Kathlin walked out of the spare room, down the hallway, and came out in the main room. There, Spike was waiting for her. She went over to him and wrapped her arms around him. At first, he was shocked, then he returned the hug.
"I’ve decided to stay, here with you.” she whispered into his ear. He was elated, but hid it as well as he could.
"What made you decide to stay?"
"Well, all my life, I’ve felt detached from most of my friends, like I knew I was different from them, but I didn’t know how. They always joked that I liked night better, and that was when I came alive. But it was true; I could sleep all day, and live my life at night. Now I realize that’s how I’m supposed to be.” She smiled up to him.
" I belong here.” she finished simply. Spike wrapped her tightly in his arms.
"I promise no harm will come to you, ever!” he vowed to her and himself. She giggled.
"Of course not, I’ll be immortal, silly!” He held her at arms’ length and studied her critically.
"What do you mean?” he asked.
"Well, I stole a look into one of Giles’ books and it held information on the half vampires. And if I remember it correctly, a half-vampire becomes immortal when they turn 16, which is tonight.” Kathlin smiled mischievously at him and tilted her head as she watched him absorbing this information. Suddenly, a severe pain ripped through her, causing her to double over. She gasped and Spike lifted her gently.
"What is it?” he asked anxiously.
"Just the change-over.” she whispered. But soon, the pain was too much for her to handle. Kathlin blacked out and fell to the floor, unconscious.
