Riley awkwardly looked down at the crying girl. “Jexica, I’m sorry,” he said. “Really.”

“Why? Why’d she have to be a Slayer? Why couldn’t she just—just avoid it?”

“You know it doesn’t work like that.”

“Fine, then why’d the remainder of the Regina’s bitches have to hunt her down?”

Riley shuddered at hearing of Regina again. She’d caused more death than some of the demons that he knew of.

“Revenge. You know it’s powerful,” he said. “Remember the action figure?”

She nodded, almost smiling, when she remembered playing with Josot, all those years ago…. Josot had tried to take away her action figure. She had used her residual, Slayer’s-daughter strength.

Josot had not kept the action figure.

“So now what’s going to happen? Fai—Mom’s dead, and Robin’s been dead.”

“We were considering having Spike come in, just as a sort of guardian until you were eighteen. But then, there was—there was stuff.”

“Stuff? What kind of stuff?” Jexica looked up at Riley anxiously.

“Spike’s been detained,” said Sam smoothly. Jexica and Riley hadn’t noticed the other woman much during the conversation.

“Detained with what?” Jexica looked from Riley to Sam and back.

“Detained with Drusilla,” said Riley.

“Riley, we weren’t supposed to upset her,” said Sam. “Not that you can’t handle it, because you probably could,” she hastily added off of Jexica’s pissed-off look. “But Buffy said to….”

She got cut off.

“Buffy never respected me or my mother the way that she should’ve,” said Jexica angrily.

“Jexica,” said Riley flatly. “Buffy is one of the best individuals that I know. And she didn’t like Faith. But she did respect her, especially in these last twenty years or so. I know Buffy, and she cares about you. She just… Overprotects people that she cares about.”

“So, what’s going to happen to me? And what’s going to happen to Spike?”

“The Watcher’s Council is doing all that we can to get Spike out. We’re sending in some of the top girls, and other fighters, and hopefully…. Hopefully something can happen.”

“Okay. What about me?”

“We’re going to emancipate you.”

“Sweet!”

A/N: If Jexica’s reaction to Faith’s death seems less-than-caring, she could be repressing. Also, Faith’s treatment of her (as according to this story) was less of a mother/daughter relationship, and more of a babysitter relationship, giving her much more freedom and much less coddling. They cared, just not as much as the stereotypical “family”, making Jexica’s reactions to death slightly less than shocked.
