As they walked, Angel was strangely quiet. Kathlin stopped, causing everyone to stop and shaking Angel out of his thoughts into the real world.
" Angel, I really don’t know who that guy was, but I agree, he did seem familiar.” Kathlin said softly. Angel spun around and looked at her, unsure what to say. He stammered, “How’d you know that?” She smiled and tapped her head.
"If I concentrate, I can read people’s minds for a certain distance. I promise I won’t do it unless necessary, but sometimes it’s fun.” They continued walking for a few more blocks until they came to Willow’s house.
"Xander’s staying at my house because my parents and his are out at some convention in Washington for the week. Are you two going to be ok?” Kathlin nodded.
"We’ll be fine.” They waved and promised to meet up tomorrow morning.
"Those two make a cute couple.” smiled Angel as they continued down the street. They kept on walking, telling jokes and laughing. When they were around two blocks from Buffy’s house, Kathlin suddenly stopped. Angel turned around.
"What’s wrong?” Her eyes went really wide “Duck.” she yelled as she ran towards him, pushing him down. As he hit the ground, Angel heard a stake whistle above him, exactly where he’d been standing. They stood up.
"Cowards, can’t you even try and fight?!”, Kathlin yelled, “come out and play.” At least 10 vampires came out of the trees towards them. Angel whispered into her ear, “Are you sure we can fight all of them?"
" Don’t worry. I’ve got a plan.” she replied. They took their fighting positions, but to their surprise, the vampires formed a circle around them.
"This isn’t part of my plan.” Kathlin whispered nervously. Suddenly an opening formed in the circle and they saw Spike walk from the shadows into the light towards them. His bleached blond hair glowed under the streetlight and his blue eyes lit up as they saw Kathlin.
"That isn’t either!” Kathlin was getting really nervous now. This couldn’t end well.
"Bring the girl here.” Spike commanded. Two vamps stepped forward to entice her to walk.
"I can walk on my own.” she said, pretending to sulk. Unexpectedly, she turned and doubled the first one over with a swift kick to the stomach that should’ve broken bones. He fell, moaning, as the second came towards her, causing her to back up. She didn’t realize that she was being trapped until she saw another vamp step up behind her. The one in front of her aimed to knock her out and when he moved his fist forward, she ducked and he knocked out the vamp behind her.
"Thanks!” she teased. He growled and advanced on her. Kathlin looked quickly over his shoulder to where Angel was being surrounded by the rest of the vampires. Suddenly, Spike stepped up beside her. She shied sideways to get away, but he walked up to the advancing vamp and kicked it in the side.
"I told you, she’s not to be hurt.” he growled as he kicked the vamp again. Then he pulled out a stake and staked it, stepping back to avoid the dust. Before she could move further away, he grabbed her arm and pulled her towards him.
"Angel!” she screamed, but before he could do anything, Spike had her firmly and didn’t seem to want to let her go. He looked to the vamps holding Angel and spoke to them, “Just don’t kill him. I want the Slayer to know what happened.” With that, he turned away, trying to drag Kathlin, but she wouldn’t go.
"You’re a monster!” she spat out angrily. Spike sighed in exasperation. He chopped her cleanly on the back of the neck and caught her when she lapsed into unconsciousness. Cradling Kathlin gently in his arms as Angel had done before, he turned and walked away, leaving the vampires to complete their job.
