Giles was reading one of his newest books when Angel and Buffy burst in, carrying Kathlin.
"What happened?” he asked as her gently took her from Angel and laid her on the couch in his office. Coming out, he motioned to Buffy and Angel to sit down at the table with all the books. Buffy started first.
"We were walking home after Kathlin told you off,” at this Giles became slightly red, “and we were ambushed by two vamps. I took out one, but the second grabbed Kathlin. This is where it gets really weird. He was about to bite her, when something stopped him. I think it was her necklace Anyway, he turns her around, looks at her for a minute, bows and leaves. Somehow, he knew something about her that we don’t, but what?” Giles grabbed the book he was previously looking through and opened it to the page that had caught his attention.
"Is this her necklace?” he asked, showing them an old picture of a woman wearing a beautiful blue stone necklace exactly like Kathlin’s.
"Yes, but who’s wearing it?” Buffy questioned. Angel smiled.
"I can answer that. That’s a French girl named Dominique. She was killed by vampires, but it was rumored that she was half vampire. She could endure sunlight and holy objects, but had all the strength and speed of vampires. She could drink blood, but also eat regular food. Also, she had the same healing powers that you have, Buffy. She had a daughter, but no one knew what happened to her when her mother died. The necklace became the symbol of the Chosen One, the half vampires. It protects the wearer from any harm and vampires recognize it.” Buffy looked interested.
"Why are vampires so wary of it?” Angel thought for a moment, then said “I’m not sure. I think there was a vampire in love with Dominique, and when she was killed, he had no mercy on any in that area. The necklace is given to the next Chosen One by their vampire-guardian, when the last one has died. These guardians watch over the Chosen One until their 16th birthday, which is when they become full vampires "
"So, if this is related to Kathlin, who is her guardian?” Buffy asked.
"It’s tricky. Even she might not know. They’re good about hiding. But one way to find a Chosen One is to watch the vampire activity. Just like the HellMouth here, the necklace attracts them because of its power.” Angel glanced over to where the exhausted girl lay, still sleeping.
"So what can we do to protect her from this?” Buffy asked.
Angel shook his head.
"There should be nothing to worry about now. That vampire will tell others, and if her guardian finds out, he will make sure they stay away and no harm comes to her. But the most important thing is that she stays with you at all times during the night, unless you two are at home."
"Why?” came a voice that startled all of them. Kathlin walked out of the office, looking rumpled and confused.
"Bad idea to talk about someone when they are within hearing range. So why must I stay near Buffy?"
"So you aren’t attacked like you were tonight.” Giles looked straight at her. she went and sat down on the extra chair, at the table.
"Kathlin, do you know where you got that necklace?"
"I know I’ve had it all my life. Sometimes, I remember when I was little, I saw a tall blond man standing over me and fastening the necklace on my neck, with a brown-haired man standing nearby. I didn’t know who either of them were and my mom never told me. Also, Buffy, why were you so prepared when we were attacked? Does it happen a lot around here?” Buffy looked at Giles.
"Can I tell her the truth?"
"Please do!” said Kathlin. So Buffy told her about being the Slayer, and how she hunted vampires at night. She also warned her about Spike and Drusilla, the resident vampire couple. After the whole explanation, Kathlin smiled.
"So Xander and Willow know about your…nighttime hobby?” Buffy nodded.
"And Giles studies from these boring old books for prophecies relating to you? (Just joking, Giles!) Interesting."
"Also Kathlin, Buffy’s mom cannot know about this. She could be in too much danger if she knew.” Kathlin nodded and looked up to the wall clock.
"Buffy, what time does your mom get home from work?"
"Around 10pm. Why?” Now Buffy looked confused.
"Because I think she’s expecting us to be home and it’s 9:45pm.” Kathlin started to grab her bags.
"So we should get going, as in NOW!” Buffy looked at the clock and jumped into action.
"Bye Giles.” Angel looked at Giles, who nodded, and Angel disappeared after the two girls, just in case.
