A/N: Soporific means boring. I had to look it up. :)
The Battle
“I’m nervous.”
“I love you.”
“Thanks, but I’m still nervous.”
Buffy clucked her tongue and brought Xander’s face down toward her own. She kissed him with as much passion as she could muster. “You and I are going to make it through this,” she told him, looking into his eyes. “We’ve lasted sixteen years, Xander. We’ve done this ascension thing before. I had my doubts, but now I know without question that we are going to make it through this. And when we do, we’re going to have lots of sex and enjoy everything about life for days. Okay?” She smiled and hugged him tight. “I promise, Xander. Nothing is going to happen to you, or me, or anyone else in this fight. I promise.”
“I believe you,” he whispered into her hair, smelling it one more time and taking in the moment just in case she was wrong. She’d never been before, but just in case.
Wood checked his watch. 10:28am. “Are we sure this is the right spot?”
Dawn nodded. “Pretty sure. That’s what the Soporific Chronicles said.”
Kat giggled. “Is it really called that?”
“No, but it describes it pretty accurately,” Dawn responded.
“It’s coming,” Pete whispered. Buffy and Xander kissed one last time and broke away. She turned with Kennedy on her other side. Both were armed with fairly heavy swords. On Buffy’s other side was Xander, who was beside Wood, who was beside Kat, who was beside Dawn. All four of them were armed with hefty blow torches. Pete stood on Kennedy’s other side, wearing a very Angel-like black duster and holding two double-edged axes. Willow sat beside Xander’s construction site, concentrating hard and preparing herself for a fairly large freezing spell for when the demon came so he’d stop in place.
Buffy heard a noise in the distance, and she grinned. “Let’s do this,” she muttered.
A bunch of screaming erupted as a large shape grew slowly. It finally stopped growing, and it was almost two hundred feet tall. “Dawn…” Buffy shouted over the chaos. “Did the Soporific Chronicles say anything about the demon being THIS FREAKING BIG?”
Dawn just shook her head.
Buffy swore. “Xander, thank God you set up that extra dynamite,” she said, more to herself than her husband.
The demon slithered forward. Buffy thought quickly as it knocked over houses about how it was similar to The Mayor and how it was different. They were both snakes. The mayor was about a third of the size. The mayor was green, while this freaky thing was a blood red.
And the mayor had a human weakness, a quality that this sucker didn’t seem to possess.
“Shit, it’s a Palchor!” Dawn screamed. “I thought these were mythical.”
“Can you shed some light on what it doesn’t like?” Buffy screamed back.
“Fire, so we’re good here. It’s eyes are weakest, but good luck getting up there,” she responded, needing to really over-extend her voice to be heard over the nearing destruction of establishments.
Buffy grinned again, kissed Xander a final time despite her better judgement, and muttered, “I can swing it. Just watch me go. BLOW TORCHES, HIT IT!” she yelled, getting in the last words that were possible over the extraordinary noise of the enormous serpent. It opened its mouth and uttered a battle cry that made everyone’s ear drums want to explode, but they kept position. The battle cry shortly turned into a scream of agony as the oversized fire-spouters attacked it from multiple places. Xander stepped forward and aimed as high as he could. The Palchor didn’t move.
“Buffy! Go!” he yelled. She couldn’t hear him, but she read his lips and nodded. She beckoned Kennedy and Pete to follow as she jumped around to the back of the demon and started hacking away at its tail.
The skin was inpenetrable. Their swords and axes bounced back as though the demon was little more than a trampoline and their weapons were plastic. Buffy thought fast. “Keep trying!” she screamed at them, and bounced on the Palchor’s tail. She bounced until she was going fairly high, and then she bounded toward the middle of the beast, sticking her sword out and allowing it to connect with the skin of the demon. It finally made a wound, and she held tight to her sword. She was about fifty feet from the ground.
Kennedy saw what Buffy was doing and threw her sword up to her. Buffy caught it with ease and both Kennedy and Pete were swept away by a vicious swing of the tail once the Palchor finally realized that Buffy had penetrated its thick hide. She didn’t have time to see if they were okay. She mouthed to Xander to lead the demon away as she started to climb the demon, using her swords as mountain-climbing equipment.
The Palchor screamed again and didn’t need to be led away by Xander. It lunged forward and started to slither. Buffy kept her grip on the swords but was swung around radically. She got up to a hundred feet when her hand holding the sword embedded slipped, and she began to fall. The Palchor stopped again and whipped its tail around, trying to hit its followers, and Buffy was able to dig her sword back into the beast before she hit the ground. A large gash appeared in the beast, and deep green blood came spurting out onto Buffy’s face, blinding her and rendering her unable to breathe. The substance hardened around her, and she couldn’t move at all.
Xander caught up with the Palchor and saw Buffy’s dehabilitated state. The site was visible, and the Palchor was heading straight for it. Oh, God. Buffy can’t let go. She’s going to get exploded with the demon.
Xander grabbed a couple of small knives he had in his belt and made his way up the snake the same way Buffy had. He made it up to where she was and sat on the sword that was still embedded in the demon. It started to move again, began to squeal. Xander knew he didn’t have very much time.
He used the small but sharp knives and tried to cut Buffy loose. He could see from here that she couldn’t breathe through the goop. He found the knives didn’t cut it very well. He tried desperately stabbing at the stuff, and eventually poked a hole through. Buffy could breathe again, but she still couldn’t move enough to get out.
He took a second to check his watch. 10:59. Right on target. He gradually sliced through the sack holding her until there was just a thread left. He looked into his lover’s eyes and said, “I love you.” He cut her loose and she hit the ground just short of the site. She wiggled out of the substance and watched with wide eyes as he was about to jump off.
The last thing he knew was her screaming his name.
