Chapter 3.

Dawn hunted down Spike, who had taken the opportunity to hide back in the basement now that it was free of potentials. She found him sprawled out on his make shift bed, lighting up. Dawn watched him in the shadows at the top of the stairs for a little bit, waiting for him to sense her.

“Are you planing on standing there all day pet?” Spike asked.

Dawn smiled and made her way down the stairs. Spike stood up quickly, taking in the new appearance of the youngest Summer’s.

“What’s this then eh?” he asked. “Red been in the magicks again?”

Dawn smirked slightly which earned her a surprised expression from Spike, and leant casually against the wall.

“I’m the future Dawn of 2005,” she answered. “Did a spell, backfired, switched with your Dawn, here I am.”

“Fair enough.”

Dawn smiled at his quick acceptance of her explanation. She gave him a hug, slipped his lighter into her front pocket of her jeans, and then leant back against the wall.

“So, you and I are going out, too,” she said.

Spike spluttered slightly. “Dawn, pet, seems obvious that you have been through some changes, but you’re like a baby sister to me. I just don’t see you that way luv.”

She laughed at this. “I think it’s pretty obvious I’m not little anymore. Besides not interested in you like that sweetie, sorry to bruise your ego, but been there done that.”

At this Spike coughed violently and paled. (I know technically vamps can’t go paler but oh well). Dawn just watched him squirm, a smile playing on her lips.

“What?! We don’t… I would never, not to you. Bloody hell!”

Dawn just rolled her eyes. “I’m kidding! God I forgot how uptight everyone was. We’ve never screwed, well maybe…” She smiled mischievously. “Anyway that’s not what I meant, you and I are going out tonight to pick up Amanda, another potential who has been living here. Xander and Anya will come over and watch the girls and Andrew. Speaking of which where is Andrew?”

Spike looked slightly relieved at her explanation. He also noticed the different, gentler tone she used when mentioning Anya, but didn’t bring it up. However he did snort when she brought up Andrew’s absence.

“Bloody git is in the backyard. He decided that since all the wee girls will be living here, it would be more ‘cost efficient’ if we grew our own vegetables. Something about living off the land and bleedin’ amazons.

Dawn laughed at this.

“So Miss 2005, what’s the future got in store for yours truly?”

Dawn remained silent for awhile; a heated debate going on in her mind. Half of her was convinced that she had to tell him so he could be prepared. The other side however, which was leftover from her brief stint as a Watcher in training, reminded her of the consequences of rewriting history. Spike meanwhile, watched her out of the corner of his eye while rummaging through his pockets for the lighter he had a minute ago.

“I think that until Giles returns, I should remain tight lipped about the future,” Dawn said. “Forehand knowledge would be handy but I don’t wanna risk altering the future.”

Spike having given up the search for his lighter, smirked at what she had just said. “Now you’re sounding more like the nibblet I know. Knew you were in there somewhere.“

At this, Dawn walked over to him, gently pushed him back in to the wall, and looked up at him through her eyelashes.

“Spike honey, you have no idea about the changes this little ‘nibblet’ has gone through. I can tell you though, we’re gonna have fun finding out.”

And with that, she reached down between them, slid her hand in her pocket grabbing the silver lighter and pushed it against his chest. Spike, looking shocked and a little bit scared, took the lighter and watched in amazement as she turned and walked back up the stairs, shaking her denim clad ass as she did so.

“Be ready to leave in 2 hours, after sunset,” Dawn called over her shoulder. Then the door closed behind her, leaving a very confused Spike behind to go over what had just happened.

Later that day as the sun was setting

Dawn was in the living room going through the weapons chest. She finally settled on a nice pointy stake and a silver dagger. She was in the middle of examining the dagger when there was a loud knock at the door. Dawn had barely taken a step in the direction before Andrew came running out of the kitchen and stood in front of the door.

“Welcome travelling souls,” he yelled through the door. “Before your entrance is granted, state your name and the secret password.”

There was no reply for a moment. Dawn stared at Andrew as if he were insane. She walked towards the door while rolling her eyes and hit him over the back of the head. She then focused on the doorknob jiggling and the incessant pounding on the door.

“Andrew,” Xander called form the other side of the door. “What the hell are you talking about? Unlock the door now! If it wasn’t for the fact that I would have to replace it, I would break it down myself.”

Hearing this, Andrew tried repeatedly to turn the doorknob whilst still wearing his oven mitts. This amused Dawn at first, however he was quickly growing on her nerves. Sighing, she pushed him out of the way and opened the door, revealing Xander in mid knock.

Scowling, Xander pushed past them with Anya in tow. Ignoring Dawn at first, Xander rounded on Andrew, his annoyance evident.

“Listen here,” Xander said. “You are not 007, frankly your not even 00. You are a hostage in this house. A prisoner. One might even go as far as butt monkey. And from now on, your door answering privileges have been revoked.”

Andrew opened his mouth as if to protest.

