I agree with Angels_shadow in many respects. I disagree on more.
-Spike's rape attempt was the writer's fault. It was a foolish move and I believe season six could have been vastly improved without that in it. However, the entire show was the writer's fault. Riley was the writer's fault. The question becomes, what was the most foolish move the writers ever made: introducing Riley or having Spike attempt to sexually assault Buffy?
-True, some hate people with no reasoning behind it in reality, but I personally at least try to give the person some justification first. I don't just say, "Ugh, I don't like this person. I plan on disliking this person and nothing you can say or do can change my mind." Usually I search for some reason to dislike them, or a reason to say that they're not the greatest person in the world but they're all right. "Because he's annoying" still doesn't prove anything to me.
Of course, no one really needs to prove anything to me.
I'm sorry if I harassed anyone to the point of annoyance on that other Riley thread. I don't really remember a lot of the things I said; I tend to go on this site when I'm really annoyed.
That said, let's move on.
I'm a big Buffy/Angel fan. I loved that relationship. My favourite character is and always will be Spike. I just didn't like the relationship he and Buffy had in the 6th season; it was hollow and useless. With Riley, I didn't care about their relationship. He was Buffy's guy. Their relationship was very strong in the fourth season because Riley didn't see that Buffy didn't really love him yet. She cared for him, but she didn't love him. She wasn't ready for that yet because she still loved Angel so much. Riley realized that she'd been lying to him, or leading him on, and he fell apart. A lot of people blame him for leaving in the fifth season and giving her about three hours to choose between him or... not him. I think that the writers did that better than they get credit for; they wanted to get rid of Riley in one episode, and that they did. Riley finally understood that Buffy wasn't capable of loving him, so he gave her a warning, though small, and left, because that was never going to change.
Coming back with his wife was technically no different than Buffy going to Angel in his season one and saying, "La dee dah, I have a new man now, hee hee. Boy do you suck." Some of the things in that episode were unreasonable, but hey, doesn't that sort of go with the 'unreasonable' theme of season six in general?
Feel free to hate Riley. But I really do feel bad for Marc Blucas who takes all this crazy stuff from Riley-haters, when the character really wasn't his fault.
I swear I'm done now.
This is a roundrobin story. Would you like to contribute?
