“Jexica,” whined Jon. “Barri won’t shut up.”
“He never can,” she agreed. “Is he calling me a whore again? Or is it a cow this time?”
“It’s probably both.”
They were speaking in pig-latin, so that the annoying underclassman beside them couldn’t listen in.
“Hey, guys, I can’t understand!” Barri yelped.
“That’s the idea,” Jexica shot back. “Quit calling me a cow in Spanish, and I’ll quit talking about you in Pig Latin.”
“Fine,” Barri sulked.
The bell rang, and Jexica gathered up her books. “Thank God. You said that the test in science wasn’t hard?”
“Not if you have your notes.”
“Oh. I maybe have those. Or, probably not. Oh, God. I’m going to fail.”
“You’ll be fine,” Jon told her. She smiled, blooming under any type of compliment from him. She walked out of the room ahead of him, but looked over her shoulder to catch him walking away.
“Jexica Lehane to the office, Jexica Lehane to the office, please.”
She frowned at the PA system. “Stupid announcements. Making me late to class.” But she turned and went to the office anyway.