“No,” Xander interrupted him. “Whatever it is I don’t care, the answer is NO! Now be a good prisoner and go play with your new easy bake oven. “

Andrew just pouted. Then turned and walked towards the kitchen, mitts swinging while muttering about “it’s a microwave and Mr Grumpy”.

Xander sighed, and then as if just noticing Dawn (even though he pushed past her before) smiled and gave her a big hug. “Dawnie, check you out. All adult size, makes a guy proud.”

Dawn smiled back. Anya then pushed Xander out of then way and squeezed Dawn tight.

“Welcome Dawn of the future,” Anya said. “I agree, you have aged several years. Does this mean you have orgasms now?”

Dawn who hugged Anya back just as tightly, laughed at this. She had really missed Anya’s abruptness.

“Sure does,” Dawn answered. “Quite a few actually.”

Anya beams at this news, while Xander looks slightly horrified at this revelation.

“Guys, I really do wanna hang out,” Dawn said. “But Spike and I have to do this thing first. It’s kinda a life or death deal. If you could look after the girls and Andrew that would be great, No one goes outside though, not without me or Spike here.”

Anya nodded. “We came with movies, something called Shrek. It has a talking donkey in it. It should be very exciting.”

Dawn laughed again while a pained expression crossed Xander’s face.

Spike chose this moment to come up from the basement. Sensing his presence, Dawn turned and smiled.

“Spike,” Dawn said. “Perfect timing I was just about to come get you.” She walked back over to the weapon’s chest, grabbed an axe, threw it to Spike who caught it easily, then picked up her dagger and stake and tucked them into the back off her jeans under her top.

“Ok that’s it then,” she said. “I don’t know how long we’ll be, If Amanda takes the news well we might take her on a quick patrol to explain and try to catch her up with the others. I’ve got Buffy’s cell on me if you need to reach us. “

And with that they walked out the front door.

They walked in comfortable silence for a while, Dawn thinking about everything that had happened and trying to figure out how she felt about being back. Spike on the other hand, lit up yet another cigarette, while sneaking glances at Dawn when he thought she wasn’t looking.

After about 5 minutes, Spike flicked the butt away and opened his mouth to speak.

“So where is this new potential anyway?”

“She should be at the high school. A vampire will attack soon, she’ll get away though, but the bringers will find her tonight.”

Spike nodded, sneaking another glance.

“If you can’t tell me my future yet, at least tell me yours,” Spike said. “You seem so different from your sixteen year old self. What happened to cause this change nibblet?”

Dawn paused for a second, thinking that question over.

“Well, I guess it started after this whole thing with The First ended, we head over to Rome for a bit, I started school, Buffy started doing this guy, The Immortal-“

Spike stiffened at these words and vamped out.

“The Immortal?!” Spike yelled. “What the hell is she doing with that ass?”

“Ohhhh, that’s right! I forgot your not a fan of his, ah . . . work,” Dawn said. “He had a play date with your Dru and Darla didn’t he?”

Spike just growled.

“Oh please. First off Dru was a nut, and secondly, cut the nut a break, someone that fine, damn, I wanted to jump him myself. Anyway, they eventually broke up and we then moved to England with Giles. I was only there a few weeks. I was being trained as a Watcher, though it quickly became obvious that wasn’t my destiny. We then got word about increased activity at the hellmouth in Cleveland. Everyone left to fight it except for Buffy and Giles. They stayed. Giles rebuilt the council and Buffy was busy training all the new slayers.”

Spike, who had by this time returned to his human visage, was quiet for a moment while he absorbed all this new information.

“Why would Buffy let you live in a different country by yourself?”

“What? Oh, no I’m not by myself I live with Faith.”

Spike looked confused, and Dawn seeing this smiled slyly.

“Well technically when you two met she was in Buffy’s body. Something about how she could ride you at a gallop until your legs buckled and your eyes rolled up. And how she could squeeze you until you pop like warm champagne and you'd beg her to hurt you just a little bit more. “

Spike’s eyes glazed over as he remembers that night. After that he wasn’t sure if he wanted to kill her or shag her. He settled for going back to his crypt and “relieving” his tension.

If that was this Faith chick in Buffy’s body, Spike mused, then he wouldn’t mind meeting this bird again

“Yeah, I thought that would refresh your memory,” Dawn said. “Anyway, Xander, Will and everyone are there as well but Faith and I are roomies. Plus Will has been teaching me magick, which is how I even got here in the first place. And sure, I miss Buffy, but I have freedom in Cleveland, not to mention screw buddies, which I gotta tell, can come in real handy when you have that itch.”

Hearing this, Spike’s first reaction was plain shock. Though that shock was quickly turned to anger. He opened his mouth to give Dawn a blasting as a scream pierced the night.

“Showtime,” Dawn said.

Then with that, they both took off running towards the high school, both keeping evenly paced with the other.

Reaching the school, Dawn led the way to the science room. She spotted Amanda and the vamp in the room, the vampire bearing down on her.

“Spike take care of the vamp, just weaken, don’t kill him though, she needs to do that herself. I’ll deal with her.”

