checked her watch. It was nearly 11:00.
Wow, Buffy thought, I slept for almost four hours. It didn’t feel that long; I had a really short dream…

She thought back, and could vaguely remember a dream about vampires. And that she had been in some graveyard in Sunnydale. Well, that was exciting. And also very, very specific.

By now, Buffy was used to the creepy dreams she had every night, but most of them were just flashes of creatures, sometimes a taller, dark-haired girl fighting the demons, or herself staking vampires. Ever since that night, when she had stabbed that man with her pencil, she knew that there was no use denying it. The ‘man’ had been a vampire, and she had found the ‘staking’ of it so familiar because she had had dreams of it.

However, Buffy had the uneasy feeling that there was a reason the dreams had become so frequent. She had the tingling sensation that something horrible would be happening soon. Buffy didn’t mention her dreams to anyone. After all, who would she talk to? Her father, her teachers? She almost laughed out loud at the thought of her informing her history teacher that she felt vampires were going to be taking over the world soon.

Nevertheless, as the car zoomed by the ‘Welcome to Sunnydale’ sign, a flash of two vampires tackling her entered her mind, and left just as quickly. If vampires were real, there had to be other people in the world who knew about them. Unless she had just gone 110% crazy. Which she really didn’t want to believe.

Buffy was determined to find someone who understood. If only to prove that I’m not completely insane. At the same time though, Buffy wanted to just stop the dreams, forget everything, and live her life as normally as possible…

The car slowed to a stop in front of a small but nice looking house at 1630 Revello Drive. Buffy grabbed her bags and followed her father into the house, wondering how he had found and bought a house so quickly.

Now that he was finally in Sunnydale, Hank was ready for a fresh start. He was also in a very good mood, knowing that tomorrow night he would be seeing Alice. He whistled a little as he entered the living room.

Buffy almost jumped in surprise as her father began whistling. Well, someone was in a good mood. Buffy couldn’t help also feeling a little cheerful too though, as she saw the nice and cozy interior of the house. “How did you get this house so quickly?” she asked.

Hank replied, ”Seems like a ton of families have been moving out and we got lucky. Alice got me through to the family who moved out, and I made a quick deal. I just have a bit more paperwork for the realtors, then we’re set.”

Slightly curious about all the families leaving, but not enough to ask about it, Buffy just nodded and said “Lucky us.” A bit of the cheer she’d felt earlier had evaporated when her father mentioned Alice. Buffy headed towards the stairs so she could check out the bedrooms, but her father began talking again.

“You’re going to Sunnydale High, starting tomorrow. There was some kind of delay, so school only started a week ago. You’re supposed to meet with the principal first thing tomorrow morning to go over your school record, so you’ll have to get to school earlier.“ Hank paused, then added, “The school’s only a few blocks away, you should be able to walk. I have an orientation meeting early tomorrow, I might not be able to drive you anyway.”

Buffy felt a bit of nervous apprehension; she had forgotten all about going to the new school during the car ride. Walking up the stairs she quickly found the smaller bedroom, dropped her bags on the floor, and made a quick decision to take a walk around the neighborhood and start getting to know her way around. Especially if I have to walk to school tomorrow morning. She was a little annoyed, but was used to walking to and from school anyway, so it wasn’t too bad. With thoughts of worst-case scenarios, scary teachers, and unfriendly classmates swirling through her mind, Buffy stepped outside.