Charging inside, Spike, once again in game face, barrelled into the demon, sending it sprawling to the ground. At the same time, Dawn grabs Amanda.

“Amanda,” Dawn said in a serious tone. “Before you ask, yes, he is a real vampire. He’s strong and fast, but so are you.“

Dawn pulled out her stake and handed it to Amanda. The slayer looked from Dawn, down to the stake being pressed into her hand, and back up to Dawn. Fear and confusion clearly showed on her face.

On the other side of the room, Spike punched the vampire in the stomach, breaking a few ribs as he did so. The vamp growled and took a swing at spike. Ducking the blow, he swiped the legs out from under his opponent, who once again, landed on the ground.

“Look Amanda,” Dawn said. “I know you’re scared, you have a right to be and it’s a lot to take in. But trust me when I say, you have the power to do real damage to him. This is your battle not mine, though I’ll be right here if you need me. Look past the fear, listen to your instincts. Know you can beat him.”

Dawn grabbed Amanda’s hand and led her over to where Spike was sitting on the struggling vamp. Hands shaking slightly, Amanda raised the stake and approached the two vamps. Spike jumped up, delivered one final kick and then stepped out of the way.

Amanda and the vamp squared off. He lunged forward knocking her down. Shrieking, she lost her grip on the stake, and it rolled to the side. Spike was about intervene when dawn held him back, shaking her head slightly, never taking her eyes off the scene in front of her.

The vamp was closing in on Amanda, a smirk twisted in place as it sensed her fear. Bearing its fangs, he slowly lowered his head to her neck, while Amanda simply laid there in fear and shock.

“Amanda,” Dawn yelled. “You were born with this power, use it. Listen to your gut. DON”T LET HIM WIN!”

There was still no reaction from the young girl. Getting frustrated, Dawn and Spike were about to jump in and take over when Amanda suddenly grabbed a hold of the vamp’s shoulder and brought her knee up, connecting with his groin. The vamp let out a pained growl as Amanda pushed him off her with her leg, while Dawn and Spike cheered and offered words of encouragement.

Taking the few seconds before her opponent got to his feet, she wildly looked around for her stake. Not finding it, panic began to rise until her eyes feel upon the flag poll. With out thinking she rushed over, grabbed it, and brought it down sharply over her knee, breaking it in two. Discarding one half, she raised the other and turned just in time to duck out of the way of an oncoming fist. While the vamp’s arm was still in mid swing, Amanda brought her elbow back hard, connecting with his scull, while at the same time bringing her makeshift stake up and putting it through his back. The vamp barely had time to react before turning to dust.

“Way to go Amanda!” Dawn called excitedly. “I was worried at first but you brought the hurt in the end.”

“What the heck is going on?” Amanda asked. “Today I went to school, went to classes, no big. And now you’re telling me vampires exist and that I’m meant to hurt them. And why do you look like that Dawn? And who’s he?” She pointed at Spike. Then, glancing out the window, she added, “And why are there guys in robes running towards the school?”

At this both Dawn and Spike turned and saw the bringers coming towards the school.

“My new yet sexy appearance is a long story,” Dawn said. “This is Spike and these guys are bringers. The short version? They want you dead and we’re not gonna let that happen.”

“Oh, um that’s good I guess,” Amanda said. “I think I’m gonna be sick.”

Before anyone could respond there was a loud crash and the bringers jumped through the window.

Dawn pushed Amanda into the corner yelling at her to say there, and pulled out the silver dagger. Spike tightened his grip on his axe and stepping in front of Dawn in a protective way.

“You two birds stay behind me,” Spike said. “Leave the fighting to us demons.”

Dawn just rolled her eyes at this and charged past him. Coming up to the first bringer she ducked the punch aimed for her pretty little head and delivered one of her own. The Bringer stumbled and Dawn used this to her advantage, grabbing him she threw him against the wall a few metres away. Then in the blink of an eye Dawn was in front of the crumpled bringer and stabbed him in the gut, effectively killing him.

Spike just stood there staring at her, as all of this had happened in mere seconds. Before he had time to try and process this, a second bringer attacked him. Growling slightly Spike turned to deal with him.

Within minutes Dawn and Spike had dispatched most of the Bringers. Turning around, she saw the last of them coming up behind Spike. Yelling for him to duck, she formed a fire ball in her right palm and sent it flying over Spike hitting her target square in the chest. Smiling, she wiped her blade clean on one of the robes, stuck the dagger back in her pants, then went over to Amanda, who was sitting in the corner in shock. Seeing Dawn approach, she opened her mouth as if to say something, however when it became apparent that nothing was coming out, she shut it again. Dawn offered her hand and pulled Amanda up off the floor.

“I think we should take you back to our place now,” Dawn said. “You can call your parents from there.”

Amanda nodded and followed her out. Sensing Spike still hadn’t moved, Dawn stopped and turned back questioningly. Seeing Spike’s suspicious gaze, she laughed to herself.

“Oh,” Dawn said. “Didn’t I mention that I’m also a Slayer?”

And with that she walked out the door, Amanda in toe, while Spike just stood there.
